Vote for: Beauty and the Battleship
Every general knows that soldiers like guns and pin-ups, but, alas, as this is a family-oriented forum we can forget the pin-ups part. So, in order to increase the enthusiasm of the brave fighters diligently assaulting Patch 2, I propose we make a list of the sexiest ships in WW2 (which, considering the bunch here, might be just as exciting for some... oh-oh... [:D] )
Cast your vote:
(a) Prettiest battleship
(b) Sexiest cruiser
(c) Hottest destroyer
(d) Most curvalicious aircraft carrier
(e) Bodacious-est what else you want
Cheers
[:D]
RE: Vote for: Beauty and the Battleship
My takes:
(a) Richelieu-class
(b) Tone-class
(c) None... all these darn destroyers look the same to me
(d) Akagi... love for the big girls, yay
(e) Erebus class monitors... these guys are so odd and creepy that they look pretty
Cheers

BB: Yamato, what a shock, my sig pretty much made me stick to my guns.
CA: Takao, I love that tower they put on it.
CL: HMS Belfast, just nice and clean looking etc.
DD: That Italian built DD that was delivered to the Soviets without a main battery was pretty sleek looking...even better with guns.
CV: Taiho was pretty nice looking...too bad there weren't more (and better) shots of her.
Whatever: Charleston class was always kinda neat looking in a way.

Yamato, IMO the best looking Battleship.

Actually, after I posted I was thinking... there must be something Freudian about why I find Nelson, Richelieu and Tone... errr... "interesting"... [:D]

BB North Carolina Class (any ship you have spent the night on is a runaway favorite)
CA Tone class is a beast of a cruiser
CL Brokyln Love the boxy A@s with the stern hanger
DD La Fantanique destroyer that has at all
CV Akagi pre-modernication with triple flight decks
my wiil card is any IJN ship with the huge Pagoda Tower masts. They all look so top heavy and fragile to me.
Just my 2 cents worth

You got a good one there - Alaska is definitely a beautiful design. Very well balanced, with nice, flowing lines.

Could have been an easy winner if not for the decision to mount her aircraft amidships (creates an ugly "break" in the superstructure) and that strange looking AAA mounting platform on the bow (looks like a bloody afterthought).

Yeah, and I would vote for her if I could make my mind on what Alaska is... it's not a cruiser, nor a battleship, nor a battlecruiser or an armored cruiser, neither a large light cruiser, nor a pocket battleship. The only definition I can give for the Alaska class is that they are a Scharnhorst... or in technical terms, a pocketbattlecruisership [:D]

CA: Baltimore class. Another class with balance that just looks right.

I cannot do this without splitting between Royal Navy and Others. So:
Royal Navy
(a) HMS Hood - quite. simply. beautiful
(b) HMS Penelope - love the name, love the war record - the escape from Malta.....[&o] - HMS Coventry comes a close second [&o] - ancient old tub, re-fitted as an AA cruiser
(c) HMS Onslow - a bunch of small escort destroyers beats two German cruisers - oh yeah baby [&o] - HMS Petard comes a close second - any ship that sinks a Japanese, Italian and a German submarine all in the same war is the business.
(d) HMS Illustrious - no one could accuse them of being the most effective carriers - look at the aircraft they couldn`t carry - but boy could they soak up punishment, take-it and come back for more - and they looked the part. I love the comment by one US officer who said something like - when a US carrier is hit by a bomb its six months in the dockyard - when a British carrier gets hit by a bomb its "get out the brooms" - priceless.
(e) HMS Warspite - What a girl! An intoxicating mix of new (superstructure) old (hull). Well proportioned - In Fishbed terms; Nice big chest and nice big butt. Great personality - and very interesting down the pub too - lots of good stories to tell. I think I`m in love [X(]
Others
(a) Yamato - she`s just so damn big, and powerful, and looks so mean
(b) Prinz Eugen - I think - I am studying the US cruisers at the moment and I suspect one of these will ultimately take the prize.
(c) Mogador or Le Fantastique - very nice - in a destroyer kind of way!
(d) USS Yorktown. [&o] Our yankee friends sure as hell knew how to build an aircraft carrier. Good-looking, great offensive and defensive capability - the Yorktowns were the business. I chose Yorktown over the more obvious Enterprise because of her never-say-die performance at Coral Sea and Midway, until sadly, after four bombs and two torpedoes, a Japanese submarine succeeded where the Japanese naval air arm couldn`t.
(e) Scharnhorst (with swept funnel). beautiful yet purposeful - just a shame about those rubbish 11-inchers.

Those 11-inchers were anything but rubbish, amazing performance from such a small caliber.

RE: Vote for: Beauty and the Battleship
BB - Nagato. Very nice and balanced design with just enough superstructure not to overdo it like Fuso.
CA - Wichita. Baltimore is a close second, but for some reason I've always thought Wichita looked better.
CL - Cleveland. This was a tough call, as personally I think a lot of the CLs look pretty unwieldy.
DD - Shimakaze.
CV - Lexington.

They were exactly what they said they were..., large, post-treaty, heavy cruisers, designed to easily defeat the big (read treaty-breaking) Japanese CA's. Same as the Strasbourg's were the French answer to the German
pocket battleships.
