B5N2 MAD

Post by 1EyedJacks »

The B5N2 Kate will receive MAD & the type N-6 Radar in the future. When I look up Aircraft weapons I see two entrys for MAD - one in 4210 and the other in 4406. My WAG is the Kate won't receive MAD until 4406. Does anyone know for sure, or can someone point me to how I can confirm this?

Range on the MAD for either entry is 1. Is that 1 hex (40 miles) or something else?

I don't know the availability date of the MAD for the B5N2 Kate, but in the editor MAD for the B5N2 Kate is Device #1919. A quick look at Device #1919 shows it having a range of 1 K yards, that is 1000 yards, an accuracy of 10, and an effect of 2.

Yes, the Japanese MAD is available only in 06/44. The 10/42 one is the allied version.

I see that the Ki-49-Ia Helen ( 42/4 ) is shown as having a front mounted MAD. Is that something different ?

Same Device #1919 in the Editor as the B5N2 Kate. They are both shown as front mounts in the Editor, so they should have the same effect.

MAD detects the effect of the sub's hull on the earth's magnetic field, so it only works when you fly directly overhead. Probably safe to say that the range entry means "current hex".

I think I have been laboring under a misunderstanding. It just dawned on me that just because the Ki-49-Ia joins the game in 42/4 and is listed s having a MAD, does not mean that it has the MAD in 42 correct ?

If that is so, then why is an earlier model of the Helen listed as having a MAD, but not the later models ? Do I need to keep some of the earlier Ias in game all the way until '44 in order to have the MAD available on a bomber ?

I think I need to pay more attention to the editor.

You will have to keep some of the earlier Ias in game stuman, and since the editor specifies the range as 1000 yards, it would be a good idea to fly below 3000 feet if you want to detect anything.

Thanks. This has been very interesting and helpful. I was planning to keep a smallish number for possible search/ASW purposes. I do not know if they will really help, but we shall see [:)]

Thanks all - I hadn't gotten as far as the Helens yet - this was kind of a two-fer for me. [:)]

Even when plane has been listed with having device, it'll really become available only when device becomes available.
