Game replay crash

Post by Knavey »

Still under patch one. When running the replay, the game crashes at the exact same spot.

After the air phase there is a sub attack vs. DD Gregory. The torpedo hits the DD, and then the crash to desktop occurs...sort of like I am on that sub since she sinks (I think).

This is a PBEM game and I had no problems with the data file and doing the turn.

I have not gotten the next replay back yet.

File is renamed from pws to txt to allow posting. Change extension back to run.

I did run it several times and it crashed in the same place. AFAIK, my opponent does not have the same problem with his replay.

Have you installed the 1084e hot fix? It is supposed to help some CTD.

Yup.

Current up to the latest patch.

This is actually the first CTD I have had.

I can't access the attachment.
You can zip up the pws and attach it in the thread.

Here it is zipped.

I was wrong about my opponent not experiencing issues...he is having CTDs 40% of all replays. This replay took him 5 tries to get past the DD in question so he could complete the turn. I will ask him to post issues in this thread.

I'm the opponent. Here's my experience with replays in three scenarios which, as the Japanese, you have to get through to get to the turn!

- I experience the crash to desktop on maybe 30% of replays. (Had one this morning on another sub attack -- DD Aaron Ward.)
- The crash usually occurs on the first combat event of the replay -- often a sub attack, but occasionally air-to-air combat.
- 95% of the time, crashes do *not* occur on the second replay. So, a little annoying, but not a show stopper.
- The DD Gregory crash described here was unusual because it happened late in the replay and kept happening 4 or 5 times. It stopped only after a complete reboot of my computer.

Given the last bullet, I suspect it may be related to my computer configuration -- a laptop with Win XP.

I tried the replay once and it crashed late on the DD Gregory attack. I have not had any crashes in AE up until that one.

I have tried it a few times without any CTD.

It is possible that it is stopping because it can't find a block of memory to hold an image - the ship images are loaded as required. But memory fragments are it gets accessed and returned to the memory pool.
This could explain why it happens sometimes and not others.

Interesting that you make the note on images...my replay studdered with some VERY MINOR pixelation right at the moment it had crashed the time before. It corrected itself and went on with the replay.

AMD Athlon 64x2 dual
Core Processeor 6000+
3.02 Ghz, 3.25 GB RAM

Is what My Computer shows. If you think more info on my system would help, I can burrow down and get more specific.

Thanks for looking into this.

Knavey, do you run the replay with any delays set to 0? When I run your replay with delays at zero, it crashes. If I set them to .5 second, it runs with no problems.

Mine are set with a 1 second time delay.

What makes this strange is it is the first time EVER I have had a CTD since AE was released...and the following turn had a CTD also.

Another possibility:
Try deleting the 001 file before running the Japanese turn that generates it.

This could be the rather odd case of the old save mucking up the new one.
This also occurred occasionally in stock, as it has in AE.

Tried running several times and I can not get it to crash either, however I am using the latest build. I'm thinking maybe a combination of game start up swithes and or driver issues so as a test try turning off/disabling sound, backup your current short cut and try experimenting with different switches or none at all. If AE was not causing problems before but is now then something changed, try reinstalling audio and video drivers and update DX.

RE: Game replay crash same issue diff game

Post by stldiver »

Exact same issue in my game vs Scott popped up again last night 3rd time. This time I was not able to get past the crash.
Always on torpedo attacks in past. In past I would deleted old file and create new and it would move past. Not this time.

I emailed Q-ball to see if he could run it and he tried with exact same issues, and he never had the problem before,
here is what he said

"It crashed for me, just as that RO-boat was tagging AMC Cornwallis; if that's the point it crashed for you, then it's not your computer. It probably isn't the install of AE, maybe you already tried to re-install the game.

I would post on the Tech Support and ask for help. If that doesn't work, I would re-install the game on both sides. If that doesn't work, I would wait for patch 2 and start over. That would be too bad, but at least you can both apply lessons learned.

I have never had a crash like that over and over on replay, not in AE or WITP. Strange!

Hope it works out!"

Could you run mine and check it out, if it does run the replay and turn file so I could continue the game would be helpful.

Once again this was run on two different machines, one never had seen the issue before.

Thanks if you can

Edit :) Got it working used comments above turned all sound/Fx off and set delays to zero and it raced past the problem. Thanks for info.

Tried running it on 1084e and still no crashes (forgot I had an old installation).

Here go the replay file.
