Destroyed LCUs

Post by vonTirpitz »

What exactly becomes of destroyed LCUs? Unlike air units I see no way to ever resurrect them. Given that I have had several armored companies blunder into shock attacks when crossing rivers it would be nice to at least be given a chance to reform them in the home islands.

What is the developers' reasoning for this? I'm curious.

It seems like you ought to be able to expend PPs (a lot of them) to recreate a destroyed LCU as a cadre and build it up, at least for the Americans and Japanese. As it stands, the player (or me at least) is reluctant to commit a unit where it could potentially be permanently destroyed, even where it might be a justifiable risk from a military standpoint.

Well you can take a small fragment (not divided) of your large LCU's, and send it back to a safe base for rebuilding after the LCU is destroyed ... a little gamey, but something I'm sure many ppl do.

If unit is part of OOB of higher unit that starts divided (from the start - like armored company of a division), you can still combine the other parts together and missing part of the unit will be filled from replacements.

If unit was part of higher unit purposedly divided by player (/A/B/C), then you are no longer able to recombine the unit.

I dont know which of these two situations you are facing, ...

4th marine regiment was reformed during the war. 31 infantry regiment was reformed in january 1946. as the game can go into 1946 these 2 show dead units should be able to rebuild.

I suppose my thinking was that if units cannot be replaced (particularly as the Japanese) then all the extra micromanagement of armaments and vehicle industries seems a little pointless if players are strictly limited to the existing TOE.

It seems it would make the game much simpler to ignore the guesswork of managing those industries if players could simply know that the industries would support a percentage of the needed reinforcement and replacement schedules.

Otherwise, if I knew that I could expand on the OOB by at least rebuilding lost LCUs then the industrial effort makes a little more sense.

Just pondering it. I noticed that I seem to have overbuilt the vehicle industry in the first two months because the demand for vehicle assembly points seem to drop off massively after January 42. Perhaps one of the other players has a better idea of how to plan these industries. I know that some can be derived by WITP Tracker and the reinforcement schedule but translating that information into where the ideal levels of industry should be is less than clear IMHO.

Thanks for the input folks.

Not sure if this is gamey. As long as the replacement rates are set correctly it's just an additional sink for your squads and devices. If those are scarce in the first place you will probably not rebuild the unit and if they are abundant it's perfectly alright to build units with them. As we cannot introduce new LCUs I think its ok to use the old ones in this case.
If you gained knowledge through the forum, why not putting it into the AE wiki?

That's pretty much how I think about it ...

I agree, not so much a problem with Base Forces, but large infantry formations are a pain to rebuild. Best case scenario (late war India and USA), it takes 3 months+ worth of infantry replacements to rebuild a division.
