East coast-Panama movement question

Post by hbrsvl »

Hi-Scen.6, 2/42. I have Hornet at EC, but no escorts. Is there risk of a U-Boat getting her on the way to Panama?

Thanks, Hugh Browne

No, there are virtual escorts off map that protect off map movement.  The U-boats were pulled back from the East Coast of the US in Feb 42 anyway.  Doenitz was afraid that the US was going to pull all its escorts back to the coast and nail a bunch of u-boats on the shallow continental shelf.

Except for that brief period, u-boats didn't tend to operate along the routes used by off map convoys in the game (and even when off the US shore they're priority target were oil tankers bound for Canada).  They were much more concerned with strangling British supply lines than helping the Japanese.
