Yes, it's the Zeros and their (in)ability to perform the Picard maneuver to get at the Fortresses. Been there (at 32.860 ft), done that:

the problem isn´t that a Zero can´t reach a B-17... that´s realistic.... the problem is that the whole effects of high alt. combat (20k) are not really included, and that the accuracy of allied bombers attacking from high alts. is toooooo high.... much much much too high. moreover combat in the Pacific above 20k was quite seldom.... for many reasons
