SS attack combat report not matching combat animations

Post by rattovolante »

I had this happen 2 times in the last 2 turns of my PBeM (a third case might be related, although a minefield was involved, not torpedoes). It might be a concern for players who have combat animations turned off.

Combat animations show a submarine attack, with one ship torpedoed. If no ships in the TF have ASW rating, combat animation ends, otherwise any ASW capable ships in the TF retaliate with depth charges.

Combat report instead shows an ASW attack - no trace of the submarine attack, the torpedoed ship, or the fact that the submarine fired torpedoes. If no ASW retaliation was shown in the combat animation, the ASW combat report is "empty" - no ships are listed as taking part in the ASW attack.

Examples:

1- Combat animation showed I-21 torpedoing CA New Orleans, then DMS Wasmuth (which was in New Orleans' TF) trying an ASW attack. Combat report:
ASW attack near Hilo at 189,110

Japanese Ships
SS I-21

Allied Ships
DMS Wasmuth

I-21 diving deep ....
DMS Wasmuth fails to find sub, continues to search...
DMS Wasmuth fails to find sub, continues to search...
DMS Wasmuth fails to find sub, continues to search...
DMS Wasmuth fails to find sub, continues to search...
DMS Wasmuth fails to find sub, continues to search...
Escort abandons search for sub
From what I can tell from my side of the FoW, I-21 expended torpedoes this turn. CA New Orleans is reported sunk, but by an airstrike that happened later in the same turn.

2- Combat animation showed SS KXI torpedoing DD Usugumo. DD Usugumo was in a surface combat TF with 3 other DDs, none of them had ASW ratings, so no ASW attack resulted.
Combat report was:
ASW attack near Singora at 51,72

Allied Ships
SS KXI

KXI bottoming out ....
Sub escapes detection
Note "ghost" ASW attack by no ship.
I'm the japanese player, so I can confirm that DD Usugumo was reported sunk by a dutch submarine torpedo in the same day and location of the "empty" ASW attack.

PS: if you need saves, please specify which one I should send you... the one with the Allied player orders (i.e., the one immediately before turn exectution)? or the .001?
