Microsoft Security Essentials(works great at real time and finding dangerous files, get it here- http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Malwarebytes-Great at detecting malicious software(there is a version to buy, but the only benefit it offers is auto updates of database. You can surely do that manually, I do. Get it here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Avast-it works well, I agree with JudgeDredd on this one. Get it here: http://www.avast.com/

I use all three, they are not very resource hungry and do not degrade performance.

Also, never forget Windows Defender.

Microsoft has the habit of taking away users options. Like making decisions for the user instead of giving a choice. Most of their software is like that for me. Is MS Essentials really that good? [&:]

Avast is working great, but is very slow on scanning files in comparison to AVG. It sure has a lot of options though which I like.

I also am using Malwarebytes which I give credit to you for. Thank you. I was using RemoveIt! but had so many false positives every time I used it that I gave up on that. Malwarebytes seems like a good tool.

Do not get McAfee, I used to use it.  Too many issues with it and also McAfee decided to automatically renew my subscription without warning.  So I had to immediately contact their support and get them to refund me the money, exactly how much I get back will depend on the exchange rate at the time of initiating the refund.

McAfee is not even on the list of possibilities. Every PC I have bought has come with that worthless leech of garbage. To entirely remove it, it just about takes a reformat. It's amazing how that program hangs on. The opposite of user friendly too. It kind of reminds me of one particular US president, but I'm not saying who. [8D]

Kaspersky is the absolute best but it also the most expensive. You get 10-12 updates a day and it uses a minimum of resources. After a Trojan attack last fall I decided to spare no expense in computer protection.

I used ZoneAlarm Pro for a couple of years and had nothing but troubles on two machines with different systems. Never again. The problem is that it took at least a month until big troubles would arise. I would uninstall it. Everything fine. Then reinstall it and after a month the same problems. I went round and round like this for about two years. Finally I gave up and took it off for good.

Larry, I know that you ruled out Symantec but a while back MarkShot suggested that I use Norton Internet Security 2009 (and I got the free update to 2010) and I'm pretty happy. It has all you need, Firewall, Virus Protection/Scanner, Identity Safe Software, Email Scanner. It isn't too intrusive - in fact it is the slimmest Norton product yet, and 2009 was very well reviewed by several industry magazines.

You could go the free route, but you will end up with more intrusive software by the sheer number of programs you need to run concurrently. Mark linked me to an article that stated as much, and it was compelling to see how - to get the same protection as the very slim NIS 2010, you had to DL about 10-15 programs, most free but some with a small cost. You look at how you need to DL Avast, then Zonealarm just to get virus protection and a firewall - you already have more intrusion than NIS 2010.

Lockups that only turning the machines off would stop. They were sporadic which made it hard to trap. The only way I could attribute it to ZoneAlarm Pro was to uninstall it and go for four weeks or more to make sure. Every time I uninstalled it everything was fine for weeks, until I would do it all over again. [:@]

I tried everything possible to make it work. I did this for about two years. I got tired.

I have contemplated trying it one more time, but I just don't have the patience now. I also don't want to spend the money, only to find out weeks down the road that it's doing it again.

Good points. I understand and I have been thinking about this. I now have XP firewall (a joke), Avast, and Malwarebytes installed. Nothing really for spy cookies, or firewall.

Have you had any conflicts with games and Norton?

Also, is it easy to temporarily disable?

EDIT: I installed the 2009 Trial and when I opened my browser, it said the two components were NOT compatible with Firefox. I uninstalled the dang thing. I figured so much from Symantec.
