1.60 Naval Phase Problem Part II

Post by GenMetaxas »

After no success playing 1.60 on my main computer (Dell XPS Quad, 32bit) I convinced the wife to install the game on her lap top (Dell studioXPS 16, 64bit)
to my shock I had the same problem.

1.50 plays fine
1.60 plays fine grafix/sounds work great but the game freezes during naval battles

Question?

1) is anybody running this game with 1.60 successfully with a Dell XPS system?

2) is anybody running the game on a system with multiple proccessors?

3) both systems use McAfee anti virus, could that be the problem?

4) I got 1.60 to work on my old lap top but the game is too sluggish to enjoy, mouse gitters when you move accross the screen even at the lowest resolutions. Old laptop is Dell single cpu, low amount of RAM and anti virus is Norton. So I ruled out a bad download of the game.

5) I have had my XPS PC for a year and this is the first time I've had a problem with a game. (Lucky I guess/but not so with this game)

The patch looks great would love to avoid returning to 1.50.[&:]

I'm not much of a techie so I would appreciate any suggestions that may resolve the problem.

Try to disable McAfee antivirus when playing ToW, but it's just a suggestion - sometimes antivirus software causes problems with games.

I finally got it to play by selecting a windowed grafix selection in the preferences.

Got as far as 13 turns and then it crashed. I reloaded the autosave and now I am on turn 18.

Very wierd!

But atleast I am playing the game.

Would love to hear why that is?

When/If it crashes again please post the ConsoleOut.Txt file here, and zip the Autosave folder just in case it can help diagnose a common problem. There is no "acceptable" reason for the crash on turn 13, so lets try and find what it was! I am delighted you are playing, and you will have a ball.

I downloaded and tried your game. I declared war on the Netherlands, and waged war there two turns without issue. You might reload it yourself and see if it works this time. It may not but it worked well for me. Maybe a developer can tell from ConsoleOut.Txt where it failed for you.

These problems which are more difficult to reproduce are the real bears to debug. Sorry I can't be of more help, but do try the reload.

Thanks CP,

The funny thing is that as long as I play in windowed mode I can reload them and play for about
10 turns before it crashes during or after the Navy Phase. (ie. the same game crashed in Nov 39 and I reloaded and crashed again in Jan 40 I reloaded and I'm in May now)

If I play in non windowed mode it crashes every turn on both my Dell XPS PC and on the Dell XPS laptop.

Its bizare the facts so far that Ive gathered are:

1) problem only with version 1.60, vanila and 1.50 did not have a single crash, so it's something that changed in 1.60.

2) 1.60 works on an old dell lap top so it has something to do with the XPS system or the fact that both systems have multiple cpus.

3) 1.60 Windowed mode works for a longer time than non windowed

4) Potentially there is a memory leak.

5) When I play non windowed mode and it crashes I can't alt/tab I have to do ctrl/alt/del and end the app before I get control of the system.

6) when I play in windowed mode, I still can switch between aps and I don't see any major use of memory and cpu is at 0%

Atleast I'm playing.

Cheers

I enjoyed the play against the Netherlands. I almost got them in two weeks. Nice of them to defend Amsterdam with an air unit!

Glad you are playing.
