Wastage

Post by Uxbridge »

Bleck, Anraz, Doomie!

Maybe you saw my idea with productional attrition in the thread Control of economy. I've been speculating about a PP-stock reducing method for a while and even suggested a moddable line in consts for a future upgrade to Doomie.

Now it suddenly dawned upon me that this could probably be done within the events engine. I have looked at the events system, but knowing that my intellectual capacity is only slightly above that of the average village idiot, I need some help.

I therefore ask if someone at Wasteland could produce for me an event, that will lower each major country's present PP-stock once every turn with a certain percentage (that I can then change)? I'm not refering to the present turn income, but to the stocked pool of PPs. It would be nice if all majors have a speific event, to set their levels differently, but it will suffice with just one event for all majors in case making six is time-consuming for the person doing it. Maybe we could call the event "Waste".

The provisions for the event should thus be:

It must trigger each turn (preferably before PP allocation, but not necessarily)
It must affect all six majors
Individual sub-events to tell countries apart is nice, but not necessary
It needs no player input, but works automatically
It should not be visible to the players and need not show up in any reports

It would be extremely helpful if someone could assist me with this, and I don't think the time spent for the developer doing it will be totally wasted either. The issue of how to balance the economies haven't been finally settled, and this could very well be a step in the right direction. I do firmly believe that the interaction between upkeep and "Waste" - forcing the player to always spend a little but never too much - will take a huge step towards elimination all questions of certein economies growing to large.

If I understand it right, the waste event (if created) can be placed in the universal Events folder (with its own folder called Waste) without affecting any scenarios but mine, if my ETO-scenario is the only one to have a reference to it in the events file-file?

With hope of a positive answer, Ux. [:)]

need to make sure the event is at a known date/schedule, so that the player can budget for major expenses, such as upgrading a div to corps. To upgrade an armored unit like that could cost a couple of hundred PPs, which may be more than a country makes in a turn.

Great idea though. Would add another dimension to the game.

There won't be any problem there, GW. If I set the Waste to 5 %, it will mean that if your stock is 700 PP only 35 PPs will be taken off. At these levels the PP-stock will continue to rise, but with a lesser impunity over time.

It's where the level gets really high it counts. I made a trial from 39 to June 41 with no losses taken on either side and Germany rose to about 4,500 PP and USSR to more than 6,000 PP. In these cases the results would be -225 PPs and -300 PPs respectively. This is about what these countries get each turn, why there will be a ceiling above which no country can save production. Simultaniously, the upkeep will take it's toll if the armies grow too large, so a country with a inflated economy, at peace or trying to avoid spending PPs by low combat activity, will inevitable have a large level of waste.

Ideally the waste should go up exponentially as the size of the saving increases.

However, for coding purposes how about just limiting the amount that can be saved to, for example, 10x income.

Then the code is simply like: If Saved-PP > Income-PPx10 then set Saved-PP = Income-PPx10.

Oh, I thought you were talking about your idea of every once in a while cutting a country's PP reserve in half, as a penalty for hoarding.

Simple turn by turn or monthly wastage seems pointless to me, just lower the war economy.

Have you learned to set up an event?

It's to versions of the same thing. If it could be automated, no one has to do anything; it will work by itself.

No, lowering the war economy will not be the same thing. The effect needs to be on the stockpile not the production.
