what targets for allies?

Post by dougmichel »

I just started a WITP campaign from dec 7 to the end. I play with the variable setup and got lucky and my air was on alert, and the carriers were not at home. I lost only 1 BB and a few smaller ships. My carriers were west and I sent them to stop the invasion of Wake, I was able to keep it. My initial plan is to move a lot of stuff to Noumea and lanch attacks on Kwajalein, and consolidate forces at Singapore in hopes of holding it a while. I have been successful in harassing some of the invasion of the phillipines but when their carriers were spotted, i fled back west. The calendar just turned 1/1/42. I have 5 BB on repair at SF harbor and a bunch of CA on repair at pearl. What should I be planning for in the early years, what is my main target at this point, what should I try to save if anything can be, and what pointers can you give a newbie?

Your main objective is basically mount yourself a good defense - for DEI campaign (far east in india) mount a defense around Diamond Harbor area, the AI will not attack India so your safe if you can pull some units out, if you want to try to hold something go for Mandalay, however this is a long shot.

In australia - Port Moresby is where you want to defend at all cost, I would suggest shifting units from australia here right away, and Noumea/Luganville are key places you want to stock up, start transporting supply/fuel here right away with units to defend.

First few months you pretty much are on defense with no choice, I would take few months to make sure these bases are secure by the air and ground then you can focus on doing raids to Gilbert islands (Tarawa, Makin etc).

Edited: I would suggest dropping a Seabee group or two off at Baker Island and building it up some, you don't want to directly send Ships from Pearl Harbor to Luganville or they risk going near Kwajeline and getting blown out the water, by sending to Baker they have a direct approch and are pretty safe. Least a size 2 port with some fuel to help those warships etc in transit.

Baker isn't really that important but its good to keep stocked with some fuel for those destroyers or smaller ships like tankers making runs.

Ok thanks for the tips. I have 5 or 6 TF sending supplies and units to Noumea right now, forgot to send stuff to PM. I did not think about the Diamond Harbor area, so I will start doing that ASAP. Thanks again!

By seabee do you mean an engineer unit that is named USN Base Force or something very similiar?

Well USN Base Force will do, however there are other Engineering units like "47th SeaBees" that are basically construction units that are dedicated to building ports/airfields, not sure how fast USN Base Forces build, but I know if you stack a few SeaBee's together they can build something up quick.

I would simply make a Transport group if 6 ships, 2 engineer units and supplies and sent to Baker Island, don't worry about an airfield so much as the Port.

Edit: Im not sure if there are many construction units available, but if you check seattle or Achorage there might be some there.

Another tip you can do: Move all ground units from Seattle/San Diego etc to San Francisco, which helps when you want to load the units up from 1 area not 3-4.

Only place I found to annoying to move troops from was Achorage, I had to do that by shipping instead not by rail (its 3000 miles from san fran by rail). Later in the war when you build up Political points you can transfer these units from "North Pacific" to Central Pacific if you need more units, however I'd use any available political points for Australia's units, transfer a few from Australia to Southwest pacific and move to Moresby.

Excellent, thanks for the tips.  I will search through all the ENG units again and see if I spot any named seabees.  So far I have been lucky that the IJN is keeping their CV fleet between japan and phillipines so I am able to harass their transports going to malaysia.  I might get another month out of singapore before I need to think about withdrawing.

So ya know I sent you a Private message, if you ever care to need help on the spot, but about singapore I basically withdrew everything from it, I tried twice in campaigns before and was unable to hold it, especially against the airforce/navy in the area. Only time I was successful was when Force Z was lucky enough to get a bad weather on its first turn, and second one I hit all the transports making landings before both ships were sunk.

I dont plan on winning or holding singapore, I am just going to hang out a while and pound on their shipping while I can, then pull out before it gets too hairy.  The one good thing so far is my bomber pilots are getting tons of exp and are hitting quite often now, will come in handy down the road I am sure.

I got your PM, thanks!
