I do play. I play extensively. I know it's not perfect, nothing ever is. I do not, and did not, criticise the community, so your comment is the disengenuous one. I was looking for a sub-forum where people might be more like me. Apparently this is not happening here.

Well, we do get distracted by obtuse body parts ... as you can see from the below recent post ...

another example of anal discharge systems at work in AE[X(]

And hence this may not be a place "where people might be more like me" ... but this is ... overall ... a decent ... mostly adult group ... and they are serious about the game ... so .. you could do worse ... [:)]

I just purchased this game on recommendation of friends and wanted to see what other players were saying. I am disturbed because I see so many complaints about so many things. I like the game, and the way my friends play it is nothing like what I see here. I am beginning to think that I am in the wrong forum. Is there another?

So that wasn't your first post then? And your second in another thread didn't fire a broadside at one of our most respected posters?

AE was announced to be under development about two years ago in the WITP forum. Finally, late last July it was made available. Add together the number of hit this forum and the original WITP forum have and you will see that there a lot of passionate players from just about everywhere in the world. I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about WITP until about 5 years ago I got WITP as a Christmas present from me to me. [:D] I was wrong. [8|]

Not all the ideas that went into the "wish list" for this game made it. Some players continue to voice strong opinions about a particular omission that they "perceive" exist. We have gotten timely patches and even hot fixes on the weekend. That is a major plus for the developers, who are mainly players themselves that did volunteer to make this great game without financial compensation.

During the years I have had both games, only computer problems have slowed me down from enjoying it. My collection of other games just can dust.

ENJOY IT!! I know I do![&o]

Enormous replayability.  You are not a wargamer if you have not played this.

You're in the right forum, but maybe you should play the game a bit - note that whilst it's brilliant, it's not perfect (probably never will be - not for everyone) - and then perhaps lurk a bit before wading in - after all you have only been on the forum for less than a couple of hours or so and have only just bought the game by your own admission - so to criticise elements of the community some with many thousands of valuable posts is disingenuous at best

Apparently not. [:D]

"The game probably wouldnt be as good as it is now, if it wasnt for the community, complainers included."

That is an absolute fact. Admiral's Edition was created by members of the forum, who wanted to improve WITP. Enough talented forum members banded together to create a proposal that Matrix couldn't refuse, and what they thought would be a one year project turned into four plus years of their lives... and they are still at it.

As others have mentioned, this is a huge and diverse community - and if you give it time you will learn a great deal about the Pacific Theatre of WW2, as well as many other subjects you had no idea might be interesting. With so many different personalities out there, people will rub each other the wrong way. Sometimes people forget the number one rule: Keep it Civil, but for the main part this is the most civil game forum I have ever frequented.

Keep reading the forum, and you might find that we ain't such a bad group of guys.

Complaining in this forums is useful because you get heard by the developers.

I agree.

I have accumulated vast amount of information about Pacific War by reading this forum and getting the books recommended. As avid amateur military historian, I am very pleased with AE. I don't have much competitive streak in gaming, so I play AE (and WitP before, and Pacific War before that) against AI to see what sort of options Japan and USA had in Pacific War. I think game gives very good idea about difficulties faced by both sides.

I for one would like to know just what you mean by "people...more like me"? Would you care to elaborate? What are you like? [&:]

The French word 'grognard' means grumbler. It's used for veteran wargamers. You've just discovered why. [:D]

I've used that word for years without knowing where it came from. You learn something new every day around here.

Grognards were the soldiers of Napoleon. This name was given to them by the Emperor itself: the army was asked to make force march more then often, and the soldiers grumble, but did it (well, i think this is a french charecteristic...[:D] ). And the name lasted...

I like the game, and the way my friends play it is nothing like what I see here. I am beginning to think that I am in the wrong forum. Is there another?

In the never-never land of internet forums, I'm sure there are others dedicated to WiTP-AE; however, I have never been to them because this one is all I need.

One of the things I truly enjoy about this one is the civility of the posters who stick around. Sure, we get those who want to crash and bash everyone and their opinions - they just don't last here. We pretty much self police ourselves by use of the ignore button, and only VERY rarely is someone so insulting that a mod has to step in with a ban.

There are crotchety old men here, one in particular has this fascination with toes . What I like about this forum is that those who have been around along time are more than willing to help those who help themselves. What I mean is that to get the most help, show in your post that you have put in some effort to find the answer to your question before posting.

For example: "What's up with altitude bands for fighters? Do they really have an effect on the game?" is NOT a good way to ask a question.

A better way to ask the question would be: "I can tell from reading the manual that the altitude a fighter is at has an effect on its performance and that is why the maneuverability numbers are different. What about when one plane bounces another that is at a lower altitude? Is the higher maneuverability rating of the bouncing aircraft at the lower altitude used in the calculation of the outcome, or is the original rating the one used in the calculation?"

One is a general question where the OP wants us to divine what they are asking and then construct an answer that verifies a pre-conceived notion and the other is specific question that entails a specific answer. In general the answer to the first question will be "yes", where the second might be answered by one of the air-team members with a very detailed answer.

Heh, Heh! Should I send RDonlon a link to the "disregard" thread? Nah.... [:D]

Welcome, RDonlon. It is a grand game with stunning support. The forum helps to shape the support. As for the "forumites... well, we're only wierd to people who are puzzled by someone who can spend years trying to play one game. (Strange, but some people find that to be odd.)

Don't take this guy seriously. Here is his second post:

HISTORY

The Queens did not use escorts. They cruised at 29-30 knots, which was sufficiently fast that a sub had a near-nil chance of developing a target solution in the time between first detection and engagement. (When I was doing the system modelling for A/N BSY-2, I had to model this process. There are a number of books in the open literature that address the issues of interest.) Note that the American CVTFs moved at about that speed when strategically deploying, but with cruisers (but not destroyers, however) in attendance to protect against SAGs. They were also pretty much invulnerable to submarine attack.

I don't know what the game does. Most TFs and convoys moved at speeds that subs could handle. This is the sort of issue that you need a background in OR and some submarine experience to get right.
This is one of the most pretentious posts I have seen in many years. I assume you are not a developer because if you were you would have put that in your curious ciriculum vitae. Since you are not, I wonder what in the world you are talking about. Just who do you think you are? And don't play stupid games please. I work for State at sec level 5.

Beware: "I work for State at sec level 5."
