Disappearing Minefields

I have laid a lot of minefields in one of the games I am playing and I have noticed that in areas out of ports the minefields disappear after a few turns. I don't know if this is meant to happen or is trying to similate mines floating away with the tide. But if they were floating away with the tide they must end up somewhere, and if so, why dont I hit them in other areas?

Another point I only seem to be able to reload my minelayers in Truk, is this the case or is there something I am missing?

Mines will "disappear" unless they are layed in shallow water (hit your F2 key to display Shallows). Truk is the only place that you can reload mineships from as IJN, for the allies it is at N.

My understanding of the reason that the number of places you can run mine warfare operation from was that they didn't mines to become an unbalanced weapon. The US can only run mine laying ops from Noumea and Brisbane I think.

And yes depending on where you place them mine fields can have a very limited life. As to why you don't run into the odd runaway mine, probably way too hard to model accurately.
