Mistake Made, Auto Sub Ops "On"

Post by Zemke »

I just spent the last four or five days doing my first turn as Japan for two PBEM games. I didn't think, but I had "Auto Sub Ops ON". My question is, can my opponent take manual control of his subs if he wants to or will the computer ALWAYS have control. My mistake is pretty much a deal beaker, unless he can take control of his subs, and I hate to think I will have to re-do that first "Nippon" turn.

I looked it up in the manual, but it did not say one way or the other. I ran a test game, and I could switch computer controlled subs to human, so things look like they may work out, but will the computer reassert control each turn?

Yes you can take over control manually and the AI will not take over control of the subs unless you give control back to the AI

No, if you switch them to "human control" they will remain as "human control". So, you will be ok, no need for a re-start, just re-assign all your subs.

Don't know if any new subs that enter the map though will be on auto control...

You can't turn auto-ops off once the game starts (at least you couldn't in Witp). While you can assume command of computer control subs, the computer will continue to create task forces and assign them destinations. You'll have to keep an eye out for them and take over as soon as they leave port.

Mynok is correct. Even if you can switch over subs to manual again, the stupid AI will create sub patrol TFs everywhere and send them to stupid places. With the hundreds of Allied subs it will become quite hard to keep an eye on every sub.

According to the manual (pg. 24):

"All options can be changed in a game (except during PBEM games) from the tool bar."

So unfortunately, you can't change your settings. And as others have stated, the computer will do very, very stupid things with your subs. AE is better than WitP, though; you can set up patrol zones so you don't have to check the subs every turn. Subs that are in manual control will stay that way until disbanded, then the computer will try to send them out. Also all subs that arrive as reinforcements will be under computer control unless you change them.

IMHO, the AUTO SUB OPS option should be OFF as default; it's easy to overlook when starting a game, and a real PITA to have to check on hundreds of subs each turn.

Would be nice if can change three game option things from preferences button. sub ops ai toughness and turn delay. especial turn delay so can speed up game in slow time. i not use ai so no think what change to that would do. sub ops can not see a reason for not able to change.

Yes, an incredible pain in the neck. Wish I could turn it off but you can't (devs. are you listening?) It can be managed but still a lot of trouble. Problem is you can't disband subs in port as the computer will just send them right back out.
