Reserve Units - do they 'work' on their jobs?

Post by jackyo123 »

i want to reduce the number of ahistorical casulaties among my base worker units - so i place them in RESERVE status.

However - does this prevent them from 'working' i.e - performing their engineering, base construction, and aircraft servicing/support functions?

I believe Engineers have to be in Combat mode in order to build ports/airfields/fortifications

Engineers need to be in combat mode to do their job.

You should not need to put them into reserve mode if you have regular combat units at the base.  In land combat, HQs and non-combat engineer units are automatically put in semi-reserve when attacked.  If there are few combat units, they will take heavy casualties, but if there are enough infantry, armor, and combat engineers to screen them, casualties among these units should be light.

This isn't my experience. In Sian I'm enduring a huge siege at the moment, thousands of AV of Chinese troops, and one baseforce. I noticed my aviation support was dropping - and the reason was that artillery bombardments were trashing my base force. I put it in reserve, problem solved, it started to creep back up again. Aircraft appear to be serviced just fine despite the unit being in reserve - it's the only baseforce there so I assume that the planes being fixed is proof of it doing its job while in reserve.

I noticed the same thing for AA guns in Burma, an AA unit set to combat mode was completely wrecked after a week of shelling. But AA guns set to reserve do appear to still fire at aircraft, though with AA guns it's obviously quite hard to tell. Seemed like a decent curtain of fire to me though, so I assume the AA units were contributing.

Granted this was before artillery was toned down which made it obvious when you had a gutted support unit, but I assume it is still thus. Also I'm not sure about whether they contribute to base building if in reserve.

IIRC the reserve status does only affect the behaviour of the unit in land combat, everything else works as in combat mode.

But I also noticed that even in rest/training mode the support units (e.g. AV support) continue to work. Not sure if this is intentional.
