Analysis 17-18 Jan

A resounding success! We largely destroy the Japanese invasion forces and sink some importanat ships. The sunk list is at least the following, with probably many more.

In the DEI KB remains to protect the invasions of Kendari/Ambon and probably Koepang. As usual when you think of 2 enemy courses of action they choose a third. The allied fleets have returned to Darwin, so I am in a position to interfere with the landing at Ambon... but will have to flee to the Australian East coast afterwards. They should have the intel now that Koepang has the two Indian Brigades.


In the SWPAC PM is open for business, and has been resupplied. Lots of aircraft are arriving in theatre.

Well we have the turn.

We lost 2 CL and 2 DD, have a CL badly damaged and 3 DD damaged, one heavy but should survive.

After the awesome Dutch/UK victory (and the loss of USS Marblehead) the US commander at Darwin is going to attempt to ambush the forces moving to Ambon (which includes at least one CA).

Our loss is acceptable for the destruction of these forces! We loose two DD's to Betty during the day, and sink most of the rest of the enemy TF from the air as well.

We counterattack the force landed at Palembang getting 3:1 odds, but loose more troops than we destroy.


Phillipines
Luzon FINALLY heats up. First comes the air where in a series of combats we loose 3-5 P-40 and claim a Zero, 4 Nate, 5 Lily.

On the ground they attack at Cabanatuan at 1:2 oddds (Fort 3) taking 1600 casualties to our 600.

At Clark they drop the forts to 2 but still have 1:3 odds and take 2300 casualties to 700.

Both lots of ground forces are conducting a fightering withdrawal on Manila

Analysis

We will probably loose all the ships from the US TF that hit Ambon, but it was worth it!

Between that and hitting the 2 CA off Singapore the Japanese force has been heavily attrited for moderate loss.

I was lazy at Darwin, should have moved the ships out, Tony I'm sorry

darwin has no fighter defences (they are still forming at Alice Springs) but we do have some spare strike aircraft...


Joe and Nik tried to cover their forces by hitting the potential staging bases... and almost succeed. In the long run they lost two invasion TF though because while they were striking they weren't covering and we managed to slip forces in.

Their simultaneous ops also spread their forces too thin.

An expensive lesson for the Empire...

Thanks Fishbed, yes we are a bit surprised, we think aliens have abducted the real Joe and Nik!

OTOH this is part of the overall plan, not really fight for anything, but hit back when we can, the threat of that (accompanied by succesful prosecution) will make them go back to being cautious...

But we are basically spent in the DEI for the moment.

Current plans are:

Open a new front in the NORPAC suported by a CV.

Move the remaining 2 CV sth of Java and move aircraft to support the defence of Java.

Continue to build up in New Zealand, then move forward in force to Fiji before looking for opportunities late Aug in SOPAC.

Defend forward in the Phillipines (1 hex out from Manila) as the enemy has split their forces, and looks like they don't have enough to penetrate anywhere.


We know where KB and Mini KB are (East DEI) but we have the following priority information requierments:

Where are the Japanese airbourne units (probably Burma...).

Where are all the SNLF as the 4th Div (broken into 3, with 1/3rd sunk, are in the east DEI) probably massing at Truk for ops in SWPAC (PM)/SOPAC... but they need CV spt.

Where is the rest of the Japanese air forces (about half noted in Phillipines/Malaya).



All the above leads me to believe Joe and Nik where planning something "big" ... but now we have probably forced a delay or a complete replan...


We are still trying to maintain a balanced posture, with fleet units in the Indian Ocean, East Coast of Australia, Pearl Harbour and NORPAC capable of limited offensive action.

Fuel in Australia is our limitation, in particular to support the IO forces.

21-22 Jan 1942

Burma
No change. The Japanese advance guard is moving forward on the remnants of our rear guard. About 12k in supply is unloading the last amounts. We will then load all the fuel we can before the last convoy leaves in a few days. Defence preparations are occurring in a number of locations well inland ahead of an anticipated Japanese thrust.

Malaya
heavy air attacks on Singapore occur, but the damage is being repaired as fast as its being created... so far. We are loosing a lot of aircraft on the ground though. The AV is around 700 with lvl 4 forts. The Japanese are about to take the last base on the mainland that is allied.

Sumatra
The Japanese fast transport in elements of the raiding regiment. The CL Kuma takes two hits from the defenders guns. During the day a few allied aircraft attack the beachhead, and planes attack the retiring FT TF to no effect. On the 21st The allies bombard and the Japanese shock attack. In both cases the Japanese come off the worse for wear, and only achieve 1:1 against forts of 2. The forts are dropped to one though. On the 22nd though they only achieve 1:4, it looks like even with the additional troops Palembang will hold, and the Japanese are exhausted!

A24's operating from PM hit Lae and a TF going into Buna (no hits but i think the TF turned back as no additional forces have appeared there). We own this area at the moment.

Things are not looking good for Nanning. The whole north central front is about to collapse. We just can't halt them I'm glad Tony is playing this, he basically did the same thing to me in our game!

Analysis
Very happy with what we are achieving at the moment. We have really stolen the moment from Nik and Joe, and though I hesitate to say it I think we have won the initiative for the moment.

Key actions in the coming turn.

Support the ground troops at Lautum with B-17 strikes on the enemy. Fighters have now arrived in Darwin.

In the SWPC I've moved a unit of Marine Dautless's to PM to go with the Marine Wildcat unit and 2 A-24 units. We will continue to hit Lae and up the ante of force they will need to commit to this area. The 8th Marines should be at Townsville in about 2-3 days. they will then be flow in to help the defence as well. With 30k in supply PM will require a multi divisional attack to take it within 2-3 weeks, with KB in support.

In the Phillipines now we have stopped the advance cold I will attack. I will move units (15--200AV) to Iba from Clark, then attack Lingayen. I'm moving another 300 AV from Manila to Clark. We have a chance of surrounding the Clark forces then... See the image below. Supplies are now about 30k. I've tried to get in extra but so far all have been sunk...

Replanning t=in the Phillipines.

After discussing with Tony I have decided to shock attack in 2 turns at Clark to force the Japanes to retreat, rather than try to surround them. Thefore the following orders have been cut

Move 4th Marines from Cabanatuan to Clark (about 90AV but 60 experiance).
Move 300 AV from Manila to Clark.
Cease movement of forces out of Clark to Iba (150 AV).

This should give us about 11-1200 AV vs at most 600 AV on the Japanese side. I will bombard with 155mm guns for two days then with the shock attack we should get 3:1 and force them to retreat... thats the plan anyway!

Ahem...speaking as a northerner (north of the Murray)...don't you think that in view of your sterling efforts to date, that you might reconsider your attitude towards saving us northerners.  After all now that we seem likely to be able to export our Hunter Valley chardonays (plus Bega cheese, Sydney rock oysters) without having to comply with any directives issued from Tokyo, we might just decide to export our valuable products to more deserving markets.  Yes I think it might be time for a nice grovelling exercise - we might even allow David Hussey to replace the injured Michael Clarke, if we are sufficiently mollified.

Hmm interesting and very bloody AAR. Might I ask where did you get those B-17D's at Singapore from? AFAIK all B-17's in the philippines are restricted?
