Question about Japanese computer opponent

It is February 2nd, 1942 and my carrier group just decimated a large unescorted TF of AK's just north of Raoul island. Between what the combat reports state and my recon planes show it is about 25 ships.

I know this AI is very aggresive but this seems to be pushing it.
