Is there a DISADVANTAGE to putting planes on max altitude during naval search?

Thanks,

Yes. The higher up you are, the further away is the horizon. which means in theory you can see a greater area. HOWEVER - you are also further away from the ground/sea, and therefore things on the surface are harder to see!

They have always talked about 6,000ft being the optimum altitude for search planes in WITP (presumably designed to reflect real life). Hope that helps.

Now a question for the Devs - in AE a lot of search planes are equipped with working radar. Are those best used at the same (6,000ft) altitude, or a different altitude?

Me too, I want to know. I find myself putting most planes at 6000 ft, some at 1000 ( why, I don't know ) and some ASW at 2000, and some ASW at 100. Why, I don't know, I am experimenting. [:)]

Swordfish definitely carried two types of radar, an anti-ASW one and also a surface one.  Dunno how much it was deployed in the Far East though (I speak from reading up on Atlantic operations).  However the Swordfish definitely operated fairly close to wave-level at all times

Not sure about the actual effect on search (being able to see objects below) from high altitudes, but it certainly affects periodic naval search attacks. Too low=high fatigue and brutal effects of flak. Too high=no attacks, possible effect on sighting of small TFs. As PP have stated, there's a happy medium about 5,000-6,000 ft.
