4 IJA Divs is MORE than enough to take out Singapore

His subs are getting annoying thats another big ship sunk may need to suspend west coast operations until the RN arrives

Those two RCN Corvettes I lost are badly needed now

I will try an attack at Moulmien tomorrow so lets see how my raw Indian and Burmese troopers do against the Japanese

Victory at Moulmien !!!

Post by Andy Mac »

Today forces of General Huttons Burma Corps drove superior Japanese forces out of Moulmien causing major losses on the enemy - this is the first time that Japanese forces have been defeated in this war and is viewed as a good sigh by the high command.

I am doing a little bit of evac by PBY at present from Singapore it will fall in a few days anyway so saving what I can

My estimate was 16th so here is hoping we can hold on until then

RE: Victory at Moulmien !!!

Post by Andy Mac »

OK I have ended the early threat against Burma PZB will now regroup and come back with overwhelming force - or he will bypass and isolate...

PZB will bring a lot of force to Burma I had 900 AV with another 250 in reserve he will bring 2,000 I cannot stand against that now its time to do a vanishing act and dig in at Mandalay.

1st to evac will be 17th Indian Div which has 1 Bde already at Imphal the other two will now move to join it.

The Chinese 5th Army will dig in at Mandalay.

1st Burma Div will hold at Mandalay and the Indpt Indian Bdes will head for Akyab.

The Burma rifles will mask my front to give the appearance of defensive depth with 3 x AA Regt that I have brought in to support them and attrit his air force..

He has 2,000 AV at PI lets say he can find another 2,000 for Burma and say 2,000 to take the rest of the DEI SRA and South Pacific.

Allowing 2,000 AV for Burma given the experience levels of my troops will be a walkover so time to start prepping Mandalay

Andy

Thats a lot of airpower that PZB has I need to think how I can give the appearance of still being in Burma without actually being in Burma

When I look at that airpower I doubt anything I can do is hold in range I need time for my pilots to gain experience

RE: Victory at Moulmien !!!

Post by Andy Mac »

Burma Corps has basically got 9 Bdes of decent infantry plus the BFF Bde and various Burma Rifles Bns

Plus the Chinese 5th Corps in support which is basically a weak Division.

My intent is to pull this force back as surrepticiciously as I can try and make him concentrate before he hits Burma.

The three Indpt Bdes will ultimately head towards the Akyab front
17th Indian Div will head to Imphal (one Bde Gp already there)
1st Burma Div will act as rearguard and pull back in the general direction of Imphal
5th Chinese Army will pull back in parallel with 1st Burma Div eventually heading for Ledo.

Smaller forces will support the Burma Div in its pull back trying to keep up the deception plan as long as possible.

To this end the AVG will fight it out over rangoon performing hit and run operations into Rangoon.

IRL when BURCORPS ended up in Assam it was a wreck - I want it fighting fit and ready for action after this plan is further along and I have a better idea as to what I got out of Singapore I will re formulate plans for defending India.

Ultimately I may sacrifice some smaller units to rebuild one of the Malaya Divs or to provide depth in my replacement pools.

PZB is not messing about I anticipate a nasty shock attack tomorrow.

But hey we are +1 day over my estimate so far and every day that passes a couple more companies of infantry are pulled out of Singapore

3,000 AV hurts though - I am definitly playing the shell game in Burma having seen that.

My decision to dump burma is not driven by the land I think if it was just about LCU's I would have a 50:50 chance of significant delay in Burma (if he didnt bypass) but with total air superiority I could not stand and thats the problem - I need to delay to let my AF get stronger and build the mutually supporting AF's I will need

Anyway lets see what happens next.

Attacks on PM have begun I am holding the two USAAF Bomb Groups (excl 1 Sqns) and the 4 Pursuit Sqns at Townsville for now

I have committed one P40 and A-24 Sqn to defend PM more will follow but I will rotate them.

Nasty little fight over PM where I lost a lot of warhawks.

How do you combat high level sweeps whats the answer ?

there is only one answer: you can´t combat high level sweeps of Zeroes, you will always be on the losing end. The only fighter early on being equal to the Zero at very high altitude is the Hurricane in both versions that are available from January on. But that´s just from looking at the stats. High alt sweeps of Zeroes is the way to go for the Japanese and you have no chance at all against them. Even if you would keep your fighters below the incoming Zeroes to work in your "good" altitude band you would then get bounced which is even worse. The result is already pretty clear to me, AE will create mostly very high altitude aircombat. So the aircombat will become European like and not Pacific like IMO. At least that´s my experience so far.

Don’t quote me on this, but I thought low altitude planes had a chance of not being seen by higher altitude sweeps? If not then I’ve been operating under a false assumption. Wouldn’t be the first time.

But if so, set you planes to the low side of their best altitude band once in a while. Not always but every week or two, then you might just get a nice ambush on an incoming raid if you’re not seen by the sweep.

Another way to play it is to concede the airspace and hope there is enough of an airfield left when the invasion comes so you can rebase in bombers and fighters to go after his ships.

With enough engineers you could keep the airstrip functional and simply allow the AAA units to contest the airspace overhead. Leave your airforce at Townsville and jump across at the critical moment.

I have a cunning plan !!!

3rd pursuit Sqn has surrendered all of its rookie pilots to the reserve and I have brought over the cream of the AVG pilots - as the AVG is going to be in a semi sacrifical role over rangoon to keep up my deception plan no need to waste the remaining elite pilots.....

So 3rd Pursuit Sqn which is equipped with P38E's will be the best in the business and will act as top cover fro PM when ready....

I am also going to re equip one of the Buffalo Sqns in the area with Hurricanes.....

Singapore fwell today not good 50,000 men marched intot he bag.

I got a fair number out but until they are back in India or Australia I am not countiong my chickens

My surprise failed to come off trying again nerhaps like an idiot - tomorrow

We will see what happens

RE: Victory at Moulmien !!!

Post by Andy Mac »

OK lets talk about Burma

In Burma I have basically got 4 Divisional equivalents of CW troops but very very very short of Divisional or Corps support assets.

At present I have

17th Indian Div this division is severely understregth in the all important support assets its artillery consists of a single field regt equipped with WW1vintage 18 pounders, its low on Bren and Vickers section that have so much of the firepower of an allied force but its experience level is not that bad largely because of the Gurkha Bde - as a division it never gains the additional artillery that other Divisions can get until it gets a TOE upgrade and its first TOE upgrade is actually a real lightener when it goes to all animal transport in June losing most of its mech. If not exposed and given tasks within its cvapability its a good Division that when recombined can do a job for you. By late Feb the deficiencies in its squad level firepower can be made good and its squads upgraded to Indian 42 Squads this is an important device level upgrade and should be prioritised.

1st Burma Div this division is seriously weak - on paper it has a lot of Burmese squads but they are seriously poor - its experience level is low bolstered only by its British and Indian Bns - it has the potential for a field regt of 24 x 25 punders but no medium guns and starts with a single regt of mountain guns that lack firepower. When the Indian Squads upgrade it has a decent spine but its not trained enough for counter attack duties and is very vulnerable from the air with few organic AA gun s and almost no engineers to dig in with - in summary not good.

Now it says a lot that these are my two prime defensive formations in Burma.

I have 2 other forces in this game

the 1st is a composite force of about 16 Bns consisting of 6 Indpt Burma Rifles Bns, 6 Burma Fronbtier Force Bns (BFF Bde) and 4 Burma Aux Force Bns - these units are only good for rear area security and fulfilling garriosn requirements - they are poor low morale, low experience with no heavy equipment - hot knife through butter - if faced by a real Japanese attack they are likely to surrender (ie disperse) rather than retreat - they must not be relied upon they are to weak.

The last force is what I call 'Ballentine Force' consists of 44th 45th and 46th Indian Bdes (IMPORTANT - these are not Bde Groups they are Bdes - e.g. 3 Bns added together with no Divinal level assets - e.g. equivalent to US Regiments not RCT's) - this force may look strong but its lack of Arty/AA or any divional assets make it weak - it does not have the strength of a full Division do not be decieved by the AV which is almost identical to Bde Groups of of Div its weak and those Bdes are basically newly formed so they are crap. (the Bdes get converted to Bde Groups in 43 where they become much more usefull)

Lastly im my case I have committed the 5th Chinese Army which has a total of 6 Divisions but of those 6 Divisions one is completely useless and the others need rest and training and even at full strength lack heavy equipment.

At Corps level I have 6th HAA Regt with 18 3.7" AA Guns, 35th LAA Regt with 36 x 40mm Bofors and the Burma Aux AA Bn with about 12 AA guns add to that the Glosters Bn at about 50% strength and thats it.

I have no armour becuase I chose not to send 7th Armoured Bde, I have no supporting Arty and very little engineering support to aid digging in - some of my base forces will get stronger with time but really only one is capable of decent operations the RN one at Rangoon

So a force with minimal Arty, minimal ability to entrench, little protection from the air and no counterattack force.

But apart from that everythinbg is ok.

My main concerns - lack of organic air cover low numbers of AA guns, few aircraft and almost no arty

Now if I was willing to make a stand what could I send to help

18th British Div - a powerfull if Arty light force (the rest of its arty arrives in convoys) its a powerfull full strength Division if fighting on its own terms can do a real number on a Japanese Div but its pretty green at the start so it could use some training. On the other hand it has plenty of engineers a good number of support squads (Bren/Vickers) and by Jan it can have about half of its medium arty and all of its heavy plus it has organic AA and AT guns that make it powerfull.

7th Armoured Bde - a powerfull armoured speahead -experienced well trained with attached infantry and RHA support and over 80 Stuart Tanks

A single Australian MG Bn is in theatre at present

1 Indpt A/T 1 Indpt Mountain and 1 Indpt Medium Arty Regt is available in India

In terms of ready forces if I was willing to strip India thats all I could send.

I f I was willing to strip Ceylon as well maybe a couple more AA Regts could be sent

Honestly andy what are you looking to acomplish in burma? If its only a delaying action to tie up some AV while India builds up why commit any extra forces? If your looking to hold burma your going to have to strip some indian units and even then you will be in the fight of your life. Also if your going to try to hold it i would hope you already convoyed in 100k worth of supplies. Honestly a long term defense of Burma becomes a logistics nightmare case you would have to fly in all of your supplies. All those supplies being flown into burma arent being flown into China. IMO its not worth it. My $ .02

Getting supply into Burma is easy, in our game against Nik and Joe we have about 70,000. Ship it into Rangoon early, and you can get more through the mountains, no need to fly in.

It is worth concentrating and trying to hold Myitkyina. That gives you a path in future. But you need guns, and AA and engineers :)

Otherwise it really isn't worth it except to slow them down and cause delay.

Holding Akyab is also a good thing to do... having those and building the airfields effectively stops the Japanese.

Cheers
