Dream Game... wont happen

Post by histgamer »

Could anyone imagine what it would be like if the new War in Russia, WITP AE, and the old West Front as well as something dealing with North Africa.... were all merged into one WITP AE like game? [X(][X(][X(]

It would take probably as long as the real war to play out but OH MY GOD that would be AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two things:

- Plenty of people have imagined this, at length.

- It would take infinitely longer than the war to play, because you'd be fulfilling the role of hundreds of thousands of people BY YOURSELF.

Platoon scale war wide?  That would be a bit much.

Perhaps Korsun Pocket's engine for ground combat?

If you're old to enough to remember Avalon Hill games, and their magazine, "The General" (or, since I am that old, maybe it was SPI in S&T), when they, jokingly, ran an article about "IT" ... WW2 on a 1:1 scale.

[8D]

Yes. One counter = 1 man. Map scale was not quite 1 m = 1 hex but, allegedly, it required a football stadium to set up just the ETO maps ...

[:D]

So, let's have on with it ... "War in the World: 1933-1950" (with optional extension packs, of course, taking it through the Cold War [;)]) on a 1:1 scale!

You could use the Doom engine for resolving battles on an individual scale ... massively multiplayer would take on a whole new meaning [8D][:D]

Bring it on! [:D][:D][:D]

I'm old enough.

I grew up on AH games. Literally. Played AH games in high school.....sometimes during class when I could get away with it! I never subscribed to the General, though.

1:1 scale and 1 hex to the meter? Funny. I like it. And I am sure that someone actually thought it could be done.

They tried this...sort of. World War 2 Online. Interesting concept. Think it is still around in another name...and I think associated with these guys in some way shape or form.

I think AE is at the maxium limit in size and scope of a playable game, look at how many don't want to even manage China! I don't even want a AE II but, would like to see something smaller in size and scope like (Falklands, War in the Med) with more detailed ship & air combat model (think Harpoon like combat with AE type campaign and logistics [;)]).

Not necessarily - we're obviously talking about a brand new engine here, so it could be coded to support multiple players on the same team, with all the needed adjustments like simultaneous orders submitting, command structure, standalone host mode for turn resolutions, completely reworked encryption/security system to allow multiple/variable accounts per side, etc.

Actually that was something I really hoped AE could implement to some degree.
Having played some games that had this system, I'm not a huge fan of the all-seeing telepathic godlike unified supreme command approach.
While 2 vs. 2 games are possible right now, the IGoUGo system to enter orders slows down turn rate a lot - I guess my ideal of, say, a 5 vs. 5 game with regional commands would be just impossible.

Yes I remember IT!! Absolutely brilliant article!! It really cracked me up at the time and I wish I had kept a copy.

I don't think the article was in The General as I didn't read that magazine. I think it might have been in an issue of Moves magazine which was a SPI product IIRC.

Cheers,
Reg.

Yes, it is still around

Still called WWII Online, but they added the Battle Ground Europe as the idea is they may one day do North Africa or the Eastern Front (but this has been speculated for years).

They are about to have another large patch which makes alot more enhancements

I remember the article from the General as well.  As I recall it was told from the perspective of a person who was investigating this friends new game / hobby.  There was a small excerpt from the 'rules' and I think a discussion about arming a soldier with side arms (counters for pistols).

I am pretty sure it was actually the "Paratroop preparation Procedure" that involved getting the parachute, putting it on, then boarding the plane etc. ... but it was a long time ago [:)]

When GG's War in the East comes out you can play that with WitP AE and have 2/3's of the entire war to play. Would lend itself to a good team player PBEM game-so long as you find enough dedicated players-one team plays WitP AE and the other WitE and exchange game files.  I'm planning on getting it when it eventually comes out and playing a PBEM campaign game. I'm sure between the two I'll be quite occupied....

There was a boeard game called something Europe, can't remember it's exact name but it consisted of 9/10 standard maps and countless counters. I played one samll scenario using one map. I did lay out all the maps but had to move the the furniture to do so as the floor was the only thing big enough. I bought it on a whim and still have it stuck up in the loft.

You may be thinking of SPI's War In Europe which combined their two previous monster games into one. Played it with my friend Phillip when stationed in Colorado, well tried to-his dogs kept doing recons.[:D]

SPI did Desert War /North Africa years ago in the 70's,  a cornacopia of unplayability if ever there was one. Each separate plane was represented by a single separate cardboard counter - stacks were enormous & kept on falling over unless you used the separate A4-size squadron status pages for each err squadron. Then you had to keep track of each pilot assigned to each separate plane.
Each separate ground unit had it's own logistics page of A4 which you had to photocopy (there were over 2,000 units on the board).  First thing in the morning water supplies (a whole minefield) had to be distributed,  the Italians causing problems because they not only needed extra (for their pasta meals) but also were very incompetent at keeping/distributing/moving it...
Never ever got to play a single turn & sold it in disgust [:@]

I get all warm and fuzzy when I remember playing those old games on the floor (split knees and an aching back). Then I remember the really bad days; when I'd lose a ship-counter, and have to turn the house upside-down looking for it.

Now I sit in my nice soft chair with a laptop on my knee, so thats why you never hear me complaining about this game (much). Progress is a beautiful thing.
