Is there a way to arrive in a hex during daylight hours?

Post by JR5555 »

I would like to avoid arriving there at night and just get there during the day. Is it possible?

If not then, I believe they should make a mission just for that.

Arriving "during the day" is wonky, depending on whether you intend surface or air combat.

Your speed for a 27 kt ship will look something like :
Mission = 2/5
Cruise = 2/2
Full = 5/5

The numbers are supposed to mean
how far you move during the day / how far you "sprint" at night.

But it's not that easy.

The phases go as follows:

Night move
Night surface combat and bombardment
Day move
AM air attack phase
PM air attack phase
Day surface combat and bombardment

Regarding air combat:
a. You do NOT attack between moves. You do NOT [move night - am attack - move day - pm attack].
b. You do [move - move - attack - attack]. So you're actually moving for both of your day and night moves, and THEN attacking twice using both air phases. Keep that in mind, that can make a huge difference in your CV battles.

Regarding naval combat or bombardments:
a. It basically checks your position after your first move pulse - Are there any badguys or base where I am? If so, then shoot at night.
b. After the second move phase, it checks again for badguys or bases. If so, then shoot during the day.
c. If you want get somewhere to surface combat or bombard at night, use "mission speed".
d. If you want get somewhere to surface combat or bombard during the day, use "full speed". The turn -before- you run in, set your destination hex (with patrol, no retire) to a hex that is x/y hexes away, where you're x+Y hexes away (so in the above example with 5/5 for speed, set your prior turn's destination hex to 5+5=10 hexes away with patrol no retire. Then, on the turn you wish to sprint in, continue at full speed, you'll move 5+ 5 hexes, and arrive during daylight.
e. You can do the same thing with cruise speed. 2/2 would be setting your prior hex to 4 hexes away. The only wrinkle is that you'd arrive at cruise speed. I have no idea if that would give you a detriment in combat.

You can calculate your (day) ending hex with mission speed. But it's dependent on how far you are from your destination hex, and a bit convoluted. It's easier to just use full or cruise speed.

Also, be advised that refueling escorts can screw up your calcuations. So make sure everyone is "topped off" (refuel at sea) with more than 4500 fuel before making that final sprint, or you might end up 2 hexes short (because you burned ops points refueling thirsty escorts).

Just stage your TF a couple of hexes further away than its max movement allowance.
E.g 4 destroyers with a top speed of 32 knots can move 6/6 hexes. This means 6 hexes during
the night and 6 hexes during the daylight phase. Staging this TF 8 hexes away from its intended target,
and it will arrive during the day phase.

Hi, "Retire" means arrive at night. "Do not retire" means arrive during day if able.

I think it is bound to the speed selection, at least for bombardment and invasion TFs.

At cruise/mission speed they will always arrive at night, stopping short in the last movement phase the day before if neccessary.
At full speed the TFs will go in asap. So if you want to arrive at day the TF has to stop outside of its night movement range the day before (and 'Do not retire') and then switched to move in at full speed the next day.

I have the occasional problem with naval bombardment TFs where all ships have at least 5000 fuel/endurance and slowest ship is about 26 knots. Mission set to bombardment/retire/full speed and I've arrived 5 hexes away from the target hex, but the TF only moves ONE hex in total.

Most of the time I arrive at night, bombard then retire but I'd like to know why sometimes the TF only moves 1 or 2 hexes.

Reedster, I think your task force cannot move all the way to its target tonight, so it moves to 4 hexes distance, which will allow it to bombard the target tomorrow night after a 4 hex move.

Mobeer, yeah but the question is why did my TF only move 1 hex. Is it random?

Most of the time my bombardment TFs have no problem moving (at full speed) 5 or 6 hexes, arrive at night and bombard, then withdraw.

Moving only 1 hex is especially dangerous if the base has aircraft on naval attack.
