The first turn has been played, a mixed bag of results really. It was a dissapoiting day for the Spitfire pilots, the high cover squadron for one of the raids was repeatedly bounced by the Luftwaffe on their way out and lost 11 aircraft [X(][X(] Typhoon losses on the other hand were low for an aircraft engaged in low level bombing raids.

Reports are that Emden has been hit hard by BC with Amsterdam taking moderate damage. The losses for BC were light, less than 2.5% of the bombers dispatched and they were all Stirlings which I expected to take some knocks. BC priority is getting rid of these aircraft and replacing them with some real hardware [:D]

The VIII AF raid wasn't too great, the target was obscured by cloud so damage was only light [:(] although casualties were also light, the escorts here did much better than their colleagues escorting the Tiffies.

Not sure how Swift saw things, all in all it could have been better for me but it could have been much worse. Remember, it's a marathon not a sprint...

Like secrets, but more so. In fact it's so secret that even the super-secret German war winning weapons were not that secret [:D]

Turn one was a not very active day,
only few heavy raids, and nothing deep into the Reich.

Turn two was more interesting, Dixie now saw that day fighters can patrol above enemy territory....and he used that feature well on the toe of Italy.
Also BC was now much more active with two bigger missions, but somehow I do not think Dixie will be happy....half of his BC losses are from his Lancaster III units.
I think he has only two or three of those units at the start. [8D]
He can forget upgrading if this happens more often [;)]

Turn 2

The learning continues. Whilst I played the original BTR I've not played it in a while, so Swift has the advantage in experience. So I have to make up for it through other ways like learning faster than I normally would [:D]

The main events in turn 2 were:
The US 8th AF targetted Rouen, moderate damage was caused in return for the loss of 1 escort fighter. Whilst I would have liked more damage it's a learning curve for my little e-commanders as well as for me.

Bomber Command carried out three seperate raids. The main effort was against Essen with most damage concentrated in the SW of the city. My small force of Lanc IIIs was sent against the rubber factory at Buna, where I lost 19 of them. A third raid was out against a French railyard. Losses overall tonight were heavier than turn 1, although that's expected dur to the longer distance and better defences of the targets.

In Italy a series of raids in the south resulted in several fierce battles. Swift lost a chunk of his fighters when some Re2002s got bounced in their landing circuit by a Spitfire squadron. It looks like it's not just me that's going to learn some lessons [:'(]

20th August 1943

Today was, all told, a succesful one really. Good weather meant plenty of scope for air operations, especially in Italy.
A concentrated effort against half a dozen Luftwaffe and RA airfields across the South resulted in several hours of near continous action. The raids were a mixed selection of tactical bomber raids, fighter bombers and fighter sweeps aimed at the airfields in the 'toe' of Italy resulting in heavy damage to the airfields targetted and losses to the Axis forces, both in the air and on the ground. Even the clipped Spit Vs managed to hold their own and score some decent successes in air combat.

Over France things were quieter, 2 TAF sent a few Typhoons and Bostons out to bomb tactical targets. A few aircraft were lost to AA fire, air combat was limited and was fairly evenly balanced. A brief raid was carried out by the B-17s against Abbeville railyard but the main effort in Northern Europe was directed towards recce.

Bomber Command put in a maximum effort night. Short range raids against French and Dutch coastal facilities were followed up by heavy raids to the Ruhr. In total 950 heavy bombers were sent against 4 cities in Happy Valley, Duisburg, Munchengladbach, Essen and Dusseldorf. Good bombing accuracy was achieved clustered around the industrial facilities used as aiming points, and the bomber loss rate was an astounding 0.8% [X(][X(] Night intruder missions rounded out the RAF effort resulting in several kills, including three 110s falling to one pilot in quick succession. The prize kill though has to be one of the much vaunted He219s falling to the defensive .303 weapons of (iirc) a Halifax after the bomber was bounced [8D]


The end result for the day was an almost equal loss score, 40 Allied a/c lost to all causes with 41 German and Italian types lost in or combat and on the ground. Add in the damage caused to 4 cities, airfields and radar sites as well as the morale effects for the Axis forces of having their safe bases blitzed and I'm pleased with the end result.
