Evac by amphib TF - possible problem

Post by Local Yokel »

Here are the save files for the possible problem with evacuation by amphibious TF about which I posted on the AE Naval and OOB Issues thread.

PBEM Guadalcanal scenario, ver 1.0.1.1084e. The files have a .zip suffix to make the uploadable, but are not compressed. Suffix just needs removal.

Relevant TF is TF 27. First file, wpae006.pws, is the state of the game immediately before hitting end turn for 15 Aug 42. Second file, wpae007.pws (in next post), is state of game immediately after combat resolution.

Is it relevant that TF expended op. points at base from which unit was to be picked up? (Stupid mistake on my part not to inhibit refuelling). Is the op mode of the unit to be picked up relevant? Couldn't see anything to say so in the manual.

Whatever the reason, TF27 still had its pickup orders at the end of the 15 Aug turn, but headed back to home base without picking up any troops.

Do you have an earlier save? Would like to see the ones just before and just after the TF was ordered to pick up the unit.

The best I can do is provide saves regenerated by re-running the save files as received from my opponent. Spurious .zip suffix as before.

Wpae009.pws (attached here) is the immediate post-combat situation on 13 Aug. By this time I had not formed the TF to carry out the evacuation. I'm afraid I don't have a save showing the state of the game with the relevant TF just formed and about to depart Rabaul.

Wpae008.pws (to follow with next post) is the immediate post-combat situation on 14 Aug. TF 27 is en route from Rabaul. At this stage too the TF has the correct instructions to go to target base and pick up designated unit.

HTH.

Thanks, Don!

I must be some sort of Jonah in view of the problems I'm having with my shipping. Not only have I hit the same problem with a repeat of the evacuation attempt, but I have also hit problems with trying to make one TF follow another.

Posting further saves as before - this time wpae009.pws.zip ('before') and wpae010.pws.zip ('after').

This time the evac. TF that doesn't pick up any troops is TF 47. Up to the point shown in the 009 save it was being followed by another fast transport TF (which was hopefully getting some ASW protection from the evac TF's ships), but at the point shown I had cancelled the 'follow' order, so at this point TFs 47 and 48 are proceeding independently to the same destination. The 010 save shows that TF 47 is on its way back to base, but has again failed to pick up any part of the designated LCU.

Next problem. In the turn previous to the 009 save I had instructed TF6 (amphib.) to meet TF5 (ASW) then follow it, trailing it by zero hexes. The 009 shows the point at which the TF's have actually rendezvoused, and the ops report specifically mentions TF 5 slowing down for TF 6 to catch up. However, save 010 shows these two TF's have now separated with the fast ASW group drawing away from the slow amphib. ships. Thus the slow ships have lost their intended ASW close escort.

Final problem. There are various TF's with 'follow' orders, with the lead ASW TF 51 being followed by other TF's, each with an order to trail TF 51 by 1 hex, but with no stand-off at destination. In turn these following TF's are followed by other TF's but with NO separation. Thus, for example, TF 52 is to trail TF 51 by 1 hex, and in turn TF 12 is to trail TF 52 by 0 Hex - hope that's clear! Problem is that save 010 shows all these TF's in the same hex (short of their destination); i.e. the orders issued have failed to make TF 51 perform its role as a vanguard anti-submarine sweep.

Hope these saves help to demonstrate the problems I am encountering - quite ready to acknowledge that they may result from some unmet condition I have overlooked.
