Whats your worsed nightmare.

Post by Chris21wen »

I've just read the thread on favourite cheap unit, but what don't you like running in too?

I've got a few:
The German 88 for obvious reasons.
Those dam quad AA guns (where they really that effective against infantry and light armer).
Anything with big bombs (and a bad aim). I've had infantry unit three hexes away and lost half.

I hate using the 88 in defense (unless its in a forification), not because it's no good, but because as soon as the AI spots its, half the worls explodes on top of it. Anybody else noticed how the AI picks on them.

PS
Ever tried using the German fortification with the 88 in them in attack? Stick them in the front line with a good view and the enemy can usually kiss good by to his front line armor, and hence the scenario.

Mass attack of T-34/85s and ISU-xxx's is quite bad, simply because of the overwhelming amount of tanks. However, it forces into more flexible defence and is great for skills... :D
Also Sturmoviks get my special big hug.

And finally - darn B-17's. (But I haven't saw them in my 7.1 sessions. Yess.

It depends on how you use them and deploy them.

Ask Kerg - How I used 88's in a defense during ur last PBEM game :D :D

I only had two 88's and they lasted through a massive attack by Kerg's Russian Forces till games end on turn 27. I was outnumbered and out gunned atleast by 8 to 1. I say this after counting Kerg's wrecked armor and I won the game ;)

Tips on using 88's:

Never set these up on the front lines. Deploy them well behind your front line in an over watch position and set the Gun's ranges so they will not reveal their location too soon.

Deploy them behind a hill mass, when possible-about 18 to 25 hexes behind hill mass, with Infantry located on reverse slope of that Hill used as a MLR. This will stop enemy infantry and pin these and also stop enemy armor long enough so armor can be fired on by the 88's.

Deploy 88's behind things like Buildings, Trees, that block LOS - frontally so that a Armor Vehicle exposes its flank to your gun at ranges from 18 to 28 hexes. The further away the 88 is from a target - the harder it is to be spotted and thus can pump a few rounds into a target(s).

Always purchase a heavy transport unit to move 88's. Never keep the 88's in one place too long. Set up defense so as to draw enemy fire so you can move 88's to a new location. It takes a certain amount of time to drop artillery so time you moves accordingly. All this takes skill as you must design your defense around the 88's method of use as described

Right Kerg ??? Heee heee haaa Haaa :D

Japanese SS Engineer flame tanks.

Iosef Stalin tanks

Otherwise, it's pretty much depending on what unit you have available when you spot the adversary. If I have a Tiger spotting an OT-34 from 10 hexes away I'm not worried, but running into one of those things in e.g. forests is not a pretty sight. :p

Another thing to do when placing 88's (or any AT gun)is to locate them in a building or rough hex to give them better resistance to enemy fire. Buildings are better, but they also give your opponent (human) a pretty good idea where it is.

I also like to pair them up with a MMG/HMG.

Rockets, they really hurt you. Also, smoke is not nice when it's used against you :)

I've once had a PBEM ... I was Soviet assault vs Axis Defend (1944). I've discovered an 88's position in the first turns ... I've pounded it with big guns (152mm and BM-13), then with mortars (82mm) and occasionally hit him with my tanks ... It took me 12 turns to destroy it, but I had to assault his position with infantry to beat him up.

Later when the game ended and we exchanged savegames, I discovered that my artillery barrages did nothing to the gun (apart some suppression)... and the only damage i dealt to him was with infantry!

Here is the pic (just notice how the hill is shattered up :D ).

There is also an AAR of the game ... but only italian language for it :(

I agree with JediMessiah about the 17lbrs scary guns.
