Hi all,
All-women combat helicopter crew

By BBC

Image

The RAF is to send its first all-woman combat helicopter crew into action in Helmand province in Afghanistan.

The four women will fly missions taking troops and supplies to the frontline in the battle with Taliban.

They are Flt Lt Michelle Goodman, 32, from Bristol and co-pilot, Flt Lt Joanna Watkinson, 28, from Reading.

The rest of the crew are Loadmaster Sgt Stephanie Cole, 24, from Wiltshire and Loadmaster Sgt Wendy Donald, 31, from Liverpool.

It depends a lot on the trade. There are plenty in admin roles and on the medical side of things, particularly in admin there aren't that many blokes. There are less girlies who are involved with the aircraft side of things. Aircrew-wise I can only really comment on the transport squadrons where I've worked and say that I haven't seen many female pilots (2 iirc) and none in the flight engineer or navigators, things might be different in the glamourous world of fast jets. Female techies are becoming more common although they're still in the minority, they seem to be more common in the avionics based trades rather than the mechanical side of things.

Hi all,

BTW, lots of discussion about current UK RN in this thread (last pages starting with page 5)... even talk about future RN CVs...

What were the Brits thinking?
