Spent a lot of time on this turn.
- US subs are entering our shipping lanes and I have to take action.
More ASW patrols have been established and I'm converting as many AKL's to PB's as I can.

One problem: All our patrol ac have low ASW skills; to adjust this I've ordered a major training program to increase this vital skill. I've also spent time adjusting the asw ac's search patterns, takes time to get the hang of it.

Seems like I have picked up to much oil and resources from Port Arthur, getting message about to little supplies for the industry. Bugger, need to keep an eye on everything!

Tomorrow we start bombarding Bataan from the ground while our troops will assault Johore Bharu and mass for the final push into Singers! - I'm personally looking forward to inspecting the city as soon as it falls, hopefully within the end of January cause tickets are already booked with Nippoin Airlines [:D]

This one was a classic! The Spearfish attacked the Nasusan Maru on the surface and hit her with 4 or 5 torpedoes - all duds!!!
The freaked out captain then egaged with the 3" gun while the freighter returned fire. After a prolonged fight the sub withdrew with smoking holes in the conning tower! [:-] The freighter is in poor shape, will try to make land.

oh no... that´s something I just noticed this last turn of my Allied PBEM and I´ve thought I would have been lucky in damaging it 50%... [:(]

A couple of question to the experts out there;

1. When a fighter like the Zero or Oscar is ordered on a sweep mission is it then an advantage to put it on 15000 feet (its optimal altitude) or should it be set highter (18-24000 feet) in order to gain an altitude advantage over the enemy?

2. In Malaya we're getting ready to move into Singapore - is it best to move on "combat" mode instead of "move" mode in order to avoid excessive losses when we're forced to shock attack? I assume as much and this is what I will order...unless I get other advice!

Had to scuttle the AMC that got torpedoed yesterday; got some kewl message regarding bulkheads giving in - and then; crew is getting ready to abandon ship as water wash over the decks! Nice..

Another question;
When I order my Sallys and Lily's to bomb Singapore and Bataan we score very few hits at 20-25k feet.
So I have lowered the bombing altitude to 15k feet and this helps, but we're taking more damage from AA.

What altitude do you use in such situations?

No doubt Andy wants to take advantage of the fighting in Singapore and Keep us away from Rangoon as long as possible.
I'm mostly interested in shooting down as many Commonwealth ac as possible and make life easier later on. - The Army now has to show its Bushido spirit and hold on.

I tend to go as low as I feel comfortable with. 10-15k sounds about the right altitude. The good old "go in at 6k" witp style no longer produces good results. Or atleast, no good results for the bombers.

1. When a fighter like the Zero or Oscar is ordered on a sweep mission is it then an advantage to put it on 15000 feet (its optimal altitude) or should it be set highter (18-24000 feet) in order to gain an altitude advantage over the enemy?

It depends on the plane you are fighting. So for example if your maneuver rating is only 2 points higher than the other plane at 15k, but 4 points higher at a higher altitude, then you'll have better performance at the higher altitude. There is no set formula anymore in air to air, it's all based on the different performance abilities of the planes involved now.

Personally I haven’t learned all the different models specific abilities yet. But I’m sure after some time we’ll all know what altitudes are best when facing the different model planes. I hesitate to say you should go into the database and compare altitude bands. It’s up to you how “unaware” you want to be for your first big game.

If you prefer to feel it out by experimenting (my personal preference) with things in the game environment, then don’t look at the numbers and change things around occasionally and see how it goes. Otherwise do a side by side comparison of the database numbers and make the decision from that for the different models you come up against.

Grab the 90th regiment from Korea for PM. It's a good unit. I highly doubt the mass of troops in PM are very good. You'll need the 144th and it, plus probably part of a division to handle that lot though.

I am learning while doing...and it seems sensible to go for altitude advantage since Jap fighters will have a higher manouverability at these altitudes as well.

Losses to AA below 15k feet have been high - a bit annoyed at how losses and damage is reported after air combat.
- The number of ac shot down is BS, way too low. In RL way to high numbers were reported and that would be to prefer to 1-4.
- Same with number of damaged ac, think 100 of my bombers were reported damaged today and when I look at them hardly a dozen requires maintenance.

Got 2 crack regiments preparing for PM, one is already in Truk and the other is enroute together with an engineer regiment.
Don't want to place unit in malaria bases unless I have to.

On Bataan I've had to rest the artillery as disruption peaked into 60-70's after 2-3 days of bombardment.

Two things:
1) In the turn sequence, the aircraft repair phase occurs after both air phases and the air transport phase. So many planes which were reported as damaged could be repaired before you get a chance to look.
2) I *think* the number of damaged planes counts the total number of damaging hits, so if the same plane is damaged three times it's reported as three.

Which isn't to say there isn't FOW in the combat report but it might not be as exaggerated as you think.

Hm, it's a bit confusing if every hit on a plane is recorded as individual damage...not the best feature.
Minor damage may be quickly repaired and thus shouldn't bother the CinC - only damage the requires 1+ days to repair needs to be reported if you ask me.

Fish; give your raiders aggressive leaders, set patrol vectors in an area were your subs operate and enter a high react radius.
I also put a couple of Jake's on the ships, with a range of 10 hexes these are much more valuable assets.

The little drama around Rangoon continues; We tried to sweep Rangoon but our fighters went in in separate groups morning - afternoon. This was not fortunate and we lost 10 Zeros and 2 Oscars while shooting down only 3-4 enemy ac.

We simply have to counter-bomb the enemy ground troops and hang on until Singapore falls.
- Then we will transfer the Army bobmers and level Rangoon once and for all.

It will be another 2 days until our army enters Singapore - on Bataan I'm uncertain how to proceed.
With such extreme fatigue levels obtained in the last bombardment it looks like we only can fire our guns once every 3rd day if we want to keep our units in shape. It is of course possible to ignore fatigue and fire only the artillery units around the clock for a week before pausing 3-4 days. - No one with similar experiences?

Pretty slow going as we're struggling into Singapore from Johore at 10-12 miles per day.
Also bringing forward troops and supplies to sustain our next advances into Sumatra and Java.

Trying another bombardment at Bataan tomorrow, some units still got 40+ fatigue after resting for 2-3 days.
I'm mostly bombing airfields and ports at Bataan from the air - maybe I should switch some bombers to ground attacks as well?
- My thought is that we need to drain enemy supplies before we can get anywhere.

Also somewhat short of support, with so few Army HQ's available I'm not sure what to do - releasing a few from China?

Andy celebrates his victory in Burma!
- At least we know that he packs a punch and got 60000 odd troops up in Rangoon, that's more than I thought.

We're ready to move on Palembang; 2 special naval landing units, a crack Battalion landed by fast transports and paratroopers to assure some extra punch. The force sails from Kuching today and is supported by a naval squadron and a few light carriers standing off. We also got naval air formations on Borneo that will provide support.

Tomorrow the army crosses the Johore Strait and enters Singapore island!
A few days later we will attempt a deliberate attack and evaluate the lay of the land - we got more than 3000 assault points gathered so hopefully it will be quick.
