Game ignores elevations & trees

Based on Slitherine’s popular tabletop wargaming system by the same name, Field of Glory now comes to the PC in a faithful adaptation of this acclaimed miniatures wargame! Without the calculations and measurements required for a tabletop game of Field of Glory, the PC version accurately represents Ancient and Medieval combat where you make the important and fun decisions on the battlefield. This forum also supports the Rise of Rome, Storm of Arrows and Immortal Fire expansions to Field of Glory.

Game ignores elevations & trees

Post by LarryP »

In the scenarios I have created and then played all the way through, units entirely ignore elevations and shoot arrows right through level 2 hills. That kind of ruins the concept of using hills for strategy of any kind.

Also using the scenario creator and planting trees, my units shoot right through them. What good are they other than for cosmetics? Now it shows the same percentage of hit, but it may lower the impact some, I don't know. I was kind of let down that I can't plant trees or use elevations to deter things.

That's why I'm giving up on PC games from here on out. I'm done. Bye.

Hills do effect shooting but if you're within X of the crest you can see over.

Trees dont block shooting but do reduce its effect. It sounds like you just misunderstood the system?

If you don't like it thats no problem, but you seem to be looking for a reason to chuck it away :)

I am right up against the level two hill and my archers shoot right across like it's not there. So the definition of "X" must be different for me.

I wondered if trees did reduce the effect. Now I know.

I'm giving up on buying anymore new PC games. I'm not looking for any reason to "chuck it away." I have had more fun with this game than most.

After further testing (playing actually) shooting over a level two elevation, my archer is right against one side, the defender is up against the other side. My archer shoots right across the middle, and this seems like it should not be allowed as the hill would be too high. Anyways, after shooting across the center, across the sides, and to the edges of this hill, the outcome does seem like the damage is less when the hill is under the shot. So that part seems right.

The reason this bothered me is I wanted to design scenarios where elevations could be used for shelter as well as an advantage point to shoot down onto the enemy. Kind of like "king of the hill." I also had noticed when first playing this game, that the AI chose to run up onto elevations when available, and shoot down onto my troops. So I thought there was an advantage to this. Maybe the only advantage is that the impact of their attack is higher when shooting from an elevation? [&:]
