Luzon

We sank one and at least heavily damaged another supply ship headed to Luzon. Nell's got one out to the East and Oscar's in fighter-bomber mode heavily damaged another in Manilla. Our major airstrikes this turn, went in against Manilla. We still have not thrown in our 4 reinforcing Sentai from Malaya but they are in the area preparing.

Burma
Oscar sweeps went in against Akyab, but no enemy planes came up. We see fighters on the ground but no one came up to greet us.

Summatra
We took out one unit and capture another town in Southern Summatra. We now own all of Southern Summatra and some units will start to head North into Centra Summtra. It will take some time to control the whole Island but we're making progress.

Java
No real change here. Our troops continue to unload and head towards the front.

Burma

We have four divisions in Burma now, though two of them are tied down being "garrisons".

Akyab, on the other side of a river, with no LOC to our rear, looks a long way off! And it seems to be piled high with Allied troops.

Wenchow

In Southern China, we are beseiging Wenchow - a tough city to take, since it generates lots of supply. We fought a fighter battle with the AVG last turn, so this turn we are sending in the Lily's to attack the airfield. The AVG does not come up today.

Java

Nik is not a big fan of Allied "uber PTs" - so thinking he sees some, he sends in his Zero PT boat killers (or "wavers at") but merely bags a small AMc.

China

Heavy combat at Wenchow (Southern China) - both sides took about 200 casualties. We knocked the forts down to level-1. Surprised he hadn't built the forts up higher. In a test game against Nik, I don't think I ever took this place by September 1942, but I think I have a chance in this game.

Java
5ID will complete unloading this turn and second half of 25 Army artillery will start unloading. IGID is on the way to the front to join 21ID, 25 Army HQ and other half of 25 Army artillery.

Luzon
48ID and 16ID advanced to Lingayen which will fall. Americans have pulled out. We bombed Manilla again this turn.

Burma
Allied bombers showed up over Central Burma - it will be a long time before we have enough infrastructure to support enough bases to hurt massed Allied bombing raids.

Kuriles
One of our PB "picket boats" performed its mission this turn and discovered a USN Battle force including 3BB as well as cruisers and destroyers heading in towards Paramushiro. This gives us warning to pull back the supply convoy unloading there. The crew's ancestors will welcome them - Banzai!

Redeployment
The lack of Allied Naval opposition around Java is giving Nik and I a chance to reorganize or fleet. I am sending him Kongo and Haruna, which I have had in the South China Sea since the start of the game. The fast BBs will work better with the carriers. In return I am getting Ise and Hyuga, which will work for me in the Gulf of Martaban.

Haiphong

Our experimental Tojo chutai shot down 6 Chinese bombers over the two day turn. The Chinese bombers got no hits on our shipping which is busy loading resources. Not sure why the Chinese came in with unescorted bombers again.

Wenchow

We sent in some heavy bomber support for our ground attack at Wenchow. On the 5th our planes flew and the ground troops did well. On the 6th our planes did not fly and our ground troops stalled out.

Nanyang

We beat up a big Chinese stack at Nanyang (again). Since this stack re-entered the hex and even attacked us again - they can't blame this one solely on the artillery - they came asking for it!
[:D]

Luzon
5 Sally Sentai, including 4 reinforcing from Malaya will enter the fray this turn.

Java
The 5ID and 2 of 4 reinforcing artillery units have unloaded at Batavia this turn. All attacking elements of the 25 Army (3 Divisions, 8 Artillery unts and the HQ) should be in the line at Bandoeng by the end of the third turn from now.

Burma
Hum, Forest had been telling me stories of "Hurricane Buzzsaws" - but in Burma this turn - our Oscars seem to have shot down 19 Hurricanes for the loss of one Oscar! [:)]

Here is a pic of one of our raids on Clark Field this turn - the defending fighters put in a rare appearance.

Dot Island North of Darwin

The Allies seem to have placed about 6 units (small I assume) on a small dot Island North of Darwin. For some reason, Nik decided to send a Marine Battalion to this dot Island place - and Wow! - what a hornet's nest. Nik bombarded with his 8 DDs and bombed with Baby KB, but the Allies rolled in with their B-17s and B-26s and the ground combat was indecisive, though we are heavily outnumbered. I'm advised pulling out, setting up and comming back in, but Nik is in charge in this sector, and I think he is going for "blood"! [:D]

Java
5ID and artillery moving towards Bandoeng from Batavia. IG looping around from the SW. 21 IMB at Tjitlap. 21 ID, 4 Mortar Bns and 25 Army HQ at Bandoeng. IJA has 4 Sally Sentai, 3 Oscar Chutai and 1 Babs Chutai at Batavia. 25 Army should be assembled and ready to attack within 2 turns.

Burma
No air action this turn

China
We attack again at Wenchow - stalemate still - both sides take heavy losses - though Chinese take more in terms of devices destroyed. Our fatigue and disruption are not too bad, so we will continue the battle. We have 1 Lily, 1 Ann Sentai supporting the ground troops, with 1 Nate and 1 Oscar Chutai providing fighter support. Two Babs units provide recon support.

Luzon
Our reinforced 14 Army has taken Iba and will now approach Clark from the West. In the mean time the 65th Brigade approaches from the Aparri side. Our aircraft bombed cabanatuan (East of Clark, NE of Manilla).

Why do all those groups seem to be flying at their planes max altitude ? Lower altitudes for the sweeps may get better results, the mnvr advantage is a lot bigger there for the oscars.

Because at that time that is where I was flying them...I moved them lower and the results approached 50-50...if I was sweeping. Problem was his Sweeps still came in high and would catch any CAP I had low...IMO the hurricane performance is tied directly to the twelve guns it carries...

There never seems to be a perfect altitude. Except I try to have my escorts fly just above the bombers. Now if I could only get them to coordinate their strikes. I have been pleased with the performance of the Hurricanes in Burma. They more than hold their own with Oscars and have been ok with Zeros except when vastly outnumbered. In one of my PBEM's, we are in August 42 and all but one of my Hurricane squadrons have shot down more planes than I have been lost. Of course, some of those victories have come against bombers. Treespider, this is slightly off topic, heck it is way off topic, but is Calhoun's still serving up great ribs? They used to have an all you can eat night on Thursday nights. I always timed my trips to Oak Ridge to be there on Thursdays.

Selaroe

A little dot island North of Darwin has become the scene of a minor attrition battle. There are no facilities at the dot island so most of the "firing" is being done by ships and planes. The unfortunate land troops, from both sides take the poundings.
