Autodeploy vs human deploy

Post by Roodboy »

Help! I'm in the middle of the Russian campaign circa 41 after about 5 battles (and having a blast) however, suddenly the only way I can deploy my troops is by having the computer deploy them and then changing the dispositions manually. Human deploy is completely ignored. This is a pain in and of itself except now the computer had decided not to give me my HQ.
This is a good game but these quirks are driving me @#* crazy.
Somebody please tell me I pressed a stupid button or something.

Exit out of the game, and delete the steel.prf file in the:\MatrixGames\Steel Panthers World at War\save directory and then restart the game and adjust preferences to you liking. Or try and restart the computer and attempt a reload of saved game. It sounds like a memory leak issue. If you want, zip the save(3 files) and post here and I will try and see were things went amoke. Was this campaign created by the campaign generator.

I am kind of a technological cretin and I can't find that steel.pref file in the save directory only saved scenarios. Also I don't know how to zip the files and email them. Could you walk me through it like a three year old? Thanks.

I'll take a stab at it:

Steel.prf File Q:
The steel.prf file is in the save folder, but it isn't listed as "steel.prf", rather it is labeled "steel" and the icon looks like a key standing on end. You may have seen that one. The .prf part is not shown when your system is set to drop file extensions if it recognized the file type. I think in this case the operating system sees "steel.prf" as a database file and gives it the "key" symbol. Delete the "key" symbol file in your save folder. There may be several folders labeled "save", but you want the one just inside the SPWAW folder. IIRC

The zip & email Q:
My system is set up such that if I right click on a file (or several files by using the shift key to select multiple files) there is a option to "zip & email." If you click on that, the computer will zip the selected files and open an email message for you so that all you have to do is add and address, a comment or two and then hit send.

This is how it works on my systems (WinME at home & Win2000 at work) and I haven't done anything to tweek my systems. It seems to be a standard in Windows.

Good luck
Bob

This is really weird, I go into the save folder and see a Steel file with a picture of a gold starand a globe . When I go to open it it says this will install the pics rules file into the content advisor feature of internet explorer. Yikes! What the heck is that? Help!

That advisor feature thingy appears because Windows has already associated the .prf files to be something else that the Internet exploder uses. You can simply ignore this notice..just delete that file, when you start the game next time it will be recreated.

I deleted the file but I still have to let the computer deploy and then adust manually.
As an aside, how do you get a crew to bailout of a tank to save them for another day?

To bail out of a crewed weapon you just press the "9" key and then confirm the bail out.

As for the Computer Deploy problem. Maybe you accidentally flipped one of the "toggle switches" that appear as a scenario starts. I know that when you set up a battle, you have several options you have to toggle (some of them are the Computer Deploy, Computer Buy, etc.). I often forget to set everything to Human Control when I am playtesting some things and I don't want the computer to do any of the work. Sorry we haven't been much help to you so far.

As for your HQ unit, did you get it killed in the scenario before this one? Has it been automatically loaded on a vehicle? If you go to the "notebook" on the deploy screen and click on A0, you should be brought to the HQ unit on the map. What happens when you do that?

The HQ unit is listed in the roster but when I click on it the screen just flashes. Human deploy is still not available except by going around it as previouslydescribed. I guess i can just try another campaign but I was growing fond of my Russians.
