Staying the course with this game

Post by blastpop »

I had purchased WitP a couple years back, played a bit- kind of liked it, but other issues kept me from playing it. Now I find the Admirals edition is out. I find it hard to justifying the purchase of the Admirals ed.

Are folks continuing to play this game and starting new games? Maybe everyone has dropped this one in favor of the new edition?

I think I might purchase the new edition at some point, after getting some more play in with this game.

Thoughts and course of action suggestions?

I did something similar blastpop, I basically went ahead and bought WiTP:AE but just recently before AE came out started a fresh campaign in WITP, its only 1/4/43 in game and anything I can learn from WITP will only benefit me in AE. Also my biggest concern was bugs in AE, so far im glad I didn't quit my campaign to jump over right away. Until this campaign ends, I doubt I will probably switch over before hand, secondly I have not even touched the Japanese in WITP yet and I've been playing for a year now. So I will probably jump to a WITP Japanese campaign then probably make a switch.

We're still playing WITP, although just ran into what I think is the pilot bug at 27,500 pilots. Provided we can roll back some turns and keep this bug from happening, we'll finish this game out.

I do plan to start an AE game also, hopefully before the end of the year.

There are a number of active AARs going on, but for the most part there was a mass exodus.  I think most people wanted more and AE certainly looks to have provided it.  I still enjoying playing WITP and have no immediate plans for AE other than tinkering with it as long as my 2 PBEMs are ongoing.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

As with others, I am happily engaged in a PBEM.

The pilot bug is scary... it could ruin a fine capmpaign.  So, I am hopeful the new WITP patch will help with that.

I have AE, and I look forward to many hours of gaming with AE.  However, I recognize some players might not want the full scope offered by AE.  WITP might be just the ticket for them.

I wouldn't count on the patch to help with Pilot Bug. I think it requires to much of an overhaul and even if they put the fix in the patch, it would require a restart.

No, they can fix it without a restart... they have on individual games in the past, but i don't know if they will do it since they came out with AE... you could try asking, though.

We're continuing our game but I don't think I would ever start another one unless it was one of the esoteric mods like WiTM or WiR.

I am happy to see that there is still some interest in the game.

Any suggestions as to what scenario to start off with after the tutorial?

Thanks!

Hi Blastpop.
First, about your original question: yes there are still people playing "old" Witp, having not explore all the aspect of the game and enjoying it;
About wich scenario: most player seem to try the Guadalcanal Scenario.
Or you coud give a try to the Full Campaign against AI to have a look on the full scale game, and in a few turns (50 turns ? 200 ?) launch yourself in a PBEM.
Don't hesitate, if you look for a PBEM partner, to ask for newbee or semi-experienced player if you are affraid to face a grognar, i think there are player looking for opponant of their level.
And good luck to you.

I would suggest jumping into a full campaign game against the AI, you'd learn much more and few mistakes won't ruin the game like a short scenario like Guadalcanal.

I agree, but there is a way to make sure the pilot bug doesn't hit and that is for both players to manage the pilot numbers in their respective units. Don't horde pilots in units and keep an eye in Tracker for the numbers. Having a general slaughter once you're close can help ... 30K total IIRC.

Not that it has anything to do with the pilot bug, but Nemo and I just hit 25K each (50K total) plane loses and we're in May '43 ...

We hit 27,500 and that caused the pilot bug, so I'm not so sure 30,000 is a safe limit.

My two cents : I really liked WiTP. I switched to AE, and must say that I like it even more. But fun is fun, and if AE had never come out I would be still happily playing the original.

But if you like WiTP, I really do think you should give AE a try one of these days.

I have PacWar. WitP and WitP:AE.
I'm playing Grand Campaign WitP:AE as Japan vs. AI.
I kinda stopped playing the GC (April 42) and only play Guadalcanal PBEM.
I guess I just can't stand all the micromanagement.

I have started paying PacWar.  For me the level of detail is just fine. But it's an old game and it's not as entertaining to play as WitP or AE.

My question is: Is there any merit with playing WitP instead of AE?

Is there less detail and micromanagement?  My impression is that the level of detail of both games are quite similar.  AE just has better execution but also more rules to remember (e.g. port restrictions, etc.).  So will I just have to persevere and keep playing my AE campaign (while playing PacWar on the side)?

Basically WITP is half the micromanagement as AE, however there still is a micromanagement in the game, missing a few turns might not kill ya, since the AI pretty much useless in the game.

That's the point. I'm lured by the fact that the level of micromanagement is a bit less. But of course it's still "micromanagement hell".

I'm actually impressed with AE's AI as it is aggressive (with a little cheating of course).
And it poses as a decent challenge. I haven't gotten deep into WitP to compare with AE. But so far, I like AE's cheating AI. I just wished AE would have more smaller scenarios (like WitP) and have less details to bother with (e.g. search arcs, resupply conditions, etc.).

But I guess its not worth investing the time in WitP when I already have a game of AE going.

Bilbow and I are hitting the pilot bug in 06-44 in CHS 156. We're dealing with it, but if it becomes to FUBAR'd, we' agreed to a mutual armistance (altho my B-29s are just now appearing over Japan in numbers, and I'll really miss getting to vaporize Tokyo if we call it early).

A recommendation for learing the the grand campaign : Start a grand campaign as the Allies vs. the AI, and set everything to computer control, except the SE Asia zone. The Brits will have some air, land, and sea assests to that you can learn to manage, without overwhelming your brain. Don't get frustrated because the rest of the war is going badly for the the US and Dutch allies under AI control. You don't care, it's a learing expereince anyway. But playing just SE Asia can get your feet wet learing each of land-air-sea, without driving you crazy.

Bob Trapasso and I are still playing a WITP CHS game. My partner is Fabertong while his is Speedy.
For what we are about to receive, may we be truly thankful.
