Attacking subs

Post by hbrsvl »

Hi-Believe this would pertain to any scenario.
Will(can)aircraft(B-18, SBD, B-26, etc.) attack enemy subs if they are set to "Naval attack" rather than "ASW"?
I'm in scen.9, mid 1/42 and it seems my aircraft set to ASW don't attack enemy subs.
Comments, please.
Thanks, Hugh Browne

You will get sub hits occasionally on ASW and naval search orders. I do not think that planes on naval attack will engage subs as they do surface task forces. Once their exp starts to rise you should find, if AE is like WitP, that naval search planes that spot subs will have a chance to attack, and therefore maybe hit, subs.

I did some tests on a Head to Head game. If you get a report that a certain class of sub was attacked, then the odds are pretty good no hit was actually made. If a specific name of a ship was reported hit, then you probably holed her. The ASW assigned units, as I recall in the test, tended to get more hits, but you have to limit their search arcs to get more planes searching per hex, and they were usually patrolling between 1,000 and 5,000 feet. That's what I saw in a limited test of Allied air ASW around Hawaii the first few weeks of the war, anyway.
