every officer left the pbem game

After I had the "fatal error", unload and download process, the next thing that happened was:

I opened an existing pbem game, played the turn, saved it after some movement.

When I attempted to reload that save:
1. All officers on the map now showed as engineer colonels
their former CR remained
names disappeared
qualities disappeared (now question marks)
all troops assigned to them were unceremoniously dumped into a pool in the region
on the politicial screen F11 no officers showed on the screen where you check you AC and TC, PPs, draft, raiders, etc.
on the officer screen F5, no officers appeared at all
on the officer viewer probability screen F7 no officer names appeared at all

same situation with any of the former pbem game saves, even saves that we moved past and played subsequent turns with no problem. no we have the problem.

when i did a test with ftf settings and saved, no problem. game came back with officers in attendance.

anybody have any ideas
