Multi Core Switch Issue

Post by NAVMAN »

Greetings: I have a dual core intel sys. Processors are #0 and #1.
I have the command line set to: -cpu0. When I check task mgr, while game
is running, it has a check mark for both processors. Should it not only
be checked next to processor "0"? When I uncheck "1", it will
revert to both the next time I boot up and play again. Any ideas?

Thx.

You should use -cpu1 or -cpu2.  -cpu0 does nothing.  Documentation for the processor affinity is usually 0 based, ie the first core is processor #0, but most users don't think that way, so the cpu command line switches are 1-4.  -cpu3 and -cpu4 won't work in your case since you only have a dual core.

Bill,
Thx for the info. Looks like that did the trick. Set it to cpu1. Task mgr shows
cpu0 as the active processor. Much appreciated. BTW, on systems w/Intel processors,
do games, in general, show better performance w/using one processor rather than
multiple processors? I understand it varies by system.
Thx again.

It varies a lot depending on the game and the other hardware in the computer.  Some Intel multicores have no problems with AE for example.  I think it's due to how the chipset is implemented on the motherboard.  We had to include all those switches because it's an area where there are so many differences between computers.

So should AE be using both cores, or just one?  I have a dual core, with the switch set to -cpu2 and only the 2nd cpu is being used.  first core is just idle.

I'm not sure what people have seen with Macbooks.  The best thing to do is experiment with the command line switches.  Each computer is going to be different.  The only thing I can say for sure is that a single core never needs any switches to get best performance.
