RE: Witch game to buy
I may be bias, soooo
buy this one, and wait a another year for WitP:AE to get patched to where everybody is not complaining so much
joking aside
I would say it would depend on what your interests are
I think this one is a more detail game on the air war in the ETO, while WitP:AE, is a very good detailed game about the whole war in the PTO (so, here you got the Air War, in WitP:AE, you got the Airwar, the Seawar, the Subwar, the Landwar, the supplywar, while in very detailed levels, but not as detailed as ours)
(I not been able to get AE yet, but I played UV and WitP alot and loved both of them, if you are a HARD core gamer, I think you would like either of them)

BOO HISS [;)].. complining ? its a genteel dicussion between level headed individuals who do not allow emotion and knee-jerc reactions to get in the way of positive feedback [:D]<is there an emoticon for lying my head off)
seriously though Both games are very good and playable right now. Patch 2 for AEdition should make a lot of differance (still to be reliably tested mind you) but thats only the land war. the naval and air aspects are great and in the forefront anyway.
I loved BTR and eagle day from the originals and while i dont have this product (yet) my brother loves it.
to answer Jakerson ,, if you can offord to treat youtself , get both. If not then choose which game more interestes you . pacific conflict or European theatre ? You will not be disapointed with either.
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit

RE: Witch game to buy
I propably have to get both at some point. The right question is witch one I buy first? [:'(]
RE: Witch game to buy
How about reading AAR's in order to make a decision? Those should give a good impression about what to expect from the according game and if you like Grigsby design, you can't go wrong with either.
RE: Witch game to buy
Also depends on your attention span and tolerance for details.
I have since stopped playing WitP: AE grand campaing (only paying a PBEM game of Guadalcanal). But still play EDBTR once in a while because of better instant gratification.
I guess I just can't stand grand gampaigns with too much details.
You are right. Actually I'm playing Gary Grigsby's Carrier Strike (SSI) again. I find it better than WitP:AE because of smaller scope and more details carrier ops. I also find it better than Carriers at War because it has a campaign.
I'm also looking at Gary Grigsby's Pacific War (free from Matrix) to play a "simpler" grand campaign.

I'm in the same boat as the other poster.
Don't know which game to buy.
Is this new offering significantly different from the original game(s)?

again, I am bias, so would say to look at some of the AARs and look at the screen shots and details of the AAR to get a better idea

What do YOU calll significant? I only play Allied... now, you can plan your raid days as real raids without needing tricks to keep your losses from being astronomical. Good planning pays off, and bad ... bad luck too... will hurt you badly. I've been playing BTR since the first day it showed up on the shelf in the game store and it finally is actually playable without needing to be a fanatic to do so.
It is basically the same game but it finally works correctly. But, as before, if you don't enjoy a game that will last for months in real time then, well...

Hi, Jakerson -
Welcome aboard. I have both games, here are some thoughts:
Both games are top notch outstanding designs that receive first class support from the Develpers and forum members. This is what really seperates Matrix games from other developers - the quality and immediacy of the support you receive (I am not knocking other game companies; HPS for example is outstanding in their own right). When a player becomes stumped or does not understand a rule or feature, help is only a keystroke away; most queries generate multiple answers from folks who are experienced and willing to help.
Time: AE requires a significant commitment of time to play the grand scnarios; which is not supprising considering the sheer amount of units and decisions that have to be made on a (game) day to day basis. How many turns you can do in a day of course depends on how much time you have available to give (I would recommend that your relationship with your wife, girlfriend or dog is on solid ground before purchase....<grin>). I am playing a grand campaign against the AI, and as I ususally play on the weekends it will take a while. There are, of course, much smaller scenarios that move more rapidly and are doable in a short period of time (especially solitaire / AI) While the learning curve is very steep; the rules are well written and there is an awesome help feature - the fourm. The game is a very thorough and detailed treatment of the Pacific War, giving the player detailed control over his air, land and sea forces (which can number in the hundreds) - hence the time required to do a turn. The Japanese player also contends with managing his industry - actually one of the most important aspects he has. Also, note that AE is turn based.
Eagle day and BTR, while still requiring good chunks of time to play, focuses on the European Air War(ground combat is abstracted) and thus moves at a faster pace than AE. ED / BTR's level of detail (including German production management) is outstanding; the player is required to do a goodly amount of planning to optimize his chances of succesfully completing each raid (or defending the Reich). There are a number of campaigns to choose from -the Night Fighter Scnarios give a real feel to the technical war within a war (radar and radar countermeasures, blind navagation to name a few). Hard Sarge, Harley (leaders of the ED / BTR Team) are very professional, knowledgeable (with a good sense of humor) and are more than willing to help you when needed. As with AE, it is actually a very small team that carries the burden of colating player game issues, adding some first class enhancements and then putting out a solid patch that keeps this game on the leading edge of quality.
These are just some of my thoughts on the matter- you cannot lose with either game. OR - just get both. Please let us know what you deceids to do; we are glad you chose to join us.

I actually had to buy them both in the end and I love them both. These games are not mainstream games and I want to support their development and I have time to play games now in Christmas.
I just love air war in all its forms simulators, strategic games. I love modern age air war as well as WW2 air war in all of its forms. I spend money on books, documentary and games that cover these issues.
Same go for my love of war games I liked Uncommon Valour so I had to get Witp: Admirals edition. It is probably one of the most ambitious game series out there on the markets so I just had to get it.
I kind of knew that I have to get them both. [X(] [:D]
RE: Witch game to buy
WitpAE for sure. They are both good games but WitpAE is IMHO much more polished and a better user interface.
My Top Matrix Games 1) CMO MP?? 2) WITP/AE 3) SOW 4) Combat Mission 5) Armor Brigade

Bye bye social life .. and i would heartily reccomend trying a PBEM when you are comfortable with either game. really makes a world of differance to the addiction levels

Welcome indeed

Yeah WitpAE have very polished user interface. I can't recommed it to people that fear massive campaings but If you love hardcore wargames then you like it. I kind of hate materialism and buying of junk that you really don't need but money spend for quality digital products is money spend good. [;)]
I just got very satisfactory moment in EdtBtR I was able to develop strategy to beat up RAF in battle for Britain with moderate casulties as playing Luftwaffe.
RE: Witch game to buy
How hard is it to get into this game?
Have WitpAE and currently struggling to get into that one.
So how long does it take to understand this one?
Considering giving myself an late Xmas present

It really depends how much you know about WW2 Air Warfare tactics and strategies. I personally own 8 DVD documents about WW2 Air War and couple books dedicated for it and I regularly visit some www sites dedicated for WW2 air warfare.
I have played HPR defend the Reich before which was similar game than this but only covered night campaign for Bomber Command 43-45. I liked HPR game so I was quite sure that I’m going to like this game too. This is definitely better and larger game than HPR game and I’m not sure if HPR very old game even works in Vista / Windows 7. Not to forget that you don’t get any support for HPR game anymore here we have these good forums to discuss things.

For me it was not too hard to get in to game. I have only needed to open manual couple times to check something. If you know about air warfare you really get satisfactory moments from this game and if not but are ready to learn then I’m sure that in time you start to get those satisfactory moments. There is some learning curve for sure if you want to get all out from games like this.

When I started playing EDBTR, I did not even read the manual.
(No prior experience with the Talon Soft ersions).
The game is simpler and more focused than WitP AE but the level of depth is similar (despite the smaller scope).
