Mike,
Once you take Tavoy and Victoria Point, the next important objective is Port Blair. This is a case of denying Fionn a base rather than it to be an primary objective of yours. It is important for you, but right now it is more important to him. It is the only way he will be able to get his short legged Buffalos (16 hex transfer range) from Malaya to Burma/India. Another reason why I favor a rapid capture of Timor (Koepang with an Air HQ is nice [:)]), Kendari, and Ambon on the other end of the SRA. I want to keep what is there, there.
Don't forget that Fionn loves to use his patrol and transport planes to transport troops to and fro. Plan appropriately.
Hi Michael,
lol - Fionn and his bloody transports. [:D]

I see what you are saying about Port Blair but it is really undefensible. Better to just level it with bombers - don't you think? Call it a live-fire training base?

I don't actually think that taking Port Blair early is that important. The long range bombers will escape regardless and there is only 1 fighter and 1 TB unit that is worth saving. The others never upgrade beyond buffaloes and Vildebeest.

Who cares about holding it ?

-It gives you great eyes , you see everthing fleeying Malaysia NW , meaning everything will go South so you can act accordingly.
-It allows your Betties and Nells from malaysia to hit a huge area for which you can provided cover if you need it eg see a CV send a Zero unit in to sweep .
-It stops him getting a fighter and Torpedo bomber unit out forcing it to go to the DEI. Dont discount these units even if he gets it out with 1 pilot its worth a lot to him as he can train up rookies who will haunt you in mid 42.
- It stops him putting a PBY unit there which is really usefull to see what you are doing eg a Convoy to Burma.

Typical action is airborne , Air Tranport in a fragment with AV support ,send in a Mavis unit , fly out paratroops. The eyes are worth it alone .. I like to take it really early or you need to scout it.

What is the cost ? An AirBorne unit occupied for a few weeks. Meh.. There are better places for bomber training eg PI & China.

In terms of holding its actually pretty easy to hold in 42 since with the great eyes it gives if he sends ships you can move some Betties in range (fly in a zero for cover if needed) and make it really expensive. Ok he can still take it but its expensive the early warning really helps .

What do you mean only even 2 units is major .. Also Buffalo units make great trainers for your pilots thats quite major its not like WITP where the allies get a huge stream of decent pilots , if they are carefull and train them they really kick some IJAAF butts by march 42. ! I think Some Buffalos and Vildebeest are dutch so not that usefull still those 2 units are gold.

Anyway the place is most usefull for recon to guide your subs and Betties and to deny the information to him.

1EyedJacks,

Ahem...unaccustomed as I am to providing comments to the "bad guys"[:D]...I thought that maybe I might be forgiven if I so ventured, in a baby step way.

1. Small, single, non combined arms units (eg tank battalions, artillery battalions) seem to be particularly vulnerable to destruction (as in one minute they are still on the map, the next they have oomphed out of existence) from the air. Consequently, it seems very important to provide such units which may be advancing independently of a major column, with fighter CAP.

2. The fact that you have determined at the outset to not invade the USSR, should not necessarily mean that you abandon any expansion plans in that region. A rapid advance in China (one that ruthlessly exploits shock attacks with pursuit orders for armour units in reserve) could see you wondering exactly where next to use your mainland field army post July 1942. For logistical reasons, it would probably best be deployed against the Soviet Union in the second half of 1942.

3. In AE Northern Australia offers some interesting axes of advance. Surplus units from the victorious Southern Army post the capture of the SRA will suffice, with no need to take units from China (see point 2 above).

4. Handled well, the ABDA surface fleet can significantly derail your invasion plans. However, with skillful use of your air and naval assets, you can set several traps for it and destroy it within the first 4 months.

Combat Report for 12.7.41

Post by 1EyedJacks »

Hi all,

First a little house keeping. I'm really not much into posting the entire combat report (those suckers are long in this game!) so I think I'll just upload each day's file and for those of you that are interested. I'll also toss in pics here and there but normally only under request.

So - Combat Report for 12.7.41

A look @ the area around Singapore and estimated damage to Port/Airfield on turn 12.9.41. Subs have now mined Palembang and should be out of harms way next turn. I had hoped to catch Force Z performing a sortie or perhaps DDs/merchies from Hong Kong trying to make a break for it. In truth, I still might catch that TF of DDs that Fionn was racing into the South China Sea...

Fionn is still contesting Singapore airspace... More Sweeps and landscaping of the airfield are planned for 2morrow.

lol - Alfred my friend - I always look forward to your thoughts. It's been a while since I've last coorsponded with you. I hope life has been good to you and wish you a most prosperous New Year.

In regards to #1 - those small units that sometimes get the kabosh put on them - they are normally in transport mode instead of combat mode when assaulted - yes? I was reading about that in an AAR (I wish I could remember who's tho). My hope in these initial steps of the war is to keep Fionn back-pedeling under the weight of my air arm. That should prevent his LB from getting too deep behind my lines.

USSR is definately off of the list for now, as you noted. In late 42 or (hopefully) mid 43 I'll probably have expanded as far as I can in the DEI and upwards into India. I'll be yanking everything I can from the Kwantang Army to use in China. My WAG is that I can pull the HQ units too and use the whole batch of ART plus a few INF with all of the ENG Engineers as a spear point with loads of Engineer Aviation units plus strong air support - a heavy second prong to my attack of China. Right now I'm thinking the Kwantang will take the high road and the CEA will take the low. So if I have a way to get back towards Russia in time with the main components of that Kwantang spear then, yes, it might be fun to play in Mother Russia.

What do you think of massing most of my armor after I dig into the DEI and trying a Blitzkrieg in OZ? ROFL. The thought has been fun to chew on.

Of course I left my fly open in the pacific... I'm trying to get support up there in the form of Zeroes, AA, & supples. If I can buy a week I'll pull the two CVLs and the two CVEs back. Right now I've got a heavy sub picket plus the long-legged PAs. I'm hoping I can zip up my fly before he whacks my pee-pee with a stick. Fionn always seems to find a way to stick his opponent in their rear areas - lol. Still, I'd rather have him poking at me in the islands right now then anywhere else.

ABDA - I am kinda hoping my air arm will take the bite out of that - but I do have BBs and I know how to use them - [;)].

Did you ever get a new PC? Ya know you owe me a game - <grin>.

I'm waiting on the 3rd patch and then I'll try to add Carl to my dance card. I'm not sure how long Fionn will want to play this game. It's suppose to be a test for EA. From my e-mail coorspondence with Fionn he seems to be enjoying the detailed reports and the FoW. Right now we are trading secrets - lol. He is trying to figure out how many planes I'm actually losing in my attacks and I'm trying to see how effective the ASW munitions are for Japan.

I wish there was a way to automate some of this micromanagment. I mean, all of the bells and whistles are fun to play with but to do search arcs on a bunch of air units gets to be a real pain in the mouse-finger.

In truth I wish there was a way to give some of those routing options for TFs to my air units - lol. I'd love to give my LB an if/then/else statement along the lines of - if fighter escorts join up then attack target else go home - rofl.

TTFN my friend,

Mike

Well first of all, I'm liking the search arcs. I had set all of my LB @ Takao to Naval Attack as I'd seen ships @ Hong Kong transferring supplies plus those DDs running into the South China Sea and then these enemy TFs running from Hong Kong.

My LB did ok except for a pair of groups that went into Manila where Fionn has a pair of TFs that show up as a CL and a pair of DDs. So that sucked two air groups into Manila and Fionn's CAP had it's way with them.

Image

See the TF by Sabang? Last turn it was down near Kuala Lumpur and I thought it was Force Z. I moved Nells into Singora and set them to Naval Attack @ 6k. As you can read from the Combat Report I posted, I tapped TKs instead of the BB & BC I was hoping for.

Image

Mini-KB lurks for fleeing merchies from Manila. I actually caught the Boise by Davao last turn where I put a fish into her. She's disappeared but I did tap into some merchant meat over there in the Sulu Sea. These CVL/CVE seem to have lower sorties then what I last recall. Of course my memory is probably a tad warped from my preference to play those what-if mods. I'll have to recall this TF soon, sigh. Fionn buzzed the mini-kb with B-17s and missed. Along with the fact that they are probably really low on experience, LB get a penalty if they try to bomb under 5k and his are coming in @ 3k. How about we keep that little bit of info just between us? [:D]

I've been watching sub ops and ASW ops closely. So far it looks like my ASW TFs do fairly well against his subs in shallow water. I've missed him every time in deep water. I've only seen about 5 encounters so it's not a huge body of evidence but I'm taking notes - lol.

If you read those naval encounters with Fionn's PTs, those were pretty sweet. He had moved those out near Laoag and I saw them last turn. I think maybe the slower tempo of movement in the game might be throwing Fionn off? Anyway, TF14(1CL, 5DD)SC had been following TF88(2PB, 9SC, 6DMS, 7xAK)Amphib. TF18 has a max speed of 10 so I took TF14 off of follow mode and shot it ahead and into Laoag.

I didn't see anything from Fionn @ Aparri but TF19(2CA, 1CL, 2DD)SC was escorting the Amphib TF there and did just fine. I wonder what setting Fionn had those PT TFs on for routing? I've seen several AARs where PT TFs just ran away, so my WAG is that he had them set on Direct Routing with the Threat Tolerance @ Absolute.

Anyway - those were some fun action scenes to watch.

I swept Clarke and Singapore hard this turn but Fionn has pulled back. I must be putting some serious hurt in his air ops. [:)]

What else to say... TFs are headed to the bases along Northern Borneo. Subs are almost all in place for the picket line along the Marshall and Glibert Isles. I've got PAs flying Naval Search plus every third sub has a wee little search plane.

I'm moving my mini-sub sows back to get more. I'm gunna try San Diego - rofl. I'd told Fionn in an earlier e-mail that I rated sinking the Boise as one of my top 5 things to do - just under sacking San Diego. If a min-sub can hit anything there it would be too cool. [8D]

Troops are being sent to the PI & Malaya. I'm gunna try to get into Palembang but it takes soooooo long to get troops to ships and get the right number of ships for port size, and then find enough escorts 'cause I'm deathly afraid of all of those damned subs I didn't sink in Manila. This is really Carl's fault. He had me so tied up with his sub operations the last time we played that I was almost in fits. I think he was laughing at me the whole time... <grin>.

And operations in China seem to be taking their own sweet time. PArt of that is trying to insure garrison levels and still try to start funneling CEA troops along the lower part of China. LCU from Manchukuo are starting the strategic movement phase so we'll see how long it takes to get that prong of the attack on place and moving in.

I sent Fionn the turn about 30 minutes B4 I started updating the AAR so with any luck I might see a turn in my box 2morrow morn.

I have float planes that are in Japan and stuck to reserve commands - I can't reassign them. Andthe pilots have pretty good stats. I see no point in having float planes stuck in Japan and am planning to disband them so the pilots go back into the pool. If I do this they go into the general pool - right? The pilots and planes go back in my pools - yes?

Is there any logical reason to keep air units that are stuck in Japan? Am I missing something?

Notes on 12-11-41

Borneo
Troops have landed @ Miri and now have it in hand. I plan to get supplies and engineers in to build up a field. Oil and refinery production is (150)x149.

Boise & Houston
Fionn brought the Boise out with the DDs Scout, Thracian, & Thanet to San Fernando. As you might recall, reports had one of my Kates putting a torpedo in her flank on the 9th.
My DDs Sazanami and Ushio tangled with the Boise TF in a nighttime encounter. I got off pretty lite with a single hit to the Sazanami and a pair of shell hits to the Ushio. The Boise took 3 shells as well as the Thracian while the Thanet took 1 and the Scout got off free.

@ Laoag A second TF with the CA Houston and 4 DDs went up against my CL Natori and 6 DDs. They looked at each other, fired at each other for a while, and missed each other...

Night Bombing
I hit Singapore, Manila, & Alor Star with Nite-Raids with my LBs. I didn't get a lot of action from my LB. Maybe they need to adjust for a period after being on Day missions since Dec 7? I'm gunna futz around with the night attacks for a while and see what happens.

Sub Observations
I'm still getting creditable attacks on Fionn's subs in shallow waters.

Under new ownership
Miri
Laoag
Itbayat Isle

IMHO, a good Allied player keeps in mind enemy rear areas which can be raided due to lack of defences. Most Japanese players would consoder the Home Islands/Kuriles/Sakhalin Island to be safe from any Allied raids in 1942. That is an attitude which can set the scene for a significant Japanese defeat.

A couple of Allied AARS which cover this ground are (a) jrcar's (and my comments therein) and (b) canoerebel. Accordingly, against an opponent of Nemo's strategic skill, you should always keep a strategic reserve which can cover a surprise attack. For that you need to have eyes back on the Home Islands.

I'm almost ready to start my game. I have plans to land a few of those Shipping Engineer LCUs here. They have Naval Support to assist with loading those TKs quicker and engineers to fully expand the port. Also, JNAF 24 which starts at Nagasaki is going there. It is one of two BF that have Naval Support (60).

Well I'm not planning to disband my recon planes - just most of the float planes <grin>.

In truth tho - it looks like patch 3 takes that opportunity away from me. I dunno - we'll see. I told Fionn of my intent and was waiting to give him a chance to cry foul b4 implementing the disband processes.

1EyedJacks,

It is early days and it will be a few more weeks before I can fully immerse myself in the logistics, but I think a few early comments for you to consider would be appropriate.

(A) Current Japanese Objectives

Based on your posted comments and actions taken to date, I list what I think your initial objectives appear to be. I would suggest that your opponent will probably come to similar conclusions.

(A1) Top priority is the capture of the Dutch East Indies.

(A2) A major Japanese push, using Kwantung Army units, in China will develop. In keeping with (A1) above and probably simultaneously with it, this push will focus on the north Chinese oil facilities.

(A3) Due to (A1) above, you are concentrating on quickly conquering both Malaya and Luzon in order to release follow up forces for (A1) above.

(A4) You are not overly interested in (a) capturing Pacific Atolls (with their limited garrison capabilities) or (b) an early move on Hawaii/Aleutians/Alaska - hence why no real attention paid to US Navy in and around Pearl Harbor.

These are all reasonable objectives provided you carry them out both efficiently and effectively within the first three months. What is much more critical is what will be your second stage objectives. For that you need to both plan now for the necessary logistics and to try to strategically surprise your opponent.

(B) Second Stage Japanese Objectives

I list below possible post March 1942 Japanese thrusts and adduce a few preliminary thoughts.

(B1) Invasion of India.

Even at this early stage, I rather suspect that once the SRA is cleaned up, you intend to strike at India. In support of this proposition I present (a) the KB was not exposed to losses over Pearl Harbor, (b) you have not committed to a land campaign in Burma and going directly to India will allow you to bypass and cut off the Allied garrison in Burma, (c) you view this game as a test run for porting Nemo's Empires Ablaze over to AE, and in that mod, Nemo was always extremely keen to conquer all of India ASAP, (d) without being bolstered by the Burmese garrison, Indian defences are quite fragile for the first six months.

I am yet to be convinced that in AE (unlike Empires Ablaze) an early conquest of India is your best post March 1942 strategy. My reasons are:
(i) Nemo will be fully aware of the strategic success he has previously achieved and will be half expecting his opponents to copy his past actions
(ii) unlike in Empires Ablaze, the shortage of indigenous Indian fuel, makes the capture of Indian Heavy Industry far less attractive in AE
(iii) the need to meet AE garrison requirements results in the Indian schwerpunkt becoming progressively weaker as you advance
(iv) to achieve any real worthwhile results from invading India, you have to capture northern India and thereby trigger the significant Indian reinforcements
(v) unlike China, the Japanese army will meet substantial Allied artillery in India - unless you have the resources and tactics to neutralise this threat, you will be bled dry in India

(B2) Invasion of Australia

There are four major ingress points into Australia (a) south west Western Australia (Perth/Albany), (b) Northern Territory (Darwin/Wyndham), (c) Gulf of Carpentaria (Normanton) and (d) Coral Sea (Townsville/Carins/Horn Island). Each of these approaches to landing in Australia has its pros and cons which I will not discuss at this point. However I will make a few preliminary points as to why a post March 1942 invasion of Australia is a better strategy than invading India.

(i) although VPs will not be a relevant consideration for you and Nemo (unlike most other PBEM games which are ultimately determined by VPs) city air attacks by the Japanese in Australia is a significant operational consideration and one that may catch Nemo by strategic surprise,
(ii) there are no Allied on map aircraft factories in India but there are four such factories in south eastern Australia. One of the Allies' biggest achilles heels in AE is the limited aircraft production. By getting within range of bombing the Australian aircraft factories you will not only seriously reduce aircraft production, but also create shortages in terms of refilling air units and constantly draining local supplies used for repairing the factories
(iii) unlike India, invading Australia can create a very large buffer zone to protect your vital SRA raw materials
(iv) with bases on the Australian south coast you will effectively split the Allies in two.

There are of course other post March 1942 possible objectives but any meaningful discussion of them is dependent on the success of your initial offensives.
