An Air ASW question

Post by hbrsvl »

Hi-Playing Allies, late 1/42, scen.9.

Do Allied ASW aircraft on patrol EVER attack spotted enemy SS? My PBYs are using bombs. I assume my Hudsons, OS2Us, etc. are armed.

Plenty of times I get a report like (xxx suadron planes have spotted enemy SS at yyy, speed zzz, etc.)

But I do not recall ever seeing "PBY attacking I-xxx at hex yyy, etc."

Comments, please.

Thanks, Hugh Browne

It happens. But if you want it to happen more frequently, switch some of the A/C covering the area to ASW once you spot a sub. But remember that, dating back to 2x3 days, ASW missions have only half the range of naval scouting. This is wrong (just take a look at the use of B-24's in the Atlantic), but doesn't seem likely to be changed any time soon (even though you would think "vectors" would make it a more doable proposition).

The main difference between naval search and ASW search was altitude, which affected range of spotting.

I brought it up in the Developer's Forum..., so we'll just have to wait and see if correcting it generates any interest among the "Honchos"...

Until your pilots get to the 70+ exp, you won't attack consistantly.[;)]

2000' for sub spotting and attack.

So, naval search...
High altitude will spot large TF's.
Lower altitudes spot smaller TF's.

This is it in a nutshell.[:D]
