Ceylon: Raids by British bombers versus the Hiryu + Soryu TF that docked at Trincomalee coordinated badly and were chewed up piecemeal by the Zero CAP. A few torpedo planes got through but sadly missed the juicy targets. While we did not get lucky this time, at least this should serve as a warning to the IJN.
My retreating surface TF ran over I-162 on the way north and hopefully sent that boat to the repair yard. The British DDs seem a lot more proficient at ASW work than their US counter-parts. Too bad that there are only a few of them available.
Australia: Rockhampton and Bundaberg fell to the vile invaders.
Additionally the KB caught a cargo TF (fleeing north from Rockhampton) and sank most of it.
Sub warfare: I-7 sank the xAK City of Rayville near San Franciso. Despite the presence of many patrol planes and ASW craft, this area remains the best hunting ground for the I-boats.
Intel: Akagi was removed from the sunk ship list and suddenly coastwatchers all over the Solomons start to think they've spotted her. So far the carrier was "seen" in Shortlands, Tulagi, PM and Lae. [:)]

Jan. 25th - 27th, 1942:
Ceylon: IJA troopers are moving out of Trincomalee in multiple directions while the base is swarming with Zeroes and Betties. Meanwhile the British soldiers are frantically digging in at Colombo.
To pass the time Soryu + Hiryu also raided Madras and sunk several small xAPs and HDMLs in the harbor.
Malaya: The Japanese have taken the empty Johore Bahru and are moving down more troops. Mersing and Kutuan are still in allied hands and 2 1/3 brigades are cut off behind enemy lines. The rest of the troops eagerly (?) await the river crossing. I still hope to last longer here than historically though.
PI: A deliberate attack at Clark Field failed and didn't touch the two forts. I guess it is back to bombardments and daily air attacks again for a while.
Also the first operations outside of Luzon have begun. SNLF paratroopers took Surigao and Davao (both undefended) while a drop into Cebu met a PI division and failed.
DEI: On Borneo the IJA's overland advance continues. An infantry battalion seized Jesselton and is now moving onto Kudat. 3 more units have been spotted at Pontianak and will likely attack soon.
On Java the advance continues to be slow (but removing 2 IDs for the assault on Ceylon tends to do that) and the IJA controls now a line from Semarang to Tjilitjap. The first KNIL units are starting to come down from their mountain resort and while their remaining combat value is minimal maybe they can create some mischief behind enemy lines.
At least even with the DEI falling early there are quite few allied (mostly CW) units that can use the advanced dutch aircraft types that will soon become available. The Hurricanes, PBYs, B25Cs and DB-7Bs won't go to waste even though I am still looking for a squadron that can use the dutch Warhawks. It is also too bad that the Lodestar squadron can't upgrade to anything else anymore. Once the planes have been destroyed, it becomes useless which makes the decision whether to buy it out and save it a lot more difficult.
China: Two back-to-back attacks at Changsha failed though the thrice accursed combat engineers took down a fort level each (from 5 to 3). Units from Vietnam have also invaded the south and are currently held up at Nanning. The first attack there also failed though again forts were reduced by a level. While I don't mind seeing Southern Area Army units diverted, this will also stretch my meager resources even further.
Burma: The Burma Area Army has taken Meiktila and is moving onto Mandalay.

Sub Warfare: Fresh out of the repair yard O19 valiantly attacks CV Hiryu at Trincomalee - and misses. The resulting counterattack heavily damaged the dutch boat. Hopefully it will survive the trip back. I have to admit I have a certain fondness for the 2 dutch minelaying boats.
Meanwhile S-36 continues to impress me and torpedoes xAK Sinsyu near Hengchun. xAK Hakodate Maru also gathered a lot of attention. 12 torpedoes were fired at the vessel by 3 different subs but only 1 caused damage (1 more was a dud).
Ceylon: Hiryu and Soryu trashed Madras' harbor a bit more. As there are no valuable targets there, any activity that gets elite naval aviators killed is a good thing in my book.
A raid by 3 British MTBs into Trincomalee's port did not go quite as planned. They met several escorts including CL Kashii and 2 boats were quickly destroyed. The surviving boat did claim a torpedo hit on the CL though which should put it out of action for a while.
Australia: A single smallish unit was landed at Cairns. While I am not strong there I wonder if it is big enough to take the place.
Also the fleeing xAK Centaur was dispatched by Vals. KB is still in the area.
DEI: Pontianak and Semarang fell into the hands of the evil invaders.
PI: A port attack on Bataan revealed the presence of AS Holland there to my opponent when a bomb hit the ship. It seems the happy times for the Silent Service here are over.
More paratroopers seized Tacloban.
On Cebu the company-sized enemy detachment was wiped out by the defenders though.
China: Another shock attack at Changsha also fails and the IJA is back to bombardments now. I have no qualms about spending the lives of hundreds of thousands Chinese peasants here to try and hold the city. I do wonder how Japan's supply situation is like in China.
On the bright side the 115th IJA Infantry Regiment entered Wenchow only to be kicked out again by the 100th Corps.

Australia: The unit at Cairns withdrew again. It seems that that the unit count at Rockhampton/Bundaberg area is increasing though.
PI: A lot of Japanese planes returned to Bataan today and further damaged the port. Its days as a forward sub base are definitely over.
Also another paratrooper company was dropped at Roxas, overrunning the empty base. It seems that the 1st and 3rd Yokosuka Bns are committed to these mopping up operations.
China: Also here is a reason why river crossings can be bad for your health.

A new month begins and it starts of badly...
CV Saratoga: The I-boats continue to terrorize the peaceful allied sailors while ASW efforts are completely ineffective so far. Having multiple squadrons on naval search and ASW, a screen of 10+ DDs in the TF and a seperate ASW TF in the same hex doesn't help either as poor Saratoga found out off Sydney. 3 torpedo hits (a fourth was a dud) from I-160 heavily damage the carrier and I am not sure I can save her as fire levels are extreme. Even if the CV survives, it will be out of the war for a long time - I guess until '43 at least. Sydney's port is but a hex away but Sara is too big for the drydock which doesn't help either. The closest repair facilities would be Cape Town or Pearl which both are a long way off.... [:(]
Meanwhile AE Lassen is also sunk off the West Coast.
On the bright side KXI hits TK Kyokuyo Maru with a torpedo near Batavia.

Tony executed an amphibious landing at Koggala which pushed the defenders (a weak base force detachment) out easily. Colombo is now the last allied base on the island and Japanese troops are now from both sides.
Vildebeests and subs have been working the area and damaged several transports.
At least India itself should be pretty secure by now. The biggest problem here now is lack of (trained) naval search. Hiryu + Soryu slipped through the net again and whacked a transport convoy at Mangalore. Thankfully all that was lost is some motorized support which the allies have plenty of.
Madras received daily attention by Betties on port attack which slowly turn the xAP Van Imhoff into a wreck.

Not much action here. The allies are withdrawing in good order while the country is taken over by the IJA. At least one IJA unit is making its way to Akyab over the trails though. I need to see how strong this push is before deciding on whether fighting for it is feasible.
In the bottom right corner you can see the attack on Nanning which is a stalemate for now. Since the troops sent there are part of the Southern Area Army that's OK.

Also there is not much progress here. On Sumatra 2 units have taken the base SW of Palembang but I think they'll need reinforcements to take the base itself.
On Java the number of cut-off units is steadily reduced though a combination of ground and air attacks. Learning that ground units can now be completely destroyed through air power alone is something that I'll have to keep in mind.

China:
Here the fighting is concentrated around Loyang and Changsha where bombardment attacks do their worst. The enemy is at least not yet strong enough (or the Chinese not weakened enough) to take these bases.
A number of units are also advancing on Pingsiang south of Changsha.

Australia:
This is where most of the action of the last few days happened.
On the ground things did not work out very well. An SNLF company took Cooktown, a new infantry regiment has landed at Rockhampton and a probe towards Maryborough was easily pushed back.
This last attack did raise my blood pressure considerably, as the base was wooden terrain and the IJA units suffered from air attacks during the day while the Aussies didn't.

Not that both fatigue and disruption were low single digit values before the attack but doesn't seem to matter at all.
It seems building a maginot line at Brisbane is the only option then.

I am pretty sure that thanks to FOW are couple of ships have been misidentified and could have been displayed twice under a different name. Still, not too bad.
A land based strike from Saratoga's airgroup plus additional P-40 escort tried to attack KB - which had been rushing back to this area - but was wiped out thoroughly. 50 Zeroes and 15 Claudes shot down 54 allied planes in exchange for 2 Zeroes. [:(]
A pitiful 8 SBDs got through but missed CVL Zuiho and BB Hiei (and got killed on the return flight).
Now KB is back though to the south of my CVs (it seems that it went to Noumea to refuel). You can see its position in the picture above 2 hexes east of Maryborough. Kaga, Sho und Zui have been identified plus 3-5 smaller flight decks and a couple of BBs. The allied carriers are not displayed on the map but can be found to the northeast.
Allied command has many options now. Head west to whack the amphib landing at Rockhampton and accept a CV battle a day later? Available sorties might become a problem then. Head south directly to engage? The odds aren't too bad for an early war engagement and the CVEs/CVLs can't take much punishment. Or should the CVs try to evade for now and head for (hopefully) safer waters? Basically quitting while being ahead.
These question plagued me for most of this turn and I changed the destination for my carriers a LOT. I am still not sure I made the right choice but the next update will hopefully bring the answer.
Saratoga watch:
I am pleasantly surprised here. 75 fires did not do so much damage as feared and were quickly put out in port. It seems that having relatively low system damage is a must if you want to have a chance to survive such attacks. In my AI games any BB caught at Pear with such fires was surely doomed.
Still, she is looking at several months in drydock before she can rejoin the fleet.

Their escorts also damaged 4 subs in this timeframe. USN ASW efforts only managed to get the two DDs mentioned above sunk.
At least the allied subs also scored. xAK Sinsyu Maru, xAK Yahiko Maru and xAP Hakozaki Maru should either be spending the next few months in a repair yard or having their crews meeting their ancestors.

India: Poor xAP Van Imhoff is finally sunk in port at Madras though the 1st/AVG made sure that the crew will have some company.
Hiryu + Soryu also struck Mangalore but didn't hit anything important in port. A few dispersed counterstrikes failed to get past the fighters. So far I haven't had much luck with getting leakers through a Zero CAP.
Australia: KB has seemingly given up the chase and retired to Rockhampton. There plucky SS KXVI was forced to surface by the escorts and sunk by gunfire. RIP.
On the ground IJA troops have taken Rockhampton and 2 more units came ahore at Bowen. So far the commitment seems to be 2 reinforced divs.
Sub Warfare: S-37 snuck into Lingayen and scored a hit each on xAK Azumasan Maru and xAP Kokuryu Maru. KVII also got xAK Kinryu Maru out of Batavia.
China: It seems that the number of attacking units at Changsha will soon be increased to 50. So far 6000+ AV of IJA troops are on the attack and I do wonder if all of the rear area bases are properly garrisoned or if they were stripped.
Besides, daily 100+ bomber raids make any movement in the open very dangerous. Who needs artillery when a big bomber strike causes 1000+ casualties per day?
Under current conditions I fully expect China to be overrun before '43. Let's see if the patch will help...

Try sweeping with Hurricanes or P-38s at 30,000 ft. Works best if you have at least as many of your planes as they have on CAP at the start of combat.Hiryu + Soryu also struck Mangalore but didn't hit anything important in port. It would be nice but unfortunately you cannot target TFs with sweeps. At least this is something that in the later years that will also protect my carriers. Also P-38 are in very short supply right now. 
Besides, I don't terribly mind it when elite pilots impale themselves on land-based AA guns when only low value targets are at risk.

RE: Carrier Raids
Feb. 9th - 11th, 1942:
Australia: Bowen fell. Of the bases along the coast north of Brisbane only Cairns needs to be picked up.
At least I did get to enjoy a rare victory on the ground when the Bandasan SNLF ran into the 1st Aussie Division. That SNLF won't be bothering anybody anytime soon.
Sub Warfare: S-37 finishes its patrol with sinking AO Shiretoko at Lingayen. 3 torpedo hits doomed the 8000 capacity vessel immediately. 3 salvos = 3 hit ships
I wish all my subs were so efficient. [:D]
Having said that, I absolutely cannot complain about this part of the war so far. I would say that at least 50% of all vessels sunk so far did so because of a submarine attack.
Just for fun I've also set a couple of Do-24K-1s on naval attack and despite many misses attacks they did manage to hit xAKL Muko Maru and the (empty) TK San Ramon Maru. A B-17E also managed to plant a bomb into xAK Myoko Maru in Bundaberg harbor.
China: Here the IJA attacked at Loyang and Changsha. The attempt at Loyang was beaten back though at Changsha the enemy fared better. Their first attack yielded a 1:1 while one day later they (fortunately) failed. Still, it doesn't look good there.
Here is a list of what the CEA has deployed on the frontline:
Changsha: 5125 AV
Loyang: 2680 AV
Pingsiang: 750 AV (1 unit is still marching)
Nanning: ~500 AV (with 3 more units on the way)
There are also two big stacks at Chengchow (16 units) and Hankow (18 units) plus whatever is left behind to garrison the rear area bases.
The Chinese army is pretty hard pressed to match that, not even considering the supply situation and the fact that the IJAAF will hurt badly anything that moves in the open. I also hope that the devs will increase the level of devices the Chinese army gets in the next patch. A single attack wipes out more Chinese than can be replaced in a whole month.
Sigh, I shudder to think what will happen once the AVG withdraws.
