Ah, just thinking I may not have been clear - is it possible to move down from 1804 to 1800 with a game in progress?

I haven't tried it, but you're welcome to. I'd still do it the way I suggested, fresh install to separate folder, then copy the save over and see what happens. If this is PBEM game, Japanese player should do first.

I doubt this will work. IIRC there was a save file format change with 1083. I doubt pre-1083 versions will be able to read 1083 and later save files.
