3 weeks of observations and playing

From the front lines in France and Russia to the deserts of North Africa and the airfields and convoys of Britain, the campaigns of World War II are yours to command in WW2: Time of Wrath! This turn-based grand strategy title, the highly improved and expanded sequel to WW2: Road to Victory, puts the player in charge of the political, economic and military decisions of one or more Axis or Allied nations, including minor nations.

3 weeks of observations and playing

Post by bo »

My first post here several weeks ago was loaded with anger against Matrix and its handling of MWIF, it was vented on the wrong forum [this one] I was properly chastised by the members here [as I should have been] I apoligized for my stupid comments and I feel most of the community forgave me. I would now like to rate this game after playing it for several weeks. This is not taking in the changes in 1.60 [where is it?] as I dont like betas I will wait for the official 1.60.

1-Naval warfare [rating B] I feel the naval warfare is adequate, it flows around the land war quite well as this is a land warfare game in my opinion. I am not thrilled by naval combat or the sea zones but again there adequate, I have to agree with everything Michael the Pole about the naval part of the game and it should be implemented in the Pacific game, but in this game if no changes are made I wont lose any sleep over it.

2-Air warfare [rating b+] again 1.60 will have changes I am not aware of yet, but in gerneral its very decent, I think ranges are changed in 1.60 and should be. One aspect of it is no airpower should be able to wipe out any ground unit, shatter it, disorganize it yes destroy it NO.

3-Airborne [rating A] not much to like or dislike except there should be a limit on the number of units that could be built depending on the nation building them.

4-Land combat [rating A] very well done, the combination of attacks the AP movements, the allowance you can go back to the original corp or division and keep attacking as long as you have Ap's is excellent, very well done. Have a problem with zones of control, but in general works well.

5-Build units and deployment. [ rating d] Major problem for me, to easy to build if you have enough PP's and the deployment is very poorly done. Now I am not a programmer and I dont understand code for changing things, but I know what looks right and feels right when I play a game any game not just this one, and this system does neither for me. All units should be and must be built in any sectors of the home nation [Germany,Italy, British Isles etc.] and nowhere else, and redeployed in the next move to any area you wish that you control. And under no conditions should units be allowed to be built and deployed next to conquered cities or ports. I know Michael the Pole disagreed with this by saying could I please understand that his excellent chief of staff would have planed this all a year ago so its alright to do this. Well if thats the case Herr Hitler should have had Michael's chief of staff and we would still speaking German if he did use him. Imagine this scenario, I forgot to defend a city properly do to fog of war and out of the mist comes several enemy units ready to capture my city , aha I build 6 infantry units and place them around the city cool huh. Another one, I have captured say Lyons in France and I build 3 armored diviaions or corps and place them next to the Lyons unit that captured the city, boy thats realistic. My chief of staff did not know a year ago I was going to capture Lyons [maybe] but just in case he was ready. My father told me one day if you [me] dont think something is not right, it may be or not be. But if you use common sense and put all your prejudices aside [not easy to do] you will know what is right and what is wrong, if you dont agree with me fine but tell me where I am wrong please.
Overall very good game.

Ok agreed I just felt the game is about land warfare not sea warfare and the sea game flows around the land warfare quite well and is sorta in the background but in their new game it has to be out front and bold especially the carriers, and if they make it the same as this seawar[TOW] then I will not buy it. On the 5 one it is the building of units in far away lands that is just not right, and everyone can be as abstract as they want about but it will never sit well with me and trust me no one enjoys instant gratification in a war game more than me and the build policy in TOW is the most instant gratification I have ever seen in any war game.

Outside of a few minor naval battles in Europe, the real action was in the Atlantic. Uboats vs destroyers and convoys. I feel this game plays that well. I would hope if they do a PTO of this game they put more action at sea then land....

A&A these people [Wastelands] are very good at what they do and I am sure they will put out a very good game, the one mistake they might make that could hurt them is not listening to the forum people, eg. Wastelands [if they dont have an ego problem] should post on the forum if its not already too late what would players who purchase this game like to see in the Pacific game and then sift out the ideas which I know will be excellent and incorporate those that would enhance their game and please the majority of players here. I understand better now that some things cant be done because of coding but why wouldn't a company pick the brains[not me] of some solid knowledgeable war gaming people who post on this forum.

Bo, I respect your acquaintance with strategic games, but please give us some free space to breath and hold your horses until SoP is released.

Once again I assure you we do listen to the community, because it is our duty. I can answer to every post of yours with such a comment, and say that we do listen, but I much rather focus on development instead.

Also I assure you we do a lot internal discussion regarding  what is written at the forum, naturally in Polish to speed up the process of development. Every suggestion form everyone is welcomed and what does matter in our deliberations  is only and exclusively feasibility of a feature or a tweak.

Also I assure you we read a lot of books and within the team we have a few real ww2 geeks so we are aware of most weak spots in ToW. This knowledge, which is also gained thanks to players` remarks, help us to improve the game, but doesn`t sweep away objective limits.

If you want to help us then why not to make another AAR which could be a great material for us for future tweaks in ToW, and maybe even for SoP?

I suggest a Huge Wastlands interactive party with your next game release, with lots of beer and whatever cool Polish food I have never had! Hey it never hurts to ask!

Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to seeing your future products.

Anraz I feel your taking me wrong, somwhere above you mentioned that english was your second language, its not the english that is confusing its the meaning between what we say and how you interpet what we say, if you reread above I did not say you dont listen to the forums I said it would be a mistake not to listen to knowledgeable players in the forums. You said hold my horses until SOP is finished actually I was answering A&A about the new game, after the game is out its too late for some real good comments we are kind of stuck with it good or bad, if you truly understood some of my observations of this game my only complaint was about building units in lands other than the homeland, there were people hear voicing displeasure over your naval part of the game, I said I think the naval game works well flowing around the land warfare is that negativity, but it will not work in SOP and that to me is a fact. For reality purposes you froze german units on the french border so that a german offensive might go along historical lines eg. may 1940 offensive, I actually think that was a good idea even though I saw comments against the freeze, so in my opinion you chose to keep players tied to a historical dateline which in my opinion was a good idea and then turn around and do something way out in left field [look up that term] like where units can be built, sorry very wrong.
I am not unhappy about the game I said in earlier the game plays well and I like it! Also above I told A&A that Wastelands are pretty darn good about what they do and will put out a good SOP game. [missed that one huh!] Believe it or not Anraz I am pretty easy going guy but like I said to a player who was cheating in COD2 I will empty two stg44 clips into your dead body, stick a nade where the sun dont shine and pull the pin and then after that I am going to get nasty.[:D]
P.S. There is one thing in forums that tick me off and that people dont read the whole post only pick out something that annoys them without taking in the whole picture of what the poster is trying to get across, the written word is tough way to get your feelings across to some one else.

Well Bo, in general I was referring to "listening" leitmotiv and some others not yet addressed issues from your several latest posts on various threads. I'm glad that you move the accent from present to future. I hope that after my clarification that we are listening now and will be listening, and also we were listening we can pass your eventual statements and close this topic.

Also I had to point out that there is different between "listening" and "following" and this different sometimes is independent of developers.

Maybe we were taking wrong each other, hopefully discussion allow to understate better one other :) So lets make word peace stronger [:D]

No problem Anraz just a matter reading each other better, my problem is and always will be if it does not look right to me I speak up and try not to make a fool of myself but I dont always succed at that. I have got to learn even at my age if something gnaws at you state it then move on. I would like to see your company be very successful in their finances and their games, it makes things better for us chickens [not derogatory please] who like to play war games.

Let me get this straight, Are you watching the girl play while you drink the beer or sharing it while playing against her (I was going to say with her but that's a bit suggestive).

Furthermore I've never met anyone who can make a 6-pack last "all night long" (now that's suggestive!). Anyway I prefer Vodka. [:'(]
