Can soneone please give me the idiots guide to this because whatever I do and whatever orders I set my TF's never seem to react. For example, i have my subs on react range of 2. Enemy TF's seem to pass over, or less than two hexes from the sub and they do not move to engage. Likewise SCTF's seem not to react either. The only TF's I seem to manage well are my CV's which I always have at react 0

They have to actually detect the enemy to react, you know.

That is not helpful! Obviously he knows that an enemy TF passes within a hex or two, then they are detected. Correct! I'd assume that the TF was detected by a search plane, obviously there is no use in relying on the sub to actually detect and react, it can only do it from within its own hex, except for japanese float plane eqipped subs.

I'm having similiar problems as the OP, I can get ASW to react but, I can't get subs to react at all. Even with aggressive commanders?

Odd , I had an american sub chase a japanese convoy all along the South coast of Japan .. was great fun watching "name" attacks yet again ! untill he ran out of torps and headed home. also had quite a lot of subs move and intercept in the DEI (while i still had search planes in Java) . not re-sent in the subs since as a lot need dents hammered out of them 1st [;)].

So in response to the OP, I can only suggest that each sub 'might' get shared detection on a target convoy and move to attack (maybe based on DL) , but with my deep penetration sub they can and do latch onto convoys and follow (i assume only if the convoy is slower than the sub). No idea of sub commanders agression off the top of my head, but i did sack all the hydrophobic ones.

SCTF's afaik will (and do) intercept from a friendly hex to a friendly base if the enemy turn up there(and its in reaction range and TF has the speed to get there). I have yet too see a mid ocean intercept reaction though (if they actually happen (i kind of hope they dont as there are a bit too many night surface mid ocean engagemenst as it is)

Good luck with your game anyway Cantona
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

i have a lot of sub reacting: but there is no message of this as for Surface TF or CV TF.

i have same Surface TF reacting (with message) but i think it depend also on attitude against enemy assets

what to date i never see to react is ASW TF when a sub is spotted by air

No expert here.....actually just the opposite. But on the last turn in my campaign game, I sent a sub squadron out (max react 5 for each sub). A few Jap convoys sailed within a few hexes of them, and my boys flat tore 'em up. Don't remember exactly, but I think 3 or 4 subs attacked. Sometimes, however, a convoy will be in the same hex with one of my subs, and nothing at all happens. It looks to me like detection may depend on a number of things.....none of which I really understand yet. [:)] Seems to be a combination of detection and chance ?

Funny, I also have had a lot of combat with surface task forces......but my CV's haven't yet attacked anything. Just the opposite of your experiences.
Looks to me like being in the same hex doesn't automatically cause detection. I think that adds to the game, but that's just me.

@Terminus well i take it as a minimum that you need to react to soemthing you can see!

@1275 Bring it on. Yamato, Mushahi et al. Lunga will fall before they get there!
