Regimental Scale
Regimental Scale
When the next patch comes out, which should be fairly soon, I'm thinking about designing one or more scenarios on a regimental scale, where the units represent entire regiments and the hex scale is 250 to 300 yards. In the 80's GDW released a series of what they called 120 games (Lobositz, Prague). I found these great fun to play and have decided to replicate one or more of these using Horse & Musket.
What I intend on doing is creating an order of battle where all regiments of two battlelions will consist of one unit. Depending on the overall strength of the regiment, those with three battlelions will will have the third bn incorporated into the regiment along with its accompanying two bns or segregated out and represented by four icons instead of eight. Cavalry regiments will be treated similarly, with the overly large ones (Bayreuth Drag's, Hussar Regs, etc.) divided in two (like they are now). I haven't decided what I'm going to do with grenadier bns. (comments/suggestions welcomed).
Currently, the battlefield and units are limited to 99 (99 hexes/99 units). There are plans to expand this, but probably not for a while. For this reason I'm doing the above.
Please let me know you thoughts. I used to work for attorneys, so I have a pretty thick skin.

RE: Regimental Scale
In my opinion bad idea. There is no need to use such big tactical units. What about small units like Saxon cavalry regiments? The basic and highest soldier level in those regiment were about 402 men per regiment. So you will use cavalry brigads as a single units? Freibatalions? In scale 250-300 yards battalions level game are still such good as in 150-200 yards.
I'm also waiting for expand battlefield, but is fortechnical reason doubtly. I will happy if it came true. It is neccessery for next scenarios

(1) I would have no problem brigading smaller units together. Although, by doing so I'll probably be ostracized by the Grognards.
(2) Are you saying that it is feasible to design a scenario keeping the units as battlelions but expanding the distance 250 - 300 yards?
I can understand that a 900 - 1,000 man battlelion would have a frontage of ~250 yards, but most battlelions of the period as the war progressed never exceeded 600 and the Prussian Grenadiers less than 500. However, I do value your opinion on this subject. You've certainly done more research on the subject than me.

RE: Regimental Scale
It isn't important in the game that frontage for battalion is 250 yards or only 200. This is only conventional assumption. For ex. I usualy use in scenario small units like Austrians grenadiers in Reichenberg scenario. There is only 200-220 men per unit which have in the game the same frontage as a full Prussian and Austrian line infantry battalions. Of course it is work, there is no problem with the gameplay. It is only suggestion.
How do you want explain one regiment frontage? about 300 yards or 400?.
And of course you must remember about intervals. Unit do not have to take all hex frontage. Soldiers was able to fire even 45' on each side of the front, or simply - crossed a little line.

RE: Regimental Scale
You point is well taken regarding unit frontages.
Anything more than 300 yards is too much. Besides which, 6 x hexes is almost exactly a mile, pretty easy for made design purposes. Also, 250 yards makes it 7 x hexes to the mile. if I were just doing battlelions I would stay within 250 yards - 300 for a bn level scenario is too much, in my opinion.

RE: Regimental Scale
Ok so let take another way. Did you play the Gross-Jagerndorf scenario on the previous version of the Horse and Musket?

RE: Regimental Scale
I tell you. It was standard scale for battle for this game app. 1:200 yards.
In Horse and Musket series developed by Shrapnel games won't written any scale. I played this scenario which have 44x44 hexes and have lots of fun.
When I measured terrain of the battle it came for 99x99 hexes about 250 meters per hex. The same terrain was previous measure by 44 hexes!
My point is even the scale was unrealistic the game are pretty good.

That's very interesting. It certainly give new food for thought. I'll have to re-think this some more and re-post.
RE: Regimental Scale
PH, I know that you've designed scenarios with 4 infantry in a line instead of eight. Can you give a point by point discription of how it's done? I've tried to do it from the way said once, but can't seem to get them lined up.

RE: Regimental Scale
Hm, I stil do not exactly known what do you meaned? Please tell which unit? DO you mean ex. "1/Grenadiers"?

RE: Regimental Scale
Yes. It was the 1/Grenadiers. You had for figures in the unit all straight a line.

RE: Regimental Scale
This second?
Ok.
You edit unit.
Go to "Graphic Setup"
Click Facing "South"
Click Formation "Line"
Clik on the "1" under "Link Icon Name"
Click "Up", "Left", "Right" or "Down" and looked how the unit on the picture below move.
You should do this with all troopers for every "Facing" and for choose "formation"
That is all I have learned allready.
