Database Printing Question

Post by Tom_Holsinger »

Is there any way to print selected portions of the database for use in planning a mod? Or has anyone published a printable version of it? I ordered the game CD but it hasn't yet arrived, and the PDF version of the manual does not have anything about what's in the database. I am particularly interested in accessing the data for ship classes and aircraft types, though more the former.

I was one of the co-authors of Pacific War Reports for the original Windows 3 version of this game. Gary Fortune was the other author. I am finally getting back to the subject aftter playing GGPW to death 15-20 years ago, though at the moment I am more interested in War Plan Orange. Hopefully I can access the WPO database, for printing purposes, the same way the WITP-AE database is printed.

While I dont think theres a way to print out of the game itself beyond screenshots, AE includes a tool known as WitpLoadAE, which can extract the data from a scenario into a CSV file.

This file can then be opened in a database program like excel, and the data extracted from there easily by filtering what you want using the tools in the database program.

In addition to this, WitpStaff which comes with the game will generate a database of aircraft and ship data from the scenarios values, and work out some interesting 'derived' values like Air to Air rating, True ASW power, High Altitude AA values, ect.

Thanks. I can't get WitpLoadAE to do anything. Clicking on it, or double-clicking, produces an extremely brief flicker of my monitor, but otherwise zip.

I can get WitpStaff to load, but haven't figured out yet how to load a scenario into it. This is less important given your description. WitpLoadAE sounds like what I want, but right now I don't how to make it do anything.

WitpLoadAE needs to be run from the DOS prompt.

Basically, here are the steps, incase you are not familiar with DOS;

Open up the DOS window (cmd.exe in Vista)

Go to your AE Scenario folder ([drive letter]: to change drive, cd [folder] to move into a folder)
So for D:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\SCEN, the instructions are;
D:
cd Matrix Games
cd War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition
cd SCEN

Once there, run WitploadAE by just typing WitpLoadAE <commands>

The two key commands are;
/s<number> selects the scenario by number
/e extraction

If you do not enter any commands it will try to repackage scenario 1.

To extract Scenario 2, you would use;
WitpLoadAE /s2 /e

To repackage it from the csv files if youve changed anything;
WitpLoadAE /s2

Hope this helps,
Juan

Hi Tom, I remember you and know you to be a serious modder/player. Not sure if it was you but I think it was you that sent me some fictional books back then. I was and still am a newbie (or more like nobody) but I welcome you to this forum and will follow your posts.
