Excessive losses of medium bombers to rocket attacks

Eagle Day to Bombing of the Reich is a improved and enhanced edition of Talonsoft's older Battle of Britain and Bombing the Reich. This updated version represents the best simulation of the air war over Britain and the strategic bombing campaign over Europe that has ever been made.

Excessive losses of medium bombers to rocket attacks

Post by KenchiSulla »

I have been using my 190F's and G's against medium bombers in Italy. A group of 190's taking down 6 medium bombers with a volley of rockets is no exception!

Against 17's they are not so succesfull.

Are the losses of medium bombers excessive or would you call them realistic?

Historically the W.Gr. 21 rocket (mortar) was not particularly accurate, it was an adaptation of a ground weapon. The primary use of the rocket was to "break up the box" and allow stragglers to picked off individually rather than face the concentrated fire of the bombers. Direct hits were pretty rare.

but, most pilots didn't like them, so most pilots didn't work to learn the aiming systems, most fired and got rid of them as soon as they could, when they were used correctly, they did good, but...

with enemy fighters around, that became a moot point, I believe it was JG 53/77 that did a lot of aruging about having to carry them, and started to refuse to fly combat with them

but I am looking into it

he shouldn't (we shouldn't) be getting 6 kills a shot, expect as a very rare "lucky" shot (which, also remember that is not a one shot deal, that is a Gruppen doing a volly fire of 4 rockets each)

Hey sarge, I keep getting the same results if I get 20+ rocket carrying fighters in a group attacking medium bombers (4-6 kills). Best result I got against 17's was 1 damaged 2 destroyed in a volley of 40 rockets.

In the old game in the '44 scenario towards the beginning of '45 I started getting lots of attacks by rocket carrying planes, including 262s. These were devastating against the heavies, with losses similar to what is being talked about here for the mediums. Of course, it will be a few months of RL before I get far enough in my game to see if this continues to be the case.
