Historical Fact
Furutaka (Cruiser, 1926-1942)
Furutaka, lead ship of a class of two 7100-ton heavy cruisers, was built at Nagasaki, Japan. Commissioned in March 1926, she spent the next five years as a unit of the Fifth Squadron (Sentai), making several cruises to Chinese waters as well as participating in the rigorous combat exercises conducted in peacetime by the Japanese Navy. Furutaka was in reserve, mainly receiving repairs and alterations, from late 1931 until mid-1933. She then resumed her previous pattern of fleet maneuvers and operations off China, serving with the Sixth Squadron and later with the Seventh. Late in 1936, she was inactivated and early in the next year began a major reconstruction.

When this work was completed in mid-1939, Furutaka had been significantly altered. Her six-gun main battery was now carried in twin turrets instead of the original single gun mounts. Her hull was wider, displacement greater, torpedo battery rearranged and boilers replaced with newer types. Improved gunfire controls and anti-aircraft batteries contributed to her changed appearance. She thereafter served with the Sixth Squadron, which operated primarily in home waters until shortly before the outbreak of the Pacific War.

During the first ten months of the war with the United States and its allies, Furutaka and the rest of the Sixth Squadron traveled widely. They participated in the capture of Guam and Wake islands in December 1941 and were engaged in offensive operations in the New Guinea and Solomon Islands area in March-May 1942. Early in the latter month, Furutaka took part in the Battle of the Coral Sea. When the Allies seized Guadalcanal and Tulagi in August 1942, the Sixth Squadron was sent on a counter-assault mission, forming the majority of Japanese forces engaged in the highly-successful night Battle of Savo Island on 9 August.

Furutaka and her companions served as a covering force for Japanese efforts to retake Guadalcanal during the rest of August and into October 1942. On 11 October they steamed southwards on a mission to bombard enemy positions on that island, not realizing that a strong U.S. Navy cruiser-destroyer force was also in the area. The resulting Battle of Cape Esperance, on the night of 11-12 October 1942, repulsed the Japanese ships. Furutaka was gravely damaged, with her crew suffering heavy casualties. After efforts to control flooding and get underway proved futile, her surviving crew members was taken off. Furutaka sank soon thereafter

The captain of I-18 had launched his midget sub at Pearl on Dec 7th. Since that time they were ordered south to patrol around Pago then Penrhyn islands. Nothing had been seen and the crew was getting restless. As they were doing the regular patrol the sound man announces high speed screw sounds to the starboard. The captain orders the periscope raised and as he quickly scans he spots 5 destroyers. Wasting no time he lowers the periscope and orders a crash dive.

The crew is tense as shortly after they hear a ping on the hull of their sub.

11 February 1943:
Coral Sea. 200 miles S of San Cristobal. The I-18 reports sighting an American task force. An OS2U "Kingfisher" from VCS-9 of the light cruiser USS HELENA (CL-50) spots a submarine about nine miles from the task force. The floatplane drops a smoke marker and calls the nearby USS FLETCHER (DD-445) in to attack. The FLETCHER gains sonar contact at 2,900 yards on the bow. At 1527, she drops a pattern of depth charges At 1539, large oil and air bubble breaks the surface. Four minutes later a heavy explosion follows. Three additional depth charges are dropped in center of the diesel oil area. After 1546, wreckage, cork, wood and other gear surface in very large oil slick. The I-18 sinks at 14-15S, 161-53E with all 102 hands.****

The dutch planes finally find their mark and sink 2 transports[:(]. These transports have ability to carry fuel and loaded with troops and supplies, they go up like matchsticks, I don't recommend they be used under enemy air cover.

Historical Fact:
Do-24K

The Dornier Do 24 was designed to meet a Dutch navy requirement for a replacement of the Dornier Wals being used in the Dutch East Indies. It was an all-metal monoplane with a broad-beamed hull and stabilising sponsons. The aircraft was powered by three wing-mounted radial engines. The first two aircraft built were fitted with 447 kW (600 hp) Junkers Jumo 205C diesel engines. The next two had 652 kW (875 hp) Wright R-1820-F52 Cyclones, this was to meet a Dutch requirement to use the same engines as the Martin 139. The third aircraft (with Cyclone engines) was the first to fly on 3 July 1937. Six Dutch aircraft (designated Do 24K-1) were built in Germany, followed by a further aircraft built under licence by Aviolanda in the Netherlands (designated Do 24K-2).

Only 25 aircraft had been built on the Aviolanda assembly line before the German occupation. The Luftwaffe were interested in the completed and partially completed aircraft. The Dutch production line continued to produce aircraft under German control. 11 airframes were completed with Dutch-bought Wright Cyclone engines, but later models used the BMW Bramo 323R-2. A further 159 Do 24s were built in Holland during the occupation, most under the designation Do 24T-1.

It had to be an accident! I've played into April '42 and I think the Dutch managed a total of four hits during the war. They've been awful!

The Dutch haven't hit crap in both my games, but I have noticed they carry 300KG
bombs, not 300lb bombs....big different. A 300KG bomb, i.e. 660 lbs, is pretty big. It should hurt a transport, particularly one that is loaded with supplies and fuel.

So, they can't hit anything, but if they do hit, it will hurt.

South Pacific
After the fall of Port Morseby and CA raid on Noumea this area has been quiet. Recon from Luganville has noted troop strength went from 6 units to 8 and planes appeared with last convoy. This forced us to move up our time schedule and on the 14th 2 Naval Gds units landed at Koumac. They were meet by a ragtag group of enemy planes, apparently Zero's from Luganville did not provide the requested CAP (maybe to far?). We shall take the undefended Koumac on the 15th then go about dealing with thouse 16k of troops at Noumea.

The Japanese had spotted two small task forces unloading at Noumea for the last few days. This prompeted the rush for an invasion, although rushed it did not come empty handed as the KB was ready and some BB's were following. The KB may have been spotted on the 14th we are not sure, but they rushed to the SE of Noumea on the 14th to find nothing. With our transport under attack the KB decided to move closer to Noumea and moved to within 120 miles SE. The allied command had undetected also moved in a force of cruisers to deal with the invaders in the north. The Morning of the 15th opened with both sides at extreme range and surprised!

A convoy is spotted far south of Noumea and KB sends a welcoming wakeup.

USS Boise (CL-47) was a United States Navy Brooklyn-class light cruiser. The cruiser was named for Boise, the capital city of the state of Idaho. Boise was launched 3 December 1936.

Service in the Argentine Navy (1951-1978)
She was sold to Argentina 11 January 1951 along with her sister USS Phoenix, where they were commissioned as the ARA Nueve de Julio ("9 July", Argentina's Independence Day) and ARA General Belgrano respectively. During her years as an Argentinian warship she took part of the so called Revolución Libertadora, shelling some oil depots and other targets around the coastal city of Mar del Plata, on September 19, 1955. She remained in service with the Argentine Navy until 1978, when she was decommissioned and towed to Japan for scrapping.

The KB split apart with 4 CV's chasing the fleeing remnants of the allied cruiser force and 2 CV's trying to pick off transports. The 2 CV's found nothing where the 4 CV's took out the entire cruiser force and escorts if our Samurais are to believed. Unfortunatly this chase lead to just off Brisbane. Where P40's and A-24 Banshee's break thru one day for an attack on oilers, and the second to line up on 3 Carriers [X(]

The AVG and company try to put up resistance at Rangoon but over 50 zeros chase them away. We will be landing troops at Pegu tommorrow.
I think I have waited to long to go into Burma but with this landing I should accelerate things.


Historical fact
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a naval dive bomber made by Douglas during World War II. The SBD was the United States Navy's main dive bomber from mid-1940 until late 1943, when it was supplanted, although not entirely replaced, by the SB2C Helldiver.

The Northrop BT-1 provided the basis for the SBD, which began manufacture in 1940. Ed Heinemann led a team of designers who considered a development with a 1,000 hp (746 kW) Wright Cyclone powerplant. A year earlier, both the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps had placed orders for the new dive bombers, designated the SBD-1 and SBD-2 (the latter had increased fuel capacity and different armament). The SBD-1 went to the Marine Corps in late 1940, and the SBD-2 went to the Navy in early 1941.

The next version, designated SBD-3, began manufacture in early 1941. It provided increased protection, self-sealing fuel tanks, and four machine guns. The SBD-4 provided a 12 volt (from 6) electrical system, and a few were converted onto SBD-4P reconnaissance platforms.

U.S. Army Air Corps A-24 Banshee saw limited combat in the early days of the Southwest Pacific in 1942.The next (and most produced) variant, the SBD-5, was primarily produced at the Douglas plant at Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was equipped with a 1,200 hp (895 kW) engine and increased ammunition. Over 2,400 were built, and a few were shipped to the Royal Navy for evaluation. In addition to American service, the type saw combat against the Japanese with No. 25 Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, which soon replaced them with F4U Corsairs, and against the Germans with the Free French Air Force. A few were also sent to Mexico. The final version, the SBD-6, provided more improvements but production ended in summer 1944.

The U.S. Army had its own version of the SBD, known as the A-24 Banshee, which lacked the tail hook used for carrier landings, and a pneumatic tire replaced the solid tail wheel. First assigned to the 27th Bombardment Group (Light) at Hunter Field, Ga., A-24s participated in the Louisiana maneuvers during September 1941. There were three versions of the Banshee (A-24, the A-24A and A-24B) used by the Army in the early stages of the war.[1] The USAAF used 948 of the 5,937 Dauntlesses built.
