MCLV: On to Uman??
I've just gotten out of the Pripet Marshes (finally, I hope) and the scenario is on a huge open map (~240 hexes N to S, very few woods or swamps). It appears to want me to move my force from the North edge of the map to the South as there are Exit Hexes there. I'm wondering if this scenario is one of those with the Exit Hex scoring problem and if so, what's the best way to attack this thing?
It looks fairly straight forward (don't they all?). I'd hate to screw this up and be thrown back into the Pripet Marshes just because I didn't understand the scoring system.
I haven't seen anyone comment on Kiev or Uman in the Forum. Everyone seems to be talking about the Marshes and Dubno or Radechiew (sp?).
Thanks for any comments (but don't give away surprises, please).

An AAR on Radziechow
Here is a link to the thread that Gary did and AAR on LV AAR that might help.
Re: An AAR on Radziechow
Thanks, but I'm aware of all the Radziechow AARs and discussions. However, I haven't seen anything on this road to Uman that I find myself on. Uman is what I'm interested in. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that.Originally posted by gmenfan

Apparently, HQ has decided we will be taking Uman, not Kiev as the Russians are anticipating. I think I am a lead element in an encirclement maneuver to cut-off a Russian Army Group from escaping into "the vastness of the Russian East."
Uman is south of Kiev.

I will tell you that I have seen Kiev, but that is all...
Currently, I'm waiting on the patch to fix the missing text in some scenario descriptions; You'll be coming upon that issue soon.
Just to reinforce what gmemfan stated earlier, don't expect your forces to be able to catch their breath. The fighting gets downright brutal.

Thanks Tiger, I was afraid of that.
With all that wide-open terrain, I'm not sure how to attack this situation. I think it is probably a good idea to set a timetable (e.g. 200 hexes to cover and 20 turns to do it, means I have to move at least 10 hexes per turn to be able to exit the map). It sure looks like a long way to go even if there is light resistance.
Oh, boy, here we go...

refresh my memory, what does the map look like? I can give a couple of pointers, but no spoilers, promise....Originally posted by rbrunsman

It is a very big map with marshland on the very west edge (Pripet Marshes?) next to that runs a north to south road for the length of the map (~240 hexes) the eastern 2/3 of the map is just open terrain broken by clumps of woods, small hills and (maybe) a few villages. My units are all just parked in convoy formation at the top of the map on the road. There a several VHs interspersed along the road, but the bottom of the map is the objective as there are Exit VHs on the edge of the map.
The background reading said that the Russians fully anticipated an assault on Kiev (to my units's east), but that the Germans decided to sweep to the southeast to cut off a eliminate a Russian Army Group around the area of Uman.
Is it better to exit my units as they arrive or should I plan on exiting everyone at once at the end of the scenario because of the scoring glitch the computer has when you exit a game and finish it later. (This would be the same problem you have of losing points when there are "per turn" VHs and you exit a game.)
Thanks.

Be careful, you cannot always trust what you see. You know this as well as I do, if you've come this far in the campaign. Look carefully at the map, what advantages does it provide to you/the Russians? Look at every possibility. What was said about the difference between victory and defeat?? This is one of my favorite scenarios, it can be extremely challenging!Originally posted by rbrunsman

I haven't started it yet, but my worst nightmare would be a bunch of those **** hard to spot 45mm AT guns. I think I'll use a lot of smoke at suspected ambush sites and run for it.
Thanks for the hints. It sounds like this is not a meeting engagement but rather a set-up for a delay action by the Soviets.

my 2 cents
I vaguely remember playing this scenario a while back. There are some interesting situation (close to the map center, you'll find out
) However, if memory serves the victory exit hexes at the bottom of this map do not work. I suspect that it's a bug, but then it could have been the designer's deceit too (fog of war, you know). I remember parking many units on those hexes for multiple turns and yet they don't disappear or score exit points. Please let me know if it turns out the same way for you or not.
Even so, it's still possible to achieve victory score by destorying the many enemy units around the map. So good luck!

Great. That's the kind of response I was really interested in. I'd hate to avoid a conflict just so I can race to the bottom of the map and then sit there without gaining victory points. I think I shall try to sterilize the area of all resistance rather than race to the south and string out my units only to be counterattacked. I did that in another Exit Hex scenario and it nearly cost me a lot.
Do you have an estimate of how far I am through this MC? It seems like I must be more than half way through but it sounds like I might not be.

Tiger wanted to know how this turned out for me:
Well it was pretty easy. There were very few 45mm AT guns in hiding to slow me down, there were bunches of Conscripts in wagons which were easy to dispatch and the Russian tanks that appeared as reinforcements were way too late in arriving. So pretty much I just rolled over everything in my path and sat at the exit hexes for about 4 turns until the game ended. It was an easy Major Victory since I lost very few units and wiped out everything that got in my way.
The next scenario is on a small map so the fighting should be intense.
I can't wait to see Kiev.
(this scenario took so long to play because I squeezed in a 2 week vacation and my PBEM addiction is not waning.)
