RE: Luganville

Post by bigred »

Luganville has become the focus of both sides. Note in the attached screenprint 3 areas of operations. At PM the japs sporadically bomb the base to keep the Allies honest. USN lost one AK within the past week trying to ship into PM. Until the p38 comes on line allies will continue to have any power in this sector.

Below Cairns the lost 17th Corp continues to take a daily dose of vitamin Iron as 80+ p39s get target practice on a daily basis.

At Luganville the allies are working on a minefield just to the south as the KB lurks 7 hexes to the north. On the previous turn 2 USN DDs were sunk by IJN KB air. What a dangerous game we play. Allied advantage is short distance of damaged ship to port and easy fly distance to Luganville. Allied subs never were attrited properly earlier in the game. This turn one took a shot at the Kaga. IJN advantage is the ring of islands around luganville cause a major mineclearing operation to occur and 3 allied cariers are sunk w/ 2 accounted for in the AO..

In a thunderstorm the KB delivers a lite blow to the allied DD fleet as Ikesan pounds Luganville w/ shore bombardment. Probably sank about 3 DD's.

RE: Marines are ashore

Post by bigred »

1st Marine division has landed at Luganville supported by a paradrop on the first day. The IJN Surface response team is slow to do anything after the losses at Townsville. The fort was reduced from a 5 to a 4. With the 35th brigade artillery the IJA had hoped to push the allies into the sea, just like Efate(hehehe). Not to be.

RE: fort level 2

Post by bigred »

Luganville is at fort level 2 three days after the landing. The KB is 7 hexes north and the allied CV TF has withdrawn south of efate. Minor night action resulted in the sinking of the APD Manley.

RE: 35th Brigade

Post by bigred »

When I studied the TOE of the IJA 35th Brigade I was impressed by the siege artillery and the AT guns. I figured the design of the unit was for fort reduction. I also felt the arty units could really do some damage to allied units if the guns could survive the Air and sea bombardments. On the last allied ground attack at Luganville the allies could not raise a 1-1 attack. The allied fleet has not returned to bombard the hex and I wonder if the minefield damage made the situation dificult for IKESAN. In addition A6M2s have been freely able to ground strafe the allied units. I am not sure Ike will be able to push IJA out unless he commits the 2nd Marine Division in November. And the Ija gets two fresh divisons soon also.

Just curious, what does the "FR" stand for in the IJA 39th FR Construction Bn.

The IJ forces have conceded a 2-1 victory to Ike99. Ike was the most experienced allied commander I have played and he has tought me some lessons. I will let Ike post some statistics.
