Dixie vs Terminus. Pt2. No baddies....

Post by Dixie »

We're still at war [:D] This is turn 30 (10th September), if the LW AS score drops below 4 then it's an automatic loss for the Germans. By now, the AS victory is beyond T's reach and the LW has been targetting industrial and urban areas for a couple of weeks.

blah blah stuff

Luckily (?) for me, the factories that have been bombed out in the last week or so have all been due to upgrade to newer models of aircraft. So the time that would have been lost through relocating the production is partly absorbed by the fact that those factories would have been retooling anyway.
Attacks are still being sent against the RAF airfields, most of the primary airfields are operational but some are damaged. Northolt is currently out of action and the squadrons have been dispersed. Other airfields that are out of action are Exeter, Gosport, Manston and Boscombe Down. Nothing too bad there, the biggest loss is Exeter which has left a gap in the air coverage around the South West.

Fighter Command strengths are shown in the pic (Blue colums=S, Yellow=U/S), although the numbers are slightly inaccurate. One squadron (12 Group) is in the process of re-equiping with the Hurricane MkIIa and two squadrons of Hurricanes have been moved south from 13 Group to 11 Group. So far there hasn't been much movement between groups. Most squadron moves have been to evac damaged bases, it's been almost 2 weeks since a squadron moved down from 13 Group to replace a tired 11 Group one. Also not shown in the pic are the teo Royal Navy squadrons defending Scapa Flow.
What T probably doesn't know is that most of the fighting has been carried out by a core of less than a dozen squadrons. Of particular note has been the performance of 74 Sqn under the command of 'Sailor' Malan. 33 kills for 9 losses has been a good performance, Sailor himself is my leading ace with 7 kills, all of them 109s at this point.

0800
Radio traffic has been rising for the last hour, so fighters are ordered up from Kirton Lindsey, Digby and Wittering. They have been ordered to protect the approach to London (Spitfires and Hurricanes) or to orbit north of London (Defiants).
Unfortunately, it looks like the LW is launching a smaller raid than usual, and raid 1 (50+) is detected forming up over France whilst the fighters are still on the ground.

0830
The scrambeling fighters were slow in getting off the ground. The Luftwaffe force is almost at the Thames Estuary before any interceptors get close to the raid. In the event, it's not much of a start as 601 Sqn shoot down a straggler and damage another.
The Luftwaffe force's target is Standard Oil, another indication that the targetting priorities have changed. As the LW seems unable to defeat the RAF directly they have instead been targetting the industries that support the RAF.

0900
Raid 1 has returned home, the oil storage was badly damaged (91) by a massed force of He-111s. Losses were 4 RAF fighters shot down by escorting 109 fighters, including Malan himself. Luckily only 1 pilot is wounded and the other 3 parachute to safety. In return the RAF have shot down 18 Luftwaffe bombers, not a bad rate of return.
Radio activity is increasing, indicating another raid is in the process of forming, hopefully it'll be up soon so that the squadrons ordered up to patrol before Raid 1 will still be airborne.

0930
Raid 2 is inbound, currently it's looking like a 200+ force of bombers. Fighters from 12 Group have been ordered up to patrol around Southampton. Instead it looks like the LW may be heading towards Bristol instead where 2 squadrons of Spitfires are patrolling. Once the raid crosses the coast then the Southampton defenders will be moved to intercept the raid.

1000
Raid 2 bombed Avonmouth oil storage. Luckily damage here was only slight, with the raid outbound the RAF has come off on top from this raid. Although the fighting isn't over, so far Raid 2 has cost the RAF one fighter in return for 9 Luftwaffe machines, including the Commander of ZG.26.

It looks like Raid 3 is also forming up over France in the Normandy area. No indication of strength yet, but the radio activity (about 100) means it's likely to be a big one. Fighters will be sent up to patrol the most likely targets. With the formation point of the raid, I'm gambling that it'll be going somewhere SW of London. The most valuable target in that area at the moment in the Hawker works, so that's where the fighters are going to be. If I'm wrong, then there's plenty of time to relocate the force if the LW moves further inland.

One of the recce kites has been shot down near London. The others are primarily involved in photographing factories. Including the group near Bristol, coincidence?.....

Several smaller LW forces are also in the air, most likely recce flights. Whilst they aren't a major threat to the RAF they are useful assest for T. Early on in the campaign the LW recce kites, especially the slower bomber types, took a severe beating and it's been a while since they have been up in force. 66 Sqn are my usual recce interceptors sending a section against each contact.

1030
Raid 3 is moving towards the Southampton area. The only target in that area that is undamaged is a power station, there's not enough time to move a decent force to block a thrust against there. But in case T has another plan, part of the force protecting the Hawker factory has been ordered to move to protect the cluster of factories near Bristol. This goes against my usual tactics, 11 Group fighters are not usually moved to protect other areas but as 10 Group has just dealt with a major raid there's not much other choice. Should another raid develop soon then 12 Group will have to provide most of the force, the Duxford Big Wing and Fowlmere Spitfire Wing are both being held back for this contigency.

Currently, the score is 28:5. 1 RAF pilot has been killed and 1 injured. All of the Luftwaffe crews are either killed or sitting under armed guard.

1100
Raid 3 was sent against Fawley EPS (Power Station) casuing moderate (43) damage. The raid escaped unmolested, elsewhere three more Luftwaffe shufti kites were shot down, including one of the elusive Ju 86Ps. Not sure what it was doing at a reachable height, but I'm not complaining.
Radio activity has been dropping, and with Raid 3 back over the Channel the RAF squadrons are being recalled to rearm and refuel. There's a lot of daylight left, so I have to be ready.

Spoke too soon. Another raid is inbound near Dover, time to scramble some extra forces...

1130
Raid 4 has bombed the Firestone rubber factory, due to a slight cock-up the Spitfire squadrons have all pounced on a single group of escorts that are withdrawing to France already. The Hurricanes are engaged against the bombers and remaining escorts.
Damage to the factory was enough to put it out of action for now. (67 damage) Raid 4 was the last effort from the Luftwaffe today.

End of Turn

The final score for today was 33 Luftwaffe losses in return for 8 RAF fighters lost. 2 pilots KIA and 3 WIA, could have been worse but could have been much better...
The lack of airfield targets is a bonus, a chance to repair the facilities is always welcome. It's also a bonus as most of the undamaged industrial sites are far inland giving more time to react to raids.

Losses recently have dropped off for both sides as fatigue starts to take it's toll. Although I can't be sure, I'd say that the LW is suffering more in this regard. In particular the 109 pilots have been busy, there aren't enough 109s to fully protect the bombers as it is, so the gruppen have been in almost constant action. Most days they're under almost constant attack whilst over England which adds to the fatigue.
In comparison, the RAF pilots are ina ction for shorter periods as their squadrons reach the combat at different times. Plus there's the ability for some rotation should it be needed. Also, my patrols often get recalled when it feels like the raids will not pass close to them.

More Summary
Not a bad day's work all round. RAF strength has increased slightly with the addition of a squadron of Hurricane IIa fighters. A squadron has been moved back into Tangmere which had been abandoned for a while after some heavy raids.

T's Luftwaffe seem to have given up on the airfield campaign, although I never really felt under that much pressure in that regard. Although he did bomb Tangmere, Biggin, Kenley, Northolt, Hornchurch and Middle Wallop there wasn't enough concentration or follow up. Whilst I did fully leave Northolt and Tangmere and partly abandon Biggin and Kenley continual raids would have left the London area bases untenable. Hornchurch and Middle Wallop were hardly touched, a major oversight from T in my opinion especially as the Hornchurch Spitfies have been carving up the Luftwaffe. There were no efforts made against other bases in 12 Group, so I've been happy to concntrate my squadrons at those bases.

12 Group has more Spitfires than 11 Group because it gives them more time to climb to altitude to bounce the top escorts. I prefer to use patrols to block potential routes rather than direct interceptions. This means that most of the combats take place over land saving more pilots. Patrols are sent up to block the raids, and in the event of fighter sweeps aircraft are sent up from bases along the flight path to keep them out of the way. Fighters are avoided unless they're escorting bombers. Especially in the early days, I'd intercept recce kites as often as possible. Most are easy kills for Hurricanes and Spitfires, so it's easy experience for the pilots. At the campaign start 66 Sqn were mostly involved in these interceptions. Colt is far enough from the coast that there's plenty of time to climb to altitude and most of the LW recce missions came from Holland.

Things to bear in mind, Gladiators are not good against anything other than Stukas. Once I've got enough spare airframes the Glads will be upgraded to something else, probably Hurris or Whirlwinds.
My Spitfires have racked up some impressive scores, four squadrons each have 30+ kills. Generally the Spits are set to patrol at 25k until ordered to attack, when they are sent to intercept it's usually against the highest layer of escorts to reduce the chance of being bounced.
Hurricanes are your major workforce, their successes have been more limited than the Spits with most squadons having a kill:loss ratio that's fairly even. I suspect this is because they're operating at altitudes where they're more likely to be bounced and their targets are more robust than the 109s. There are no stand out performers amongst the units, although there's a new top ace. S/L John Aitken of 601 Sqn is currently topping the charts. The Huuris have had variable succes against the 109s, they can hold their own against the E-1. They're slightly outclassed by the E-4 with the E-7 being superior.
The Defiants are useful if there's no single seat fighter resistance. I'm thinking about packing mine off up to Scotland, currently they're in position to defend the Humber region where 109s can't reach. The Whirlwinds have only seen one combat so I can't comment on them at the moment.

The strength of RAF Fighter Command after the day's action and the Luftwaffe raids.
