Question for Dutch-speaking forum members
I'm looking for the Dutch translations of the following words:
- Panther
- Wolf
- Lynx
- Crocodile
- Wolverine
- Jackal
- Fox
- Leopard
Planning to use them as destroyer names in my mod.

RE: Question for Dutch-speaking forum members
Hey, Dutch is my first language, so here you go.
- Panther: Panter
- Wolf: Wolf
- Lynx: Lynx
- Crocodile: Krokodil
- Wolverine: Veelvraat (but in this case I imagine "Marter" is more appropriate, "Veelvraat" doesn't sound very tough)
- Jackal: Jakhals
- Fox: Vos
- Leopard: Luipaard
Other than the "Veelvraat" one they're all about as tough sounding names as you get in Dutch I suppose.
- Panther: Panter
- Wolf: Wolf
- Lynx: Lynx
- Crocodile: Krokodil
- Wolverine: Veelvraat (but in this case I imagine "Marter" is more appropriate, "Veelvraat" doesn't sound very tough)

RE: Question for Dutch-speaking forum members
" Veelvraat " has a very exotic sound to it for some reason [:)]

RE: Question for Dutch-speaking forum members
As far as I can tell, it means something like "eats a lot", which is appropriate for a wolverine, I suppose...[:D] Thanks, Krikke.

RE: Question for Dutch-speaking forum members
Interesting; a dutchman myself, I thought the 'veelvraat' got his name from, indeed, his tendency to devour other living beings. But apparently it hails from the Old-Norwegian 'fjellfross' meaning 'mountain (fjell) cat (fross). According to Dutch Wikipedia, that is. But I disagree with Krikke: 'Veelvraat' sounds VERY tough.[:)]
RE: Question for Dutch-speaking forum members
Looks vicious to me.

I think you're looking at his "kloten" or his "ballen"!? [;)]
Jaroen.
RE: Question for Dutch-speaking forum members
Yeah, "veelvraat" indeed means "eats a lot" or "glutton". It's the sorta thing I'd shout at my brother, not exactly the name I'd give to my ship. But then, I wouldn't put it past the Dutch to give silly names to their ships. Silly people they are.
RE: Question for Dutch-speaking forum members
You suggested "Marter" as an alternative. This to me sounds very close to the German "Marder", which means "badger", as far as I'm aware?

Wolverine is indeed Vielfraß respectively the dutch version of this word. Who ever knows this beast wouldn't call it not tough enough any more [;)]

Learned something new today. I always, ALWAYS thought Marder was a badger. Now I find it's one of these little ferret-like critters:

Wolverines are mean, petty beasts.

RE: Question for Dutch-speaking forum members
According to my quick Internet search, in German the badger is called a dachs. I suppose that makes sense, since that would make a dachshund a "badger hound", bred to go into badger warrens.
