Eagle Day to Bombing of the Reich is a improved and enhanced edition of Talonsoft's older Battle of Britain and Bombing the Reich. This updated version represents the best simulation of the air war over Britain and the strategic bombing campaign over Europe that has ever been made.
In setting up ED and BTR into one interface I've had to do some if.then programming, mostly it's worked, but there's always something that slips through. This was one...
Ha, played till 2:30 am yesterday.....ok, I am officially addicted now.
Learned that Recon ACs need to be @ high altitude like in WITP & AE.
Now I teach the brits in the one week campaign 1940 some lessons with the Luftwaffe. Already punched a hole in their radar coverage on day 2 [;)]
I was afraid that planing is a killer of the game but once you got used to the ancient user interface raids are made quickly ready to rock & roll....
I am not sure, if in the long campaign games, your own personal tactics are pay off but we will see. happy with the game esp with the -w switch like in witp & AE - a must have imho.
Any ideas how to cancle the slow turn progress ???[&:]
Not quite a newbie, I had Talonsoft's Battle for Britain so the basics were familiar.
I've played 3-4 turns of 3-4 scenarios of Bombing the Reich now and am about to start on a longer campaign. (Lost 130+ B17 on the Schweinfurt raid!!)
Hats off to the developers, while I'd have reservations about a few minor items, they have expanded the original into a reasonably good game of the Allied bombing campaign.
Little quibble, elsewhere I had seen complaints about the bf109G6, ditto, they get wiped out like flies.
IMHO, some things to improve the game:
The map graphics & aircraft icons need sharpening up, I'm a WITP fan and the maps & icons there are excellent, though still at a basic level. I play this with the plane icons turned off but with the little squares.
Selecting units for a raid, why cant I select all units of 5 Group or 1st Bomber Division etc, not pick them up 1 by 1. Equally in the between day phase, I want to look at my air units by HQ, not by aircraft type, have the option available.
Editing !!!!!!! One of the greatest things of WITP & TOAW is the ability to edit the database to create their own version or scenario. I want to see the effect of, for example no P-51 and have them replaced by P-63's. Equip Lancasters & Halifaxes with 50cals and fly in daylight. Meteors or P-80s in mid 1944. An Editor makes the game potential limitless. I would also like to see/make a scenario of the RAF operations into NW Europe in 1941-42.

I like the plane icons, but tend to turn them and the music off during play so the turn will execute as fast as possible. The thing I like best about the game is the depth of strategy and vast variety of options available to win the war with the fewest casualties. The BTR full campaign is 700 turns so I tend to invest my time in planning & go refill my coffee cup during execution. Of course, when playing the Germans, you have to play during the execution of the Allied turn which presents an etirely new set of strategic challenges. This game is a strategy players delight! Sure hope it runs in Windows 7 (when the time comes).

(not trying to be smart, but, didn't they get knocked down like flies ? the G6 was old, worn out design (and the 109 is one of my RL Fav's) it was basicly slow and heavy, didn't dance like it did in the old days when it was the terror of the skies, the G14 was an attempt to correct the faults and upgrade as much as they could, the K4 was the end of the line for Upgrading, the G10 was to get all of the good fixes to the 14/4 into a basic model, for ease of production, what over 30,000 of them made, and not many made it past the end of the war, in the game as in RL, in the hands of a good pilot, it can do wonders, in the hands of a rookie, it is a coffin)

as stated else where, if we can get plane art in the 180*180 scale, we can do wonders with the plane art, but until then, we are stuck with what we have, what modders can come up with

Equally in the between day phase, I want to look at my air units by HQ, not by aircraft type, have the option available. then why don't you ? go to summery screen, then OOB, each HQ is listed and each command with in the HQ is listed, with what is in that command ?

If the modders can do it, I cant wait for the Devs to catch up, I dont want the Icons to represent the aircraft involved, just be a smaller & crisper image

But can I do this during raid selection? Why not the ability to select a HQ and then select the Sqns/Groups you want, should make creating a raid a lot faster. I dont want to keep a manual record of the OOB, thats what a Computer is for.

Finally took the plunge and purchased BTR, despite the rather mediocre reviews. I have nothing to complain about the interface and whoever does, probably never played the old Talonsoft games. The overhauled visuals, new added art, higer resolution and capability to play in windowed mode are well recieved.
However, the technical side looks less bright. Even with explosions / night off, message level 0 and flight lines enabled, the game literally crawls on a Quadcore, Win 7x64 and tends to crash when I switch some options during realtime phase. The original did run at least twofold as fast on my PII 400 back to the day. In addition it asks me to insert a volume everytime I start the game. Guess this relict is alike from old code.
To say it as canny as possible: BTR is less polished as other remastered games I purchased, like JTCS or TOAW, and probably should not have pass Matrix QA yet. I won't ramble here because I can imagine how much work HS and Harley put into this project, but please release a patch as soon as possible, to fix these nuisances.
Hmm. This game will run fine on your machine with a bit of tweaking. There are a lot of platforms out there and a bunch of different OSs so personally I don't think that it is so bad if they concentrate on the game play first.
Night Off seems to be a big winner. Also, if I Right click on the icon and choose Properties and then Compatibility, I found the big fix to be clicking "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings." This is assuming that you have Vista because anything earlier cannot use the extra memory that you probably jammed in to the machine (I certainly did!).
Good luck and perservere just a little bit. Once this is over the game can take over your life.
I agree. It appears that the way the game runs on diffeent systems is highly variable.
May I suggest that the devs give some thought to offering users a menu of exe switches that can be employed or not, as needed? The developers of WitP-AE came up with a handful of them in their first patch and it made a BIG difference in performance
Quad Cores (and some Duel) has issues, that we didn't see, until released
we are working on the patch, we are working with Matrix and the guys from WitP:AE
not every Quad Core has issues, it is based on computer, but we have some fixes in place to try and make the computer work with the game
right now, mine flys with the changes (with everything turned on)
my new system got here about 2 days after I handed the game over to Matrix, or I would of seen it, but, I don't think mine is/was as bad as some have reported
