Air
A fair bit of action, most in China. Importantly Oscars sweep Rangoon and loose one of their number. My P-40E sweeps in the PI net nothing, but it is all good experience!

My anti shipping strike supporting Manado achieve little but use up Japanese AA ammunition... an important consideration!

Other Important Actions
A Japanese 4 CA TF hits Rabaul and hangs around, with simultaneous attacks at Shortlands and Tulagi it looks like the SWPAC is about to get some focus.

In China we are being forced back, you can't stop the Japanese, but you can annoy the hell out of them

Plans now will be to evacuate Rabaul, and prepare PM for siege. Rangoon could be under threat soon.


Anaylsis
Overall the slow and methodical approach largely continues

Burma - As expected.
Malaya - still slow.
DEI - Manado is a good choice, and a safe one. Except to see lots here soon. We have 2-3 subs in the area, and will vector some more in. Have 3 SCTF in area as well, mini KB probably in support with KB in SWPAC, so risk is acceptable and the invasion is lightly supported (only a CL). Will see what Tony thinks.
SWPAC - heating up quick, as Tulagi has some risk this early I expect Nik is in command here (as he is more of a risk taker than Joe)... but KB probably in the area in support, so the USN CV's won't sortie yet... IF we show the CV's though they will have to keep SOME CV in the area to protect Tulagi.
Pacific - No change.
China - As expected.

30-31 Dec

Well the game just got far more interesting!

In a bold move Nik sent KB deep and took out a CV TF (Saratoga) heading to Brisbane and a Convoy carring 2 Baseforces, CD guns and an AE. The loss of the convoy is the worse outcome as it will leave northern Australia vulnerable as while we will have aircraft we won't have the airsupport to fly them effecticely.

This has now led to a reassessment of the Pacific and the Australia Defence.

Considerations
Joe and Nik may be heading for the Oz homeland... little do they know that as a Victorian I'm aware that everything north of the Murray River isn't worth fighting for....

Nik is in charge in the Pacific. This is the most dangerous course of action for us as Nik is less predictable and more likley to take risks.

Without air support Australia is vulnerable... however I always take the Russian approach to war on the homeland, they can have it, won't do them much good in the long run!


New Course of Action
Abandon the Pacific further. New Zealand will form the base of preperation, not Fiji. Continue to move forces to Pearl Harbour as the main base.

Reinforcements to Australia to go the long way via New Zealand.

With KB in the Pacific move the US CV's into the indian ocean.

Continue to defend, but not reinforce Port Moresby.

Move Australian combat forces further south to Brisbane, rather than north to Townsville.

Tha Japanes can have whatever they want at the moment, we will prepare for offensive ops where KB isn't being the Indian Ocean and North Pacific.

Rest of Turn

Our SCTF didn't find anything, but a Japanes SCTF that went into Kendari had a CA and a DD hit mines, but they sant two small tankers in the process). We may get them as our ships retire...

At Cagayan despite the overwheliming odds and Naval gunfire the brave defenders hold for a turn... but then fall. The mini KB is operating here as well.

Our subs hit and almost certainly sink another Japanese Tanker.

Lots of air action, we are pretty happy with the outcomes overall, attriting enemy aircraft and not loosing much. Our bombers out of Singapore are really working over the advancing Japanese columns.

At Darwin the two reinforcing Brit brigades have commenced unloading. Darwin should now be secure.

Port Moresby has over 20,000 in supply, and the bombers operating from it already are chewing up Lae. But with KB around it will only be a matter of time.

The KB retires and doesn't hit any more ships near Brisbane. Most of the DD's and the AE gets away!
Our air does really well in Malaya claiming around 14 Sallies while roughing up the advancing Japanese armour, kill a few tanks but disabling stacks.
Our air interdiction of Lae continues without opposition.
PM has almost 30k in supplies

A TF with the II US Fighter command bound for PM, that strayed way of course two turns ago runs into a sub when I directed it into a "safe" area, despite the escort the AP goes down with the entire HQ... the HQ will return in 30 days, but another precious AP is lost... and no airsupport to Australia again...

Malaya

At Kuala Lumpur we have a strong outpost (240 AV) to force the Japanese to deploy, and march from Taiping. It has lvl 3 forts and 26% to 4.

At Singapore we have Lvl 3.5 forts and about 500AV.

The aim is to force the deployment, then fall back on Malacca. Will sacrifice some units here to help destroy the resources. A force is trying to get before the Japanese and force them to turn around to deal with it... delay delay delay...

Around Timor we are preparing, pulling forces back to create dialemas, and force the Japanese to invade in force, and therefore delay. With a Brit diuv, and Aussie forces moving in the base is now secure, and will soon be at Lvl 5 afld.

03-04 Jan 1942
Subs
Numerous Japanese attacks near PM and Koepang, but the captains need new glasses and so get no hits.

Air
We again do well in the air over Malaya shooting down more Sallies, hitting the Imperial guard hard without opposition and generally having a good time... unless you are a Buffalo pilot, we lost a few of those to Oscar sweeps.

Elsewhere while we sortie on Lae the KB comes in and trashes Port Moresby. Fortunately the two cargo convoys had unloaded and got away. Looks like the seige is really about to happen now. We have 30k in supply, and are flying in more militia troops.

In the PI our P-40 units savage the ground forces without opposition. Their experiance is climbing... not that it helps that much.

We sortie against shipping, but don't hit anything, near Miri.

Ground
In China the Allied forces at Sinyang, after days of heavy bombardment (no wonder the Japanese need more resources!) throw out the Chinese forces in a 5-1 attack.

Also in China Kaoping falls.

In Malaya the Raiding Regt lands on Malacca and takes the base, even though it is defended by the Argylls Bn... I check the turn and find that it had been left in Strategic mode. We have the two Aussie bdes not far away so will rush them there and use our air on the raiders... otherwise our entire defence is compromised. The other benefit is it gives us a chance to destroy more resources! I expect there to be some bllody air battles here that will culminate our airforce...

Analysis
Our defence of Malaya is temporaily unhinged... the question is do the Japanese have extra forces they can send their via air. We will CAP the base more (they lost a number of sallies last turn) and turn the airforce on them while marching forward the Aussies. It will be another couple of turns before they can close on Kuala Lumpur ... but it will be a race! We are about to loose a lot of planes, but we are flying from shorter range and so they should suffer a bit more. I doubt we will have much airforce left after this and so evacuations will commence.

Port Moresby is probably closed down. It is in a reasonable state of defence, but with KB there we can't do much, and it will fall. I'm happy with what we have done so far... basically you can't stop the Japanese anywhere this early so just need to give up on anything they want... but you can cause delay.


Friendly Moves
CV's are heading to the IO. Hopefully we can savage Mini KB at some point. A few convoys are at sea from the West Coast and have been routed to southgern Australia and NZ.

Half a USA regt is at Suva and it has around 100AV. This should stop any raid, but it will be months before we can generate the force required to hold it. Pago Pago is recieving a few extra troops, again enough to defeat a raid, but not a full on invasion. It is an important, but not essential, link in our air reinforcement chain.

We are moving in the NORPAC while we know where the Jap CV's are.

Phillipines
Our P-40's again hit the enemy at Lingayen, causing light damage. Experiance continues to grow but the enemy is massing (around 10-12 units now) and ships are unloading at Aparrii. Manila is building nicely and soon it will be time to withdraw.

The Japanese continue to clean up the southern Phillipines.


Borneo
Miri has stacks of shipping so the air launced several strikes, but Zero's protect the shipping and we loose planes to no effect.

Tarakan now has several Brit BF and forces evacuated from the Phillipines, these are being flown back to the rear.


DEI
No real change, our Hudsons continue to gain experiance from bombing the trapped SNLF at Sorong (we sank all their shipping sevral days ago).


SWPAC
Surprisingly not follow-on air attacks against PM. Our planes don't fly due to damage, but we will be able to evacuate more. Continue to fly in troops, upton an AV of about 170.

A sub attacks but misses a large number of stupport ships moving into Truk.

Pacific
No action.

China
The Japanese continue to clean up.


Analysis
Overall a good turn for us. Kuala Lumpur holding was nice and our massed air did good over malacca.

I expect KB to come back in a few turns in the SWPAC escorting the PM invasion forces. I doubt we can delay much longer here, but I feel the mainland is secure enough.

Fleets are conentrating the the DEI at Koepang, and a US CV is near Perth , with a second to follow soon. With Darwin secure and stacks of fuel and supply we have a solid foundation to work with in this area... unles KB comes a knocking!

Well we got the turn and did the moves.

The important bit at the moment is Malaya, after a lot of discussion we have decided to try to get Malaca back. We have plenty of supply at Kuala Lumpur, and should hold a couple of turns. The eneemy has railed forces down the flank, we hope to catch them with air this turn and cause lots of casualties.

There are 3 units there now, but I suspect they are just fragments... a 4th is on the way.

We are trying to cut off the cebntral axis by moving forces behind them.

Wosr case is we loos a couple of hundred AV, but this is unlikley to cause much more delay anyway.

Singapore should make lvl 4 forts soon and has plenty of supply.

The nexty turn will be interesting...

In Burma we hit the enemy advance guard hard again. That poor battalion will be in a bad way at the moment. All good experiance! Now if Chrchill would just send us a few more sqadrons and newer aircraft we could really do good!

We are likley to loose Kuala Lumpur next turn as they have over 1400 AV vs our 200 there now. Not sure what is at Malacca yet, but at least an Inf regt and the raiders. This certainly was a nice move, didn't realise the next turn they would be able to rail in like that

A bit of action, we loose an AM but that is about it.


Analysis
We are in a pause before the next lot of Japanese operations. Port Moresby hasn't been attacked again and should be capable of conducting air ops this turn. KB has probably retired to Truk, the question is will it come back sth or go elsewhere...

The loss of around 30 Sallies will really hurt. In particular this will limit their ability to bomb Singapore, and in Burma. They are obviously saving their Netties... but may need to commit them soon (they are using some in the Phillipines).

We have no indications on where they are going next.

If it wasn't for the Malacca attack I'd have considered that we had done real good in Malaya... but we are now only doing just ok...

They have 12 units oustide of Clark, but Clark has 500AV and 3 forts... they advance from the south as well... looks like a few more days before we need to pull back to Manila... they are waiting for more force and probably trying to bluff us into falling back.

Subs
The subs are again active, but largely ineffective (we hit 1 xAK near Davao). One of ours hits a mine while searching for shipping near Hakodate... it should get home OK.

Burma
No change. Continue to hit forces building outside Pegu. We have begun the evacuation of Rangoon, the civilian population is going mad, rioting in the streets and digging up the airfield to grow vegetables.

Malaya
Pretty ugly for both sides

We loose Kuala Lumpur and all 9 units are destroyed in place.

Lots of air to air combat, overall we do good, but our fighter force is being whittled away. They loos more Sally and Lily's but their fighter force is beginning to be more effective. We are trying to be cunning and hit where they have fewer fighters, concentrating on the ground troops in order to disrupt and slow the advance. Our remaining ground units are pulling back just in front of the advancing Japanese. Singapore is around 80% to lvl 4 forts.

Philippines
the last defenders on Mindanao fall. On Luzon the Japanese are holding off waiting for reinforcements. the question now is timing for us, when do they have the force (or are they bluffing and in the process of deploying elsewhere), and when do we fall back on Manila. Manila has about 700Av, to the south is about 400, and Clark and nth of Manila about 500 each. Forts are at or near 3, with manila heading to 4. I'm evacuating key elements by air, and the occasional ship.



DEI

No real change Moving troops via air, striping fuel and supply in advance and consolidating.

Our bombers at Ambon continue to gain experience hitting ground troops at Sorong.

Ok this is a big, important, interesting and lucky turn!

First as a Cavalry officer Tony is barely literate, and therefore tends not to post here... although he does read it to see what I'm thinking/doing. Last turn we noticed at least part of KB in the DEI. At the time Tony had large surface forces (Brit, Dutch and one or two US ships) at Sorebaya. I had two large SCTF at Darwin. I almost sent mine to join his... but instead decided to play safe and move to Broome. Tony, using his 6th sense (as I've noted before he is a lucky bastard, mainly cause he has good instincts and listens to them), thinks (but doesn't tell me!) that the KB may try a raid on Sorebaya...

Near Sinkawang we also saw some surface forces moving, again Tony listens to his instincts and puts the entire allied airforce in Singapore and Batavia on Naval strike...

I like having Tony on my team Actually team games are good when you can work together and complement each other.

Enemy Intentions
The enemy intends landing at Palembang with strong ground troops lifted from the nth coast of Borneo (Miri and maybe Kuching) with forces bought direct from within the Empire. This is a strong bold move. As a consequence there are at least 3 large AP's currently unloading at Palembang, however the follow-on forces, and surface combat covering forces have suffered disruption from air attacks

In support of that KB has attempted to destroy the known Allied fleet that was based at Sorebaya. This failed when the fleet moved just in time.

Likely Enemy Future moves
He has two options, continue with his operation to take Palembang, or retire.

He is likely to continue with his operation because he has forces at Palembang and he has KB in supporting range. This is our assessed most likely and most dangerous for us, so the course of action we will plan against.

The alternative is he will retire to nth coast of Borneo, and the KB back to the Philippines. We assess this to be unlikely.


We expect KB to rush from its location 6-7 hexes east of Sorebaya to a location vicinity Batavia to try and intercept our fleet from the air, cover the landings with LRCAP. We expect him to do this along the "inland sea"" area, rather than via the Indian Ocean (but we are preparing for both. Likely to also launch air attack on Batavia.

We expect the bulk of the landing forces, with the remaining (or another undetected) covering force to move to Palembang to support and cover the landings.

We expect enemy air in Malaya (who was remarkably quiet last turn) to launch a massed raid on Singapore (which JUST received LVL4 forts!) in an effort to disrupt and destroy our airforce, if not in day one at least day two and beyond.


Friendly Plan
We will "go for it"!

The surface combat fleets vicinity of Batavia (which should be fully fuelled and armed) will drive on Palembang in an effort to sink the invasion fleets. This force is Brit and Dutch CL's and a variety of DD's. While over matched by the Japanese CA's the Japanese fleet has suffered some damage, and largely appears to be out of secondary armament... so while a 50/50 call it is probably the best we can hope for.

On the air side if it carries things that "go bang" it will be launched in an effort to hit the shipping. Singapore and Batavia will not be defended.

The surface fleet will attempt to flee up the straits of Malacca afterwards, heading back is certain death, heading north we may get lucky (depending on the location of the enemy Netties, which were largely based out of Saigon...).


While we are likely to loose most of the fleet this is the best chance we will get. We still have a strong CA based fleet in reserve so the DEI is not completely undefended... In fact that may move back to Darwin now in anticipation of enemy invasions in the east DEI, and then back to Brisbane via the north.


Elsewhere PM is back up and running, and we will move more forces there while KB is elsewhere. 5000 supply should be mostly unloaded by now, bringing the base up to about 30,000 and an AV of about 180.

The big unknown is Mini KB. It is either in the South China Sea (unlikely) or in the vicinity of Truk/Rabaul.
